Logitech Case - Discussion Question 3

...Use the theory of comparative advantage to explain the way in which Logitech has configured its global operations. Why does the company manufacture in China and Taiwan, undertake basic R&D in California and Switzerland, design products in Ireland, and coordinate marketing and operations from California? According to Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage, nations will invest all their resources to produce what they can produce most effectively. They should focus on the product which they can produce most effectively even if they were able to produce a certain product more effectively than other countries. This theory is applied as follows. Regarding China, it is cost effective to assemble and manufacture there. China is the most populous country, and it is important for the Chinese government to provide work environments for its people to earn their living. So a plant for high-volume manufacturing is a good way of employing many people. Even now there are a lot of semi-literature people in China. This resource can manufacture products which need semi-skilled labour most efficiently because of their low wage. Thus, Logitech uses China to manufacture mice. While Taiwan, it is giving land in their industrial parks at very nominal rates. Taiwan’s IT industry is also expanding and the quality is high level. So Taiwan had developed a strong supply base for computer parts, it has skillful people. Logitech is taking advantage of the facilities. As regards California, it is...

HOW TO PREPARE A CASE STUDY There is no single right way to prepare a case study, but this note may help you develop your own methods for preparation that will be effective in understanding the issues presented in the case and preparing for class discussion of those issues. In general, I have found the following approach helpful in analyzing a case study for class discussion. 1. Read the case as quickly as you can as if it were a story. Ask yourself, "What is this case generally about and what types of issues are being discussed?" Examine the introductory and concluding sections especially for hints regarding the key issues addressed in the case. 2. Review the case again, looking carefully for key facts and underlining key information as you go. Ask yourself, "What are the basic problems this manager or company needs to resolve?" and "What data do we have available to analyze the issues raised in the case?" Try to put yourself in the position of the manager and develop a sense of involvement in his or her position. Do not use lack of information...

...Coursework Questions and Instructions Coursework will consist of group work leading to (a) an active discussion and (b) a written report on one of the case studies. At the beginning of term, student groups will be randomly assigned to one of the following two cases: “Valuation of AirThread Connections” or “Dividend Policy at FPL Group, Inc.” Please find out which case you have been allocated to and the week in which that case is discussed. In the following I explain which deadlines you have to meet and how effort towards each deadline contributes to your coursework mark: • Deadline 1. You must read up your case material and prepare oral answers to the case questions by the Thursday lecture to which your case discussion is allocated. Groups that have not prepared before the case discussion will suffer a coursework mark penalty. The penalty will be 10 points of the coursework mark (e.g., a drop from 60% on your submission to 50% overall). Groups that have fully prepared and present their arguments during the class discussion in a lively and enthusiastic way will receive a 5-point coursework mark uplift (e.g., an increase from 70% to 75%). • Deadline 2. The next deadline is for submission of your complete case report. This must be done on Moodle, by the Thursday one week after the case discussion week. Therefore, the deadlines for submitting the written report are as follows: – Groups assigned to the AirThread case: Thursday 27 March – Groups assigned to the FPL case: Thursday 3...
