Cleveland Clinic Case Study

...For the exclusive use of K. HORTON 9-607-143 REV: SEPTEMBER 26, 2007 FRANCES X. FREI AMY C. EDMONDSON CHRISTINE HARRIS-VAN KEUREN ELIOT SHERMAN Cleveland Clinic Dr. Delos “Toby” Cosgrove, cardiothoracic surgeon and president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, emerged from the operating room on a January afternoon in 1996 having just changed the way he, and subsequently the world, approached heart surgery. A trip to Stanford University Medical School had convinced him it was possible to operate on the valves of the heart through a three-inch incision instead of the nearly foot long incision that was standard practice before splitting the patient’s breastbone with a saw to reach the heart.1 After refining the technique in the lab, he had successfully performed the first such operation. Eight months later, Cosgrove performed two of these surgeries back-to-back, broadcasting his work live via satellite to 4,000 surgeons in 40 cities around the world. The Cleveland Clinic’s broadcasting capabilities facilitated this demonstration of the substantial benefits of his minimally invasive method of heart surgery, which reduced the risk of infection and involved less bleeding, pain, and trauma, significantly reduced the amount of time needed for recovery, and could be used in about three quarters of the heart valve surgeries performed in the United States.2 So compelling was this exhibition that within a year use of the technique had “exploded” throughout the medical community.3 Such...

Apollo Case

...For exclusive use IIM Kozhikode - EPGP Kozhikode Campus, 2015 Harvard Business School 9-396-027 Rev. February 29, 1996 Apollo Hospitals of India (A) Dr. Prathap Reddy's office was filled with flowers. The tags conveyed birthday greetings from employees of Apollo Hospitals Madras and former patients, including the vice president of India. Reddy greeted a steady parade of well-wishers and paused to chat warmly by telephone with a former janitor who had called from the United States. Throughout the day, employees greeted “the Chairman” with smiles, hugs, and gifts. Dr. Reddy had founded Apollo Hospitals Madras in 1983 as the first corporate hospital in India. It offered sophisticated treatment in a comprehensive range of medical specialties. Stateof-the-art medical technology, operated by skilled technicians, complemented superior doctors, many of whom had left lucrative jobs in Europe and North America to come to Apollo. Other entrepreneurs had followed Apollo into the market, building several dozen corporate hospitals to compete with Apollo and its government-run forerunners. Since Apollo’s founding, the quality of medical care in India had improved substantially for those who could pay. Despite competition, though, Apollo Hospitals Madras remained a leader in the provision of top-quality medical care and had made a profit for 10 straight years. Reddy had been joined at Apollo by his four daughters, who took prominent roles in the company. Having introduced...

Lean Hospitals

...LEAN HOSPITALS “Mark Graban’s book has documented what is now happening in hospitals all across America as we learn to apply the Toyota Production System methodology to healthcare. This book lays out the nuts and bolts of the lean methodology and also describes the more difficult challenges, which have to do with managing change. Graban’s book is full of wins—these are the same type of wins that are happening at ThedaCare every day. I wish I could have read this book six years ago, as it might have prevented some of the mistakes we made in our lean transformation journey.” — John S. Toussaint, MD, President/CEO ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value “Coupled with a foundation of alignment and accountability, the ideas in this book provide a powerful tool to help hospitals get closer to the goal we want – perfect care.” — Quint Studer, CEO, The Studer Group, author of Results that Last “Mark Graban is the consummate translator of the vernacular of the Toyota Production System into the everyday parlance of healthcare. With each concept and its application, the reader is challenged to consider what is truly possible in the delivery of healthcare if standardized systems borrowed from reliable industries were implemented. Graban provides those trade secrets in an understandable and transparent fashion.” — Richard P. Shannon, MD, Frank Wister Thomas Professor of Medicine, Chairman, Department of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine “There is an...
