Brigadier Hughes was responsible for cleaning up the camp and restoring the health of the prisoners still alive. In his testimony reported by the Times of London he first witnessed dead bodies in the same living space as those still alive. He also testified that exactly 13,000 people had died in the last few months at Belsen. At the liberation, he told a reporter from Reuters news agency that “he saw evidence of cannibalism at the camp”. The Second British officer to testify was Captain Derek Sington. Captain Sington was one of the first British officers to arrive at Bergen-Belsen. The Times of London published the story on September 20, 1945 . He gave his testimony on October 10, 1945 . Dr. Klein was the oldest of all the prisoners. He talked about his role in selecting victims for the gas chambers. Any prisoner who was too sick or too ill was selected for the gas chambers. He also testified that he complained to Kramer about the conditions at Belsen. Dr. Klein also blamed Berlin claiming that they knew what was going on. Irma Grese finally began her testimony on October 16th. She spent three and a half hours in the witness box . She testified that the age of 20 she was in charge of 30,000 women at Auschwitz. Irma Grese was considered the worst of all the female S.S. guards and also considered a beauty by some people. She also claimed that conditions were good but there were too many prisoners. She also denied beating prisoners until they were unconsciousness. She also denied having a dog which would attack prisoners on occasion. The next day, Irma Grese testified a second time and spent six hours in the witness box . Women in the S.S. was very common. They were all between the ages of eighteen and twenty six . Irma Grese was twenty-two when she was arrested for her role in the concentration camps. The trial came to an end on November 16th . The court found 30 out of the 48 guilty of war crimes. The only two stories to ever appear on page 1 of the New York Times about the Belsen Trial were “Kramer and Irma Grese Will Die with 9 others for Reich Murders” and “Kramer and 10 others hanged for Belsen-Oswiecim Atrocities” .
