...I plopped into an itchy polyester chair, the aisle seat of the other three. Looking at my ticket my seat letter was C. Quickly I scooted over to the middle itchy polyester seat glancing my rump on a metal seatbelt buckle. While trying to discreetly rub the pain away I wondered why an airplane line would letter its seats A, B, D, C, E. My hypothesis: they enjoyed laughing at the unlucky person who got seat C and had to scoot from aisle to middle causing her to hit her derrière on the seat buckle. At least that conjecture fit these stewardesses. Catching one smirking at me I threw her a glare. It wasn’t my fault if the airline company didn’t know its alphabet. By now you may have noticed that I am not a frequent flyer and normally you’d be right. But, in the past five days I had flown five times. I was actually on a cultural tour with my ballet company of Beaufort and Gullah Island, South Carolina, and Houma, Louisiana. Ironically, this tour was about understanding others and learning about people before you judged them. For me, five plane rides plus security checks every 10 feet plus a sore butt equaled the end of my patience. Hearing laughter I sighed. Somehow my friends all managed to sit together, but two empty seats on either side of me were my only companions. As the flow of people boarding began to taper off, a supermodel-esque black lady with knock-off Gucci sunglasses looked from her ticket to my previous aisle seat, and, connecting the two, alighted on the diamond-checkered...

...1. As Doug Friesen, what would you do to address the seat problem? Where would you focus your attention and solution efforts? The root cause needs to be determined. The quality team needs to work on this or form a committee. These people should be from both KFS and TMM. Once the causes are found they need to figure out how to solve these issues the most cost effective way. The main issues that need to be addressed are: missing/broken/wrong parts, wrinkles on seats, various issues with the bolster, and head rest functionality. Seat installations from both rear positions have more defects than that of the front seat installations. These issues could also be caused by the new team members that began working in April. The defects also need to be noticed earlier in the process and when it is found there should be fewer movements of the car and seat. 3. Where, if at all, does the current routine for handling defective seats deviate from the principles of the Toyota Production System? It deviates from TMM’s guided principles. With the high level of defects it does not follow the JIT production, which also goes against TPS’s principles. It also deviates from the jidoka principle that seeks to build quality control in the production process and averting problems when they are detected. Not only being extremely prone to shutdowns they didn’t have people that were capable of solving the problems promptly. The organization cultivated two strong attitudes: stick to the facts, and...

...musculoskeletal disorder (MSD). The following are important considerations when attempting to maintain neutral body postures while working at the computer workstation: * Hands, wrists, and forearms are straight, in-line and roughly parallel to the floor. * Head is level, or bent slightly forward, forward facing, and balanced. Generally it is in-line with the torso. * Shoulders are relaxed and upper arms hang normally at the side of the body. * Elbows stay in close to the body and are bent between 90 and 120°. * Feet are fully supported by floor or footrest. * Back is fully supported with appropriate lumbar support when sitting vertical or leaning back slightly. * Thighs and hips are supported by a well-padded seat and generally parallel to the floor. * Knees are about the same height as the hips with the feet slightly forward. Regardless of how good your working posture is, working in the same posture or sitting still for prolonged periods is not healthy. You should change your working position frequently throughout the day in the following ways: * Make small adjustments to your chair or backrest. * Stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso. * Stand up and walk around for a few minutes periodically. These four reference postures are examples of body posture changes that all provide neutral positioning for the...

...Theories of “Healthy” Standing The “normal posture as recommended by Staffel and his 19th century contemporaries and has been promoted ever since by physicians, orthopedists, physical therapists, mothers, teachers, and military superior. Even today, that “upright” or “straight” standing posture with slight lordosis (forward bends) in the lumbar and cervical spines and a light kyphosis (backward bend) in the thoracic spine is stereotypically considered “good and proper” and is often called healthy, balanced, or neutral. Theories of “Healthy” Sitting Sitting Upright? Staffel recommended an erect posture of the trunk, neck and head, with normal slight lordoses in the lumbar and cervical areas and a light kyphosis in the thoracic spine, similar to the desired back posture when standing erect. The simple concept that sitting upright, with the thighs horizontal and the lowerlegs vertical, means “sitting healthily” endured for a surprisingly longtime. Maintaining Lumbar Lordosis When one sits down on a hard, flat, surfaces, without a backrest, the ischial tuberosities ( inferior protuberances of the pelvic bones) act as fulca around which the pelvic girdle rotates under the weight of the upper body. Since the bones of the pelvic girdle are linked by connective tissue to the thighs and lower trunk, rotation of the pelvis affects the posture of the lower spinal column, particularly the lumbar region. If the rotation of the pelvis is rearward, the normal lordosis of the...

...For Chivalry Most studies found that the number one fear for Americans is the fear of public speaking, followed by death. That means as of right now I am better off if were inside that casket than standing here delivering this eulogy to you. We are here to commemorate the dead of Chivalry. I still remember the first time I saw him, in a Disney cartoon where he fought through a dragon just to save a girl, that cartoon was the Sleeping Beauty. Since then I saw more of him, opening doors for people, giving up seats for people, volunteer to carrying things for people, pulls out chair for people, paying the bill in his first date, the second date, and reluctantly in the third date but he still pays the bill. He is basically courageous and courteous. We are all mournful by his death, except women who killed Chivalry. If he were still alive today, the world would be a better place. Women, elderly, and kids do not have to stand in public transport; Chivalry would give up his seat. Women would have free dinner; Chivalry would pay the bill. And there would not be any need for automatic doors; Chivalry would open it up for you. Chivalry however did not die in vain. He has set us an example throughout his life, a code of conduct, that we men should follow suit. And if we do, we might bring Chivalry back from the...

...Cody Halliday Jennifer Pecora Kettley English I 2015SU 9W0 & 9W1 06 June 2015 The Empty Seat psa is effective in getting its message across to not let someone commit suicide and to recognize the signs before it’s too late. The ad uses primarily the pathos and ethos appeals to reach its audience, with the majority of the logos appeal in the end. It uses several visual and audio tools to set a grim and drear tone through the ad and then uplift it towards the end. The ad effectively uses several things as tools to appeal and influence the emotions of its audience. Right from the start the ad is playing a slow song and it slowly zooms out to show an empty seat where a student is missing. This grabs the audience’s attention, then in the next scene the audience sees another classroom. In this classroom the students are painting and another empty seat is shown. This makes the audience feel now that something is wrong. More and more classrooms and school activities are shown with students missing. This repetition is being used to set the feeling into the audience that something is wrong, and in the scenes the other students are carrying on with their activities and classes as if nothing is wrong makes the scenes feel even more wrong. In the scene with the birthday cake and the candles, the dark room and the image of the once again empty chair almost everything is being used to touch the audience. The room being dark sets a grim tone. The birthday party itself is familiar...

...The most common causes of injuries in this age group are car crashes, bicycle crashes, and fires. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expands this list to include the following. 1.Motor vehicle (CDC 2012) 2.Suffocation (CDC 2012) 3.Drowning (CDC 2012) 4.Poisoning (CDC 2012) 5.Fire/Burns (CDC 2012) 6.Falls (CDC 2012) 7.Sports and recreation risks. (CDC 2012) Injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children in the United States (CDC). Injuries are not always preventable regardless of their nature. A common sense approach can lead to a reduction in injuries. Driving safely including the proper use of seatbelts or car seats, removal of plastic bags from young children, teaching swimming and supervision when in water, removal of house hold toxins, fire safety, and use of bicycle helmets are taught in school to kids (HHS). The CDC calls for efforts to reduce injuries by focusing on what term the 3 P’s; education, enforcement, and engineering. Education is used by the schools to teach children basic safety. New parents are often taught the proper way to use child restraint seats in the car. Locally, in my area the state police have no fault safety checks in which your car seat and the use of it can be examined for proper fit. These clinics are conducted in a big box retailer’s parking lot so that all a parent needs to do is drive up. If fault is found in the use of the car safety seat, education is given out rather than a citation. The second...
