Captain Molly's Role In The Revolutionary War

What would you do if you saw your husband collapse and get carried off the battlefield? Would you run over to him and make sure he´s okay or would you run to his cannon/gun and take over? That´s what Molly Ludwig Hayes did. She ran to to the cannon her husband was firing and took over. Her bravery showed that women need a chance to become independent like men. Molly was an inspirational figure for women in the 18th century, stirring others to follow in her footsteps in contributing to the war effort.
Molly followed a group led by Martha Washington, they took care of the sick and injured troops during the war, they also made food and washed clothes. When it was time for the soldiers to go back to the battlefield and fight, Molly carried pitchers …show more content…
Margaret Corbin is her real name. In Fort Washington her husband was killed, so she took over much like Molly did with her husband’s cannon. The other troops seen that Margaret had an excellent aim but so did the british. Soon the British made her their main target, they ended up doing what they wanted and injuring her badly, the injury caused her to stop firing the cannon. In the end the British won the war and Margaret was released as a wounded soldier. The impairment caused her to became disabled and unable to walk. She was the first women to receive a government pension as a wounded warrior but it was not the same amount as the men’s (Pavao). When Margaret returned home she was known throughout her community as Captain Molly. “Resolved, That Margaret Corbin, who was wounded and disabled in the attack on Fort Washington, whilst she heroically filled the post of her husband who was killed by her side serving a piece of artillery, do receive, during her natural life Or the continuance of the said disability, the one-half of the monthly pay drawn by a soldier in the service of these states; and that she now receive out of the public stores, one complete suit of cloaths, or the value thereof in money
