Conduct a career interview with someone who is working in a field of interest to you. Ask that person about their journey. How did they get to where they are today? Was it all planned out or were there surprises along the way? Without identifying the person you interviewed, share the person's journey in this interview. You can ask them the questions below, along with questions that you create/brainstorm that will help you gather more information about career decisions this person has made. If you ask additional questions, please write out the question, along with the individual’s responses.
Your Name: __Samantha_______________________________________________________
1. How did you begin your career?
I first got my associate degree and became an RN. I could not get a job at the time so I continued school and received my BSN and began working at a hospital in Staten Island.
2. How does this career match your needs and your values?
I have always wanted to help others. Nursing has allowed me to do this while being able to be there for my family.
3. What educational and training background was required to enter this field?
I got my associates then continues on for my BSN. I am now working towards achieving my masters.
4. Did you plan your career or was it a product of Krumboltz’s Happenstance (you may have to define this theory for them)?
My mother was a nurse and I saw how satisfying the job was. Helping people was always something I wanted to do so I planned to become a nurse at a young age.
5. Are you satisfied with your profession? Why or why not?
Extremely satisfied! It is a high pace job which means I will never be bored. I also get to do what I love and have stability.
6. What opportunities for advancement exist, if any?
There are many opportunities to advance. Within a hospital, one can become a supervisor. Also, if one want to continue education, there are a multitude of different specialties that can further a nurse’s career.
7. What advice would you give prospective students on how to enter this field and ways to gain real experience?
My advice would be to get a job in the field. Many people do not realize how demanding and stressful it can get. It is better to know what you are getting into.

Units 4 & 5 Career Guidance Interviews

...Unit 4 and 5 Evaluate the purpose of different types of career guidance interviews Evaluate methodologies to explore the career guidance and development needs of clients Corney and Watts (1998) define information and advice as; ‘providing an immediate response to the needs of clients who present an enquiry or reveal a need that requires more than a straightforward information response. Advice is usually limited to helping with the interpretation of information and with meeting needs already clearly understood by the client…’ Advice and information is therefore concerned with meeting client’s presenting issues relating to information. The OECD (2004:10) definition of guidance is; ‘Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age, and at any point of their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers’. This reflects the variety of activities that may take place in supporting clients to move forward. Guidance is about helping clients to understand their own needs, set and review career goals, understand any barriers and to produce action plans. Hambly (2008; 16) refers to the iceberg analogy to explain the process of guidance. The top of the iceberg represents the clarifying and meeting of presented needs which is advice and information and the bottom of the iceberg is about exploring additional needs which is guidance. The guidance element may be about exploring high leverage...

...as it precisely fits my career plans. I first became interested in retail banking during an "Insight" course which I attended during my second year at University. Since then, discussion with my careers adviser and my own research have confirmed my belief that this is a career which will enable me to use not only my interest in business and finance but also my skills in working with people, both in an advisory and a managerial capacity. I am particularly interested in a career with Elsewhere Bank, because of the high reputation of your graduate training scheme, and your commitment to giving new recruits early responsibility. During my time as a student I have had a variety of part-time and vacation jobs, all of which have required me to work as part of a team and to deal directly with the public. I found my work at the Tourist Information Office particularly valuable in teaching me the importance of ascertaining customers' needs and providing clear and accurate information in response to those needs. As part of my degree course, I chose to carry out a final-year project which involved a statistical analysis of 150 questionnaires sent to local employers. To process this information, I taught myself to set up and use a database and felt great satisfaction in completing this project well ahead of the end-of-term deadline. Although my overall degree result was a 2.2., this particular piece of work was awarded a high 2.1. I will be available for interview at any time apart from...

Career Thory

...Abstract The purpose of this paper is to explain the career development process and outline an approach of how to progress through it. I will choose a specific Career Theory from the textbook that fits into my personal beliefs of human behavior and career development. I will provide the main points of this theory and use examples from my life to demonstrate how this theory will be beneficial. I will also identify any potential weaknesses or aspects that I may disagree with. What Is a Career? A career can be defined as the "time extended working out of a purposeful life pattern through work undertaken by the person" (Zunker, 2012). This also includes "activities and positions involved in vocations, occupations, and jobs as well as to related activities with an individual's lifetime of work" (Zunker, 2012). A career should be a job that one benefits from not only monetarily but also in some personal way. People should be careful in choosing a career because most people spend over half of their lives working. If one chooses the right career than they can lead a happier life. So many people have what can be considered job instead of a career. A job where one works only to receive money can lead one to be unhappy and cause quite a bit of stress. Overtime this can have an effect on an individual’s overall health. This is why the idea of career development can be so important. What is Career Development? Career development can be defined as a process in which...

...Preparing For A Career Change Schuylar Robinson, Kerry Wilson, Deborah West, Airyn Vath, Sheila Rone RES/351 January 21, 2012 Richard Dickens Preparing For A Career Change Preparing for a career change can be difficult yet rewarding. A career is the course of a person's life in working to produce an income to make ends meet. A career is also associated with the productive side of life, what a person's goals are and sometimes his or her accomplishments (Cochran. 1994). There are many obstacles that some may consider to be problems when changing careers. Individuals may be looking to change careers from result of too much stress or personality conflicts with their current coworkers or management. Career problems occurs when a current course of action signals a qualitative difference between possible career futures (Cochran). The only way to change one's direction in life is to take that first step into a career change. This means furthering one's education to climb the corporate ladder or accepting a new career that offers more pay, more vacation time, and personal satisfaction of making a difference in the workplace. The purpose of a career change is "to move into a position of greater managerial responsibility and organizational...

Managing Career

...Theory I. Definition of Career Concepts • Career is a series of job posisitions that people have held during their work life. Many people look back on their careers, knowing that what they might have achieved they did achieve, and that their careers, their lives and their potential went unfulfilled. • Career management is a process that enables employees to understand and develop their career skills and interest, and to use them effectively.
