Kurt was in and out of rehabilitation centers for his drug addiction, and soon before his death had, what people considered at the time, an accidental overdose in Rome. Despite the extraordinary progress America has made toward racial equality, racially motivated violence is not yet a thing of the past. In recent years, racial violence has become increasingly linked to law enforcement. Incidents of police brutality have become frequent in recent years as a result of continuing racial profiling. This is exemplified in the case of George Floyd. Floyd was unarmed and nonthreatening at the time of his death in police custody. An employee had accused him at a nearby store of paying for a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill, and the police were called. Upon their arrival, Floyd was approached by four officers and subsequently pinned to the ground for nine unending minutes by Derek Chauvin, a white arresting officer. After six minutes, Floyd was unresponsive and a pulse was not detected. Chauvin did not remove his knee for another three and a half minutes. Incidents like the death of George Floyd bring to light the influence that historical prejudice and bias still have in our country. This tragedy also highlights that despite the withdrawal of directly anti-black policies, those in positions of power are systematically oppressing black Americans. And it is nothing new. According to Uniformed Crime Reporting, provided by the FBI, there were a total of 85,483 sexual offense incidents reported in 2015 to law enforcement agency across the United States. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, NCMEC reports: 1 in 6 of the 18,500 runaways reported to NCMEC in 2016, were likely sex trafficking victims; and NCMEC has received more than 12.7 million reports of suspected child sexual exploitation from 1998 to June 2016. These glaring statistics would indicate that criminal acts of sexual assaults against other people is an obvious problem and one that cannot be ignored or diminished through ignorance.
