...Case of Karen Carpenter Virginia A Hess PSY 410 December 12, 2013 Kelley Smith Case of Karen Carpenter Anorexia nervosa happens when an individual fixates on being thin. The individual with anorexia will become obsessed with the amount of food that he or she will intake. Individuals with anorexia usually decline to consume food as well as are in denial about being hungry. These individuals are also scared to get weight as well as view themselves in a bad way. They tend to avoid social situations that involve eating. These individuals suffer from different physical problems for example dizziness/fainting, dry skin, dehydration, constipation, as well as decreased blood pressure level (Hansell & Damour, 2008). This can also result in death like in the case of Karen Carpenter. This paper will be discussing her tragic struggle with this disorder. Case Karen Carpenter was an American singer who battled with anorexia nervosa in the 1960’s. Her struggle with disorder would bring eating disorders to the public and would later contribute to her death. At an early age Karen was teased by her older brother being called “fatso”. Her mother also would make comments that made her aware of her flawed body figure. Her mother would remind her of the fact that big hips run in the family. At the age of 17 she lost 25 pounds. Career At the age of 19 Karen and her brother were signed to A&M Records. This would be the start to Karen being in the spotlight. Being...

...Poetry: Interpretive Essay Poem title: The Carpenter’s Compliant The Carpenter In the poem “The Carpenter’s Compliant,” by a Jamaican poet Edward Baugh shows us the deep sentiment that the poor expresses. The Carpenter is in a bar complaining about who his friend’s, who died recently, son choose to build the coffin. Instead of him he chooses to let the big shot Mr. Belnavis to build the coffin. Through the use of colloquial language, irony, diction and alliteration in the poem, Baugh expresses within the simple heart there is purity of feeling, caring and generosity as reflected in the Carpenter. This poem does not have any great structure. The poem does not have any kind of rhyme scheme. The poem brings the moment the carpenter was complaining in the bar. In the first stanza of the poem the Carpenter show he wants honesty and pride. His “friend” (l. 2) recently die and his son “wants a nice job for the coffin” (l. 5). The Carpenter also says that he is not well recognized by his friend’s son even though he builds “the house that him live in” (l. 3). Notice the poet try to make the poem vivid. In line four the Carpenter refers to his friend’s son by “that mawga-foot bwoy” (l. 4). This creates an image in the readers mind to visualize the situation and the way the people speak. In the second stanza of the poem the Carpenter speaks of “Mister Belnavis” (l. 6), the “big belly crook” (l. 7). Listen to the colloquial language used in line seven, “who don’t know him...

...I. Introduction Greetings to everyone in receipt of this briefing hope your research processes are coming along. It has been brought to my attention that we may encounter some resource concerns with this global launch. The fabrics we use domestically cannot be shipped or exported so we need to address this concern. As far as textiles go we will need to look into alternatives for the Italy global expansion. Seen there are various concerns with resources that often come up with global expansion we will need to look into and address them all during this briefing. One of our board members use to run a textile plant in China so we will see if they still have contacts and that very well could solve and address our textile issues but not the others we may face. II. Global Strategy concerns for Resources The global expansion of a business opens untapped opportunities for the organizations growth especially in markets that are emerging and or contain fast-growth. With the opportunities that global expansion brings it also has a particular set of challenges associated with it; changes such as market-entry strategy, supply chain sourcing, building a consumer base, and manufacturing. On top of all of this you need to add financing, taxation, human resources, textiles, technology (where needed), natural resources, managerial resources considerations and so on. It becomes trickier and trickier. So let’s discuss some of the concerns we need to address with global strategy and available resources...

Carpenters rhetoric throughout his life and works encompasses the intrinsic and symbolic intertwining of the physical reality of nature in the exploration of consciousness, societal structures and critique. The comparative value of both poems to each other and the wider world is clear through the apparent symbolism, progressive connotations and stylistic approach displayed. The main...

...In the novel “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” what sticks out to me the most is that the narrator is not the protagonist. You would think at first that Chief Bromden the one who is a “Chronic” would have a flawed mental state. However that is not the case because Bromden is adept at describing what he sees. He also sees the true intention of Nurse Ratched and pretends that he is deaf. What is surprising is that McMurphy the new admission is very happy to be in a hospital for the insane. I still don’t know whether it’s all a play to get on the other patient good side or part of his true character. He notices that Chief Bromden is not really deaf and winks to Bromden that he knows. This tells me that McMurphy is someone who is not easily fooled. Another thing that sticks out is that there are names given to the different types of mental patients in the novel. The “Acutes” and “Chronics” differ in their mental state but are kept in the same ward. I am thinking about the Nurse Ratched's true intention in the novel. Where does she fit into the progression of the novel and will her McMurphy clash? The characters that are supposedly “mad” would be the “Chronics” because as the novel puts it they are “the culls of the Combine’s product” (Page 15). However, to me they are not really mad they just need some guidance. I think the person that is really “mad” is Nurse Ratched because she puts on a facade when certain people are present. Chief Bromden points out that“she has to change back...

...Name of the Assignment Xylocopa Sp around the world Introduction The genus Xylocopa (in the subfamily Xylocopinae) is commonly known as ‘Carpenter Bees’ and one of the large bees distributed worldwide. It consists near about 500 species in 31 subgenera. The word ‘carpenter’ comes from the fact that nearly all of its species use dead wood, bamboo, or structural timbers to build their nest. Associated members of the related tribe Ceratinini are often referred to as ‘small carpenter bees’. Taxonomy In 1802, the genus was described by French entomologist Pierre André Latreille. The name was derived from the ancient Greek word xylokopos which had a meaning of ‘wood-cutter’. Characteristics The females of several species live along with their own daughters or sisters and create a small social group. They employ wood bits to form partitions between chambers in the nest. But some species are not interested in making holes in wood dwellings. Although many species are known to rob nectar by slitting the sides of flowers with deep corollas, the species of Xylocopa can be important pollinators on open-faced flowers. In the United States, there are two eastern species: Xylocopa virginica and Xylocopa micans. On the other hand, Xylocopa varipuncta, Xylocopa tabaniformis orpifex and Xylocopa californica are the names of three other species that are primarily western by distribution. X. virginica is a widely distributed species. Some species are often mistaken for...

... The change in market during the period went from a middle-aged high school educated audience in the mid 60s, to a younger, more affluent, college-educated demographic and by the mid 70s, a majority of all moviegoers were at least under 30. There was desperation in studios during this period due to status of the economy. The best thing that happened to the filmmakers was that they brought an emphasis on realism (Citation 1). The movie “Halloween” is known as one the greatest independent slasher films ever, created off of a budget of $300,000 and brought $70,000,000 in revenue. Halloween was directed by John Carpenter, produced by Debra Hill and written between the both of them. The movie was set in Haddonfield, Illinois, mainly on Halloween 1978. This movie was the break for “New Hollywood” actress Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode). John Carpenter was paid $10,000 for writing, directing and composing the music, plus he gained 10% of the rights from the film’s profits. With such a low budget, the actors and actresses had to provide their own wardrobe, and props had to be created with the materials that they had or could be bought inexpensively. For example, the mask worn by Michael Myers in the film was created from a Captain...

...John Carpenter’s Halloween: A Film Critique Michael Chapes Instructor David Hayes ENG 225 February 13, 2014 “It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare.” - Sheriff Leigh Brackett As long as there have been stories, there have been stories about the other, the unrealities we might categorize today as fantasy... Early myths in all cultures are populated by demons and darkness, early Egyptian mythology resounds with tales of a world beyond the physical, a realm of the spirits, to be revered and feared. Classical mythology is filled with monsters such as the Cerberus, the Minotaur, Medusa, the Hydra, the Sirens, Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, to name just a few. Every culture has a set of stories dealing with the unknown and unexplained, tales that chill, provoke and keep the listener wondering "what if..?" Horror films are the present-day version of the epic poems and ballads told round the fires of our ancestors. Horror movies of the 1970s reflect the grim mood of the decade. After the optimism of the 1960s, with its sexual and cultural revolutions, and the moon landings, the seventies was something of a disappointment. By 1970, the party was over; the Beatles split, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix died, while John Kennedy, his brother Robert, and Martin Luther King were all felled by an assassin’s bullet. These tragedies seemed to be just the first domino to fall, for then came Nixon...

...MORE THAN A CARPENTER BOOK SUMMARY By Josh McDowell, published by Tyndale house, Wheaton – Illinois, 1977:127 pages The author aims at demonstrating the uniqueness of Jesus, who is more than a carpenter. He does this by asking ten serious questions, which forms his chapter divisions, which are in-depth in trying to understand the identity of Jesus. In his preface, Mr McDowell argues that so many historians have agreed that Jesus lived one of the greatest life ever lived. His beauty is eternal and his reign shall never end. He is in every respect unique and nothing can be compared with him. All history is incomprehensible without Christ. In the first question, Mr. McDowell endeavours to investigate what makes Jesus different. Although Jesus was a great religious leader that only does not make him different and unique from others.. Mohammed, Buddha and other religious were great as well. Several things are highlighted by the author that make Jesus unique. Jesus was different because he was God. The gospels clearly states that he was 100 percent God. That meant that what God the father was able to do, he was also able to do, for example forgiveness of sins. Secondly, Jesus received worship and honour like that of God the Father. All that was due to the Father was accorded to Jesus. And also, Jesus was equal with the Father in nature. He was from the beginning eternal, not created. With this well reason out statements, McDowell explains clearly what makes Jesus different...

...The Journal of Helen Carpenter The Journal of Helen Carpenter Alana Vess August 17, 2015 HIS/110 Timothy Hayburn The Journal of Helen Carpenter Dear Journal, it’s me Helen again. I know it’s been a long time since I have written but, to be honest I have just been too busy to write. I was married about five months ago to Mr. Aurelius Carpenter, “he is on the abolitionist side and while he was fighting for the free-state movement he was wounded and I helped nurse him back to his health (2012).” The year is now 1857 and we have decided to travel west to California and in doing so we will be taking the Oregon Trail. I must admit I am terrified, not only about traveling by oxen and wagon through this journey to the new land but also what or who we may cross paths with along the way. One good thing about our journey is my parents are traveling in their wagon behind us so if anything happens to myself or the baby while on this journey I have my mother to help. A few of our neighbors and friends have also decided to make this trek with us because the food and supplies are dwindling down back in Kansas. The bad thing about this journey is that wagon space is very limited so we have had to leave the majority of our belongings behind. With all of that aside we are hoping that California will be a better source for us and have better soil for gardening and...

...Identify a company (or school) that has been a target of a network or system intrusion? What information was targeted? Was the attack successful? If so, what changes has the company (or school) made to ensure that this vulnerability has been controlled? As a response to the question, I would like to present a case of cyber espionage that happened in 2004 with the US Military and Defense. The series of attacks were designated as the Titan Rain by the FBI and known as one of the largest attacks in the history of Cyber espionage. Some claims that the attack was ongoing for three years while other believes they lasts for several days.(http://www.dvice.com/archives/2010/09/7_of_the_most_d.php) The main purpose of the attack was to steal confidential and sensitive information and patterns of the US army. Upon my research I have found out that there are many have assumptions about who can be the potential attacker and most of them claims that it could be either China (government supported cells) or Chinese mafia. In one particular article the author James A. Lewis contradicts the these assumptions and states that the attack was taken in action by the bored teenagers of California just for excitement as US officials performed further research. James points out that the intelligence services of China are not so lousy and clumsy would leave footprints after the operation. He also adds that China having one of the most sophisticated opponent and can launch an attack from other contraries...

...It was a spooky forest, dull, grey and filled with twisted trees, branches that reached out and the deeply cracked bark. The trees surrounding the edge of the forest with the branches clustered and tangled together which created an archway which dared people to enter its midst. These were far from a silent set of woods though. They had the smell of rotten corpses. There was always a thick fog that was visible in the forest. It felt like a monsters den, howling every night that was heard miles away. Paulina was a great person, she loved going on adventures and exploring places. She was young and was free. It was her ambition, so one day, she heard about the forest, due to her ambition she wanted to visit it. It was a cold and dark night, the frost hit her, the cold frost hitting against her with the wind. She walked through the fog towards the archway created by the trees, all that she could see was darkness. She entered... Carrying on for only about 15 minutes and then stopped. She shifted her view to her left and to the right to see if anything else apart from the darkness was visible. There was rarely any light coming from anywhere apart the gleaming moon on the puddles... But the puddles didn’t look like ordinary puddles. They gave out a dark red colour like blood. It made her insides turn, for assuming the worst. She panicked, all alone she had no one to turn to apart from herself of course. She stood out in the middle with her bright hair and skin. She slowly pulled out her...
