TERMS COMMONLY USED:

TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC):

The top most position of the piston towards the cylinder head and the topside of the cylinder of the vertical engine are called top dead center position.

BOTTOM DEAD CENTER (BDC):

The lowest most position of the piston towards the crank end side of the cylinder of a vertical engine is called bottom dead center position.

WORKING OF FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE:

The working cycle of the engine is completed in four strokes and diesel oil is used as fuel. Therefore it is known as four-stroke diesel engine. The following are the four working stroke of the engine.

SUCTION STROKE:

The piston is at the top most position and is ready to move downwards.
Inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed. As the piston moves downwards
Air enters the cylinder through the inlet valve due to the vacuum created. This continues closes. The downward movement of the piston is known as suction stroke and crank rotates by 1800during this period.

COMPRESSION STROKE:

During this both the inlet and exhaust valves are closed and the piston moves upwards and compresses the air enclosed in the cylinder. The air is finally compressed to a high pressure of about 40 to 60 kgf/cm2and high temperature of the air about 600 to 10000C. This high temperature air is enough to ignite the fuel.

EXPANSION STROKE:

During this stroke the inlet and exhaust valve are closed and the fuel nozzle opens just before the beginning of the third stroke. The supply of the fuel is combined during the small part of the expansion stroke. Combustion of the fuel is temperature gases pushes the fuel valve is closed. The exhaust valve opens when the piston reaches the bottom dead center.

EXHAUST STROKE:

During this stroke the inlet and fuel valve remains closed and the exhaust valve is opened, piston moves upward in the cylinder and pushes out the burnt gases. The piston reaches the top dead center completing the exhaust and is ready for the next cycle.

COMPONENTS OF ENGINE:

CYLINDER HEAD:

The cylinder head closed the cylinder. It houses inlet and outlet valves through which the charge is taken inside the cylinder from the atmosphere. The cylinder head is usually cast as one piece and bolted to the top of the cylinder. Copper and asbestos gasket is provided between cylinder and the cylinder head to obtain gas-tight joint. The material used for the cylinder head is also cast iron.

CRANK AND CRANK SHAFT:

Both crank and crankshaft are made of forged steel machined to a smooth finish.
The two are held together by means of a key. Crankshaft is supported on main bearing and has a heavy wheel, called flywheel to even out the fluctuation of torque. The power required for any useful purpose is taken off from crankshaft. The crankshaft is the backbone of the engine.

FUEL NOZZLE:

The function of the fuel is to break-up the oil fine spray as it enters the cylinder.

FUEL PUMP:

It forces the fuel oil high pressure through fuel into the cylinder at the end of compression stroke in diesel engine.

RESULT:

Thus the various components and mechanism of four stroke diesel engine have been studied.

TERMS COMMONLY USED:

TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC): The top most position of the piston towards the cover and the side of the cylinder of a vertical engine is called Top Dead Center position.

The lowest position of the piston towards the crank end side of the cylinder of a vertical engine is called bottom dead center position.

The working cycle of the engine is completed in four strokes and petrol is used as fuel. Therefore it is known as four-stroke petrol engine. The following are the four working stroke of the engine.

SUCTION STROKE:

The piston is at the top center most position and is ready to move downward to allow the mixture of petrol and air. Inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed. As the piston moves downward a fresh charge of petrol air mixture enter the Cylinder through the inlet valve due to the suction created. Until the piston reaches Bottom Dead Center (BDC). At this position the inlet valve closes due to the downward movement of the piston known as suction stroke i.e., crank rotates by 1800.

COMPRESSION STROKE: During this stroke both the valves closed and the piston moves upward and compresses the charge enclosed in the cylinder. The pressure and temperature of the mixture increases continuously during this process. As the piston reaches the TDC the mixture is more or less instantaneous and the pressure and temperature of the gases increases while the volume remains constant.

POWER STROKE: The increased pressure of the mixture exerts a large force and pushes the piston down. During power stroke the high temperature gases push downwards and the gas pressure gradually decreases. During this stroke the piston moves from TDC to BDC. This stroke is called power stroke. The exhaust valve open as the piston reaches the BDC position and pressure falls suddenly to atmospheric pressure at constant volume.

EXHAUST STROKE:

During the upward motion of the piston the exhaust is open and the inlet valve is closed. The piston moves up in the cylinder pushing out the burnt gases through the exhaust valve as the piston reaches the TDC. Again the inlet valve is open and the fresh charge is taken in during next in during next downward movement of the piston and the same process once again.

PARTS OF ENGINE:

CYLINDER: The cylinder of an IC engine is considered as the main body of the engine. It has to withstand high pressure of about 70kgf/cm2 and high temperature of 28000C. Generally cast iron is used as body material but for heavy-duty alloy steels are used.

PISTON:

The function of the piston is to compress the charge during compression stroke and to transmit the gas force to the connecting rod and then to the crank during the power stroke. The piston is made up of cast iron steel and aluminum alloy, which has high thermal conductivity and low specific gravity.

CONNECTING ROD: It is usually made of steel forging of circular, rectangular, I, H (or) T section and is highly polished to increase the endurance strength. One end (smaller end) of the connecting rod is connect to the piston through hinge and pin joint while other end (large end) is connected to the crank shaft through the crank pin. It has passage for lubricating oil.

INLET VALVE:

The inlet valve control the admission of the charge (petrol-air mixture) and lubricating oil into the engine during suction stroke.

EXHAUST VALVE: The removal of exhaust gases from the cylinder by the upward movement of piston is done by the exhaust valve.

SPARK PLUG:

The function of spark plug is to ignite the charge after compression. It is mounted on the cylinder head.

RESULT:

Thus the components and mechanism of four-stroke petrol engine have been studied.
