Candi Sewu is an 8th century Buddhist temple located 800 meters north of Prambanan in Central Java, Indonesia. Candi Sewu is the second largest Buddhist temple complex in Indonesia, while Borobudur is the largest one. Candi Sewu is being dated to CA 782 – 792 AD and so it predates the nearby “Loro Jonggrang” temple at Prambanan, Although the complex consists of 249 temples, this Javanese name translates to 'a thousand temples,' which originated from popular local folklore (The Legend of Loro Jonggrang).
Candi Sewu has been heavily ruined by an earthquake, and after the reconstruction the Kala’s Face in the restored main hall is lacking its upper part. The condition of the side halls identical.
