...explained her curiosity as to what makes the people want to live even though life is often a curse. In the end of the chapter she advises Cunegonde and Candide to ask each of the passengers on the ship to tell their story, every single one of them has been through misery and pain but still alive. “Therefore take my advice: divert yourself, and prevail upon each passenger to tell his story.” 4. In these two chapters, Candide is holding on to the love he has for Cunegund. This is what is helping him have hope throughout the journey, maintain a positive attitude. “Candide, however, had one advantage over Martin: he lived in the pleasing hopes of seeing Miss Cunegund once more.” As martin continues with his negativity about the world and God, Candid still believes there is some good in this world and there is hope. The negativity Martin has for the world and God is quite understandable for as the chapter explains his situation as man who has nothing left “Whereas the poor philosopher had nothing to hope for. Between the two, it is evident how the hope of something keeps one pushing forward through misery compare to one who has nothing. 6. The two People Candide needs to rescue who he thought were dead is Baron and Pangloss. After Candide stabbed him and his wound...

...and is often regarded as a very important tool for preaching the word of God. When the people in the story refer to him as antichrist, it clashes with the image of the Pope. According to scripture, the antichrist is a figure who’s purpose is to bring down God, not to praise him. Double entendre in Candid. Before going into my paper, I’ll make a note that in locating the passages that satisfy the requirements and answering some of the questions, I will try my best to make the language...acceptable. However, I will at times have to use less civilized speech in order to get my point across. Page 1 “...there was a man whom nature had endowed with the gentlest of characters.” Just by reading the first part of this sentence, when one stumbles across the “nature had endowed,” phrase, one begins to think of the penis. In today’s lexicon, well endowed usually means that a male is “packing it” down south. Voltaire further continues the passage by adding “the gentlest of characters” to dissuade the reader from focusing on something other than Candide’s personality, but we really know what he means. With Voltaire using this to describe Candide, we might be able to assume that Candid is well above average when it comes to certain body parts. Page 2 “Legs were visibly instituted to be breeched, and we have breeches.” This phrase has obvious connotations to intercourse. When Doctor Pangloss is giving Candide a brief lecture about the merits of life, we find this little gem of...

...The Annoyance/Dangers of the Paparazzi Would you like if people were constantly bombarding you with cameras? Lets say you’re enjoying a nice meal with your family and then suddenly a group of “photographers” come up and just start snapping an endless amount of photos and there’s nothing you can do about it. The so-called “photographers” that I’m talking about are called the paparazzi. The paparazzi first started with a man named Ron Galella, nicknamed America’s first paparazzo. Galella’s first target was actor Marlon Brando; he began harassing Brando one day telling him to take of his glasses for a photo. Brando wasn’t playing his games, not only did he refuse, but he also punched Galella, knocking out five teeth. (Talese 97) Yes, what Marlon Brando did was a little excessive, but in his defense you shouldn’t bombard people with your camera, giving them orders and whatnot, it’s called common courtesy. The paparazzi have gotten way out of control over the years, yes, they have a job, but there should be limits. Of course, the paparazzi see it differently. They have little concern for celebrity’s privacy. The way they see it, is they have a job to do and money to earn. They believe celebrities like being photographed, but they pretend they don’t. They also believe they’re making celebrities more famous, therefore successful. (94) I’m almost positive celebrities do not enjoy getting their pictures taken, as for saying they pretend, well that’s just right stupid. For example...

...education and writer, Jack Schneider, in his article “Making it easier to fire teachers won’t get you better ones”, demonstrates how assumptions that job security can help educators improve is illogical. Schneider’s purpose is to inform/assemble school systems to help teachers find guidance for improvement. He adopts a supportive/candid tone in order for school administrators, districts, and readers to realize that teachers do care for professional growth, but lack their support to reach their full teaching capacity. Throughout the first section of Schneider’s passage, he addresses the Vergara case to distinguish how their logic is far from reality. Schneider creates a pedantic diction to capture the attention of schools and districts, to emphasize that his claims are correct. “Research does indicate that, though teachers tend to improve by leaps and bounds in their first few years on the job, they...

...The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the noblest, greatest, and most adventuresome novel in the world. Mark Twain definitely has a style of his own that depicts a realism in the novel about the society back in antebellum America. Mark Twain definitely characterizes the protagonist, the intelligent and sympathetic Huckleberry Finn, by the direct candid manner of writing as though through the actual voice of Huck. Every word, thought, and speech by Huck is so precise it reflects even the racism and black stereotypes typical of the era. And this has lead to many conflicting battles by various readers since the first print of the novel, though inspiring some. Says John H. Wallace, outraged by Twain’s constant use of the degrading and white supremacist word ‘nigger’, "[The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is] the most grotesque example of racist trash ever written" (Mark Twain Journal by Thadious Davis, Fall 1984 and Spring 1985). Yet, again to counter that is a quote by the great American writer Ernest Hemingway, "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn…it’s the best book we’ve had…There has been nothing as good since" (The Green Hills of Africa [Scribner’s. 1953] 22). The controversy behind the novel has been and will always remain the crux of any readers is still truly racism. Twain surely does use the word ‘nigger’ often, both as a referral to the slave Jim and any African-American that Huck comes across and as the epitome of insult...

Zenti effectively explains his internal conflict with his weight through implementing often-blunt and uncomfortable anecdotes, as well as relevant audio interjections; and for that reason is most definitely worth listening to. The listener is quickly made aware of Zenti’s unusually candid and comical narrating style through his podcast introduction, which is an audio clip of him attempting to explain the podcast title. Zenti provides narration over the audio clip explaining his frustrations with speaking English. Much like the introduction the rest of...

...only look back in time over the past 40 years to observe that very little has changed in regards to wedding albums, wall frames and even most poses. The new photographer, by communicating effectively with the modern consumer, has encouraged serious questioning of traditional values maintained by studios locked into the past. Most young consumers, whether high school seniors or brides, want change: they want the benefits of modern, digital technology. Success in the future will depend on how well photographers address elements of change in consumer wants, needs and desires in their market place. Many will argue that a portrait or a candid is still a portrait or candid, being relatively unchanged by time. But the new techie photographer will argue that by merging software technology with digital photography, the definition of what a portrait or candid can be has changed. As an analogy, the horse and carriage evolved into a simple 'horseless' carriage before evolving into an enclosed chassis on wheels. And, the automobile is still evolving. Will digital photography evolve in a similar manner as new technologies emerge? And, to the detriment of the professional, will technology continue to reduce professional photography to a consumer 'do-it-yourself-project?' The amateur sees photographic technology in a simplified manner: "I have a 12 mega pixel camera and so do most of the pros, I can make ink prints like some of the pros do and I have Photoshop like the pros do, so why do I need...

In this passage Nancy Mairs, a dear woman who has multiple sclerosis openly identifies herself as a “ cripple”, instead of handicapped or disabled. Mairs presents herself in a specific way to show why she made that word choice of “ cripple” to name herself. Upon doing that Mairs uses rhetorical features such as tone, word choice, and rhetorical structure to further her reason. In this passage, Mairs presents herself at the outset having a candid and elegy tone. The first sentence states: “ I am cripple; and that right there without no further details shows the candidness of this passage. As she brings out that “ Cripple...

...Health Care Communication Communication is a vital component to society’s existence, without effective communication simple task would remain incomplete. Occupational communication is specific to the type of job performed; some require more attentions to detail and greater understanding, like health care. Basic communication requires specific elements, which differ from the rules of health care communication. Health care providers have an added responsibility of communicating effectively with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds while adhering to the rules and regulations of health care communication as well as creating an environment that fosters open, candid communication. Effective communication means conveying clear, accurate, and understandable information to a receiver. Moreover, to accomplish effective communication individuals must incorporate the following basic elements, which are the sender who initiates communication, the message is the idea, thought, feeling, or opinion communicated, the channel is the medium through which the message travels, feedback is the receiver’s response to the message, and the receiver obtains the transmitted message. Therefore, an accurate definition of communication is a shared understanding of information transmitted between sender and receiver (Cheesebro, O'Conner, & Rios, 2010, "Chapter 1, Communication Defined"). Health care communication is much more in-depth, it requires additional elements than in basic communication...

...How to Die in Oregon Portland, USA, 107 Min., 3/13/12 9PM (Watched online) How to Die in Oregon is an emotionally charged, and intimate exploration of the controversial “Death with Dignity” Law passed in the state of Oregon in 1994. How to Die in Oregon received the Grand Jury Prize in the U. S. Documentary Competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, along with other countless accolades, and is currently available as an HBO Original Film. In his film, filmmaker Peter Richardson, employs the observational mode of documentary to witness how patients families and friends grapple with the legal option of physician assisted suicide. In exploring the complexities surrounding this topic, Richardson interviews doctors on both sides of the issue, as well as activists, patients' families, and opinionated talking heads. The end result of Richardson’s effort is a poignant, powerful and emotionally troubling look at people intimately grappling with the decision to die. It acutely forces audience members to look death in the face along with the patients profiled, as well as ask themselves the same questions of why, and how to die. 1) In his own statement, Richardson claims How to Die in Oregon is the result of his, “desire to explore the profound questions the law asks of those who might use it, and in that exploration find a way to talk about the larger subject of death and dying today.” Richardson’s goal of investigating the subject of death is made clear with his use of observational...
