Cannibalism In The Cars

Comedy transports people to an alternative reality, in which humor is the narcotic that alleviates worldly concerns, such as an unfulfilling government. In America, there is a growing frustration with the stagnant government and its negligent politicians. Thus, in the short story “Cannibalism in the Cars”, Mark Twain propagates humor and discontent with American Congress through long-winded, descriptive incongruities, subtle but insightful irony, and unintentional, revealing self-thoughts. The short story began with the stranger sitting with Twain on the train ride westward. On the surface, the stranger seemed dull, but the tale depicted a more wicked individual. The monologue started with rambling about that fateful night was “…unobstructed …show more content…
With each pointless, long-winded detail, the audience believe more of the far-fetched tale because of the vivid imagery that was depicted. Thus, Twain engaged his audience by taking them to realities they did not expect to go; this intentional misdirection increased suspense so that when the unexpected is revealed, the audience is left dumbfounded. Their dumfoundedness at the anecdote absurdities resulted in realization of their own gullibility and humor is found through the anecdote’s incongruities and audience’s guilelessness. To prolong the gaiety of the audience, Twain subtly inserts irony in story. The educated stranger and his peers delightfully held “election by ballot” to determine “which [man] shall die to furnish food” for the assembly (Twain 2). However, the failure to reach a notion, prompted a “chairman… and proper officers” elected to the nomination chair, but a recess was motioned midway (Twain 2). Ironically the intelligent and highly civilized men would utilize their intellects to carry out the barbaric act of cannibalism. Plus, the parliamentary procedure and elections held resemble those of Congress, where progress can be

Comparing Faith And God In Cuaron's The Road

...The father thinks grisly thoughts: of foul beasts in the darkness, of his wife, of suicide. He sees his son as his defense from all this: “the word of God” (pg 5) and a “golden chalice, good to house a god”(pg 75). Ely sees the child as an “angel”(pg 158), recognizing that surviving children are, at the very least, a symbol of hope. In fact, without the golden son to keep him human, perhaps the father, too, would resort to cannibalism. Giving his son godly status is a way to keep his own beast in check, to send the creature with “alabaster bones”(pg 4) back to the recesses of his head. The “fire” the two carry keeps the beast at bay. Perhaps in the hungriest of times the father wonders why he never ate his fellow Man. He looks at his son, too young to defend himself if his father ever decided to to join a blood cult, and realizes that his son’s survival keeps him intact too. (If there isn’t something godly about that revelation, than I don’t know what...

The examples presented included the trolley car cases where, in one case, one, being the operator of a trolley with no brakes, must decide whether or not to change the course of the trolley car in order to only sacrifice one life or let the trolley car continue on its course and end five lives. In such a situation, one has to truly examine one’s outlook on life and the differences between right and wrong to come up with an answer. In this example, the idea of inevitability comes to mind. The Futility of Addiction - Short Story

...The Futility of Addiction By Ryan Doyle The sun was beckoning over the horizon as the two best friends walked along the shoulder of what appeared to be a never ending sea of concrete stretching into the distance. One of the men had thick grimy dreadlocks swaying over his face as he walked. His white singlet was stained yellow and was barely staying on his skeletal frame. The other man’s head was shaved and covered in sores and battle scars from his many altercations in recent years. Their eyes were bloodshot and beaming; it was the morning of the fourth day since they began their most recent journey of substance abuse. They were both completely consumed in their psychotic state of mind, seemingly unaware of their surroundings, where they were going, or what their purpose was. Aside from their edgy and irrational conversation there was an eerie silence on what is normally a bustling stretch of freeway. The dreadlocked man reached into his pocket and pulled out a small glass cylindrical pipe that was stained yellow from its countless abuse. As he put it to his mouth and sparked the lighter it gleamed in the sun immediately getting the attention of his comrade by which he had shared this experience with so many times before. As the shaved head man watched him put the flame to the glass it began to glow and his eyes lit up as if his life depended on inhaling that smoke and nothing else mattered, like it was his only reason for being. As the man brushed his soiled deadlocks...

...Most of these bear deaths were at the hands of humans: "[H]umans were involved in over 80 percent of grizzly bear deaths this year. 'Human-caused' killings include both grizzly bears struck by cars as well as bears removed by management for trespasses, property damage, public safety concerns and old age." Like other struggling wildlife, bears are forced to compete with livestock for limited space, and the bears will never win that competition: "Livestock grazing was the leading contributor to grizzly bear removals this year, with 14 bears killed after they were linked to sheep or cattle depredation." Because in this country, animals that we do NOT have to eat, drink (their secretions) and wear take priority over necessary keystone species...

...Extract Freeing Up Obesity By ROBERTO DE VOGLI (Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences, University of California, Davis) February 13, 2014 http://www.themarknews.com/2014/02/13/freeing-up-obesity/ The obesity epidemic is out of control. Since 1980, obesity rates have tripled in most countries, and there are now almost two billion overweight individuals in the world. Policy recipes to fix the problem abound. More education, fewer cars. More bicycles, less TV. The list goes on and on. So far, though, public-health interventions have failed spectacularly. But why? Although the rise of obesity is often described as an effect of specific individual and lifestyle choices, the problem is largely a byproduct of deeper political and economic changes in society. In a recent study published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, a group of researchers, led by myself, found that, when compared with more protected economies, countries adopting more aggressive deregulation policies experienced faster increases in body mass index and consumption of fast food and soft drinks. After taking into account alternative explanations and competing risk factors, we concluded unequivocally that the freer an economy is, the fatter its people are. How does an unregulated market relate to the rise of obesity? Through market concentration and the rise of food oligopolies that flood markets with cheap, unhealthy, ultra-processed products, in addition to fast food and soft drinks...

Jeffrey Dahmer

...Forensic Chemistry Jeffrey Dahmer: The Milwaukee Monster It was May 21st, 1960 when Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Lionel Dahmer and Joyce Flint. Dahmer was raised there as an only child. He was a child that was full of life, interested in everything you would assume your average boy to be interested in. He loved to wrestle with his father and help him around the house all the time. Outgoing and curious, Dahmer was everything any set of new parents could ask for and more. One thing interesting was his early fascination for animals. He loved to help his dad clear the animal bones from under the house where animals had died. As the bones were dropped in to a bucket, Dahmer was overwhelmed with joy at the sounds they made. As he grew older, the fascination of the sound of bones became a fascination with turning animals in to just bone - he began to kill them. In 1968, Dahmer’s family moved to Akron, Ohio to a small town call Bath in the Bath Township. That same year, he became a brother to David Dahmer. It seems as though from that point on things started going downhill for Dahmer. As he neared junior high, Dahmer became much more introverted. Although he was always the class clown throughout both junior high and high school, students still knew something seemed to be off with Jeffrey Dahmer. As Dahmer grew from the boy he was in to the teenager he was becoming, he was going through a hard time in his life. His parents marriage had been seriously...

Legalizing Domestic Violence

...Introduction Ever wonder why snakes migrate after laying eggs? The truth behind this is the alleged cannibalism that happens when snakes keep their young. In a greater sense, the mistreatment of family members, usually wives, in a domestic scene is the same as keeping a snake and eating it after a few days. It is selfish. It is blameworthy. It is immoral. What is this monstrous thing beheld as it is not to be? The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993) defines domestic violence as, “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation, whether occurring in public and private life (Mallorca-Bernabe 1-2).” In simpler terms, domestic violence refers to the abusive treatment one evokes another in the family context. Fifty years ago, domestic violence was not even recognized as a significant study or as a legal problem. It was not until the time when feminist activism developed concerning domestic violence that this issue surfaced publicly. From then on, domestic violence has been understood as abuse not confined to the criterion of being physical but as an act involving emotional abuse and sexual assault (Schneider 353-363). Physical violence, being the most evident of the three, involves acts that somewhat suffuse physical torment upon the victim. This encompasses slapping, hitting, kicking, burning...

...be used. The first inspection reported that it could not be used; however, a later inspection stated that after a few minor changes it would be useable. On May 4, 1940 Rudolf Hoss officially established it as a German concentration camp. Auschwitz was originally intended for Polish political prisoners and other Poles. In June of 1940, the first load of prisoners arrived. Included were 728 Poles and a handful of Jews. Soon, though, it became a melting pot of prisoners. Czechs, Soviets, Yugoslavs, Jews, and Gypsies; but only men were housed there. Not until 1942 did women arrive. In January of 1942 it was decided that Auschwitz would become the main Jewish extermination camp. Thereafter cattle cars brought in ship loads of Jews monthly. They were brought from all over in these filthy cars, going for days without food, water, or washing facilities. During the first few months of operation, Auschwitz simply housed the Jews because an effective method for mass extermination had not yet been found. They performed many experiments on the prisoners to find a gas that was cheap and quickly effective. Also, they had not yet begun cremating the bodies so they had prisoners dig huge trenches 15 feet wide, 15 ft. deep, and 150 yards long to bury them. These massive holes would be filled within days. However, during the summer, the bodies bloated and rotted and a disgusting purplish liquid began seeping up from these graves, smelling of bile and rotting flesh. Nearby fish farmers complained...
