Case Study Analysis Paper
ABC, Inc. recruits, hires, and trains its own employees. Carl Robins, the new campus recruiter failed to organize, follow-up, and reserve a room to train his new recruits. Robins either failed to follow a specific guideline in place for the process of organizing and training new trainees or a specific guideline was not given to him. He assumed certain things and procrastinated, therefore, created a situation of disorder. As a consequence he must make up for lost time and actively correct his incomplete situation.
The challenges Robins created by not planning thoroughly were: incomplete files on each new recruit, incomplete orientation manuals for the new trainees, and not securing the training room for orientation. Robins has less than two weeks to correct his mistakes and creatively come up with a solution for not have a room for training.
This case involved issues concerning organization and follow through. Robins needed to initiate a detailed plan. To ensure success ABC, Inc. needs a proper training system in place for new recruits as well as a system in place for its new campus recruiter to follow. Robins faces the challenge of making up for lost time and lost resources. This analysis will focus on the issues surrounding lack of planning and organization within ABC, Inc. training and orientation system; as well as the failed action of its new recruiter Carl Robins. One of the key problems is the lack of checks and balances system for Carl Robins to follow when hiring, submitting paperwork, training, and orienting new recruits. ABC, Inc. failed to provide Robins with a system or Robins failed to utilize a system in place. Some steps that need to be accomplished immediately are * Robins must secure a reservation of a new room for training * Each new trainees file needs to be complete * Robins must copy completed orientation manuals for each new trainee * Robins needs to meet with Monica Carrolls to report the failures and to strategize a plan for success completion of orientation.
New Location
A vital step is to secure another location for the training. Robins has to decide if that site will be within ABC, Inc. or an outside location. Robins needs adequate space in the new location. He needs proper equipment and supplies available in the new location. Robins may have to be flexible with his scheduling to accomplish this task.
New Trainee Files Robins needs to review and obtain paperwork for each trainee file. Each file needs to include; application, transferred transcript, results of physical, results of drug testing.
Complete Operation Manuals Robins’ must obtain a complete copy of the orientation manual; one for each trainee. Robins needs to gather any other training supplies.
Meeting with Operations Supervisor
Robins needs to meet with Monica Carrolls to report the failures and to strategize a plan for success completion of orientation. The operations supervisor needs to be aware that some of the steps in the orientation and training process have not been accomplished. She needs to be aware of alternative actions Robins has in place in the event the process fails to execute before the deadline of July 1st.
Possible Solutions
According to SLAL human resources web page “Communication sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of day-to-day responsibilities. Consider sitting down with your supervisor—or supervisees—to review expectations, including performance and work schedule” (2013). A system for hiring, scheduling, and training should be in place so that steps are not missed in this vital process. Checking in with his supervisor may have prevented some of the missed steps in this process. Robins needed a clear structure to follow. A generic system that ABC, Inc. could have in place to help its campus recruiter is: * Interview and choose said recruits * 60 days before orientation schedule room for training, * 45 days before training meet with department head of new trainees, review expectations of training schedule, material supplied, and verify complete orientation packets and training materials for each new trainee * 30 days before training verify each new trainee file includes: application, transcripts, results of physical, results of drug testing * 15 days before training confirm room reservation and review orientation and training procedures * 10 days before training review new trainees files, send out reminder to new trainees of orientation schedule
Robins must list his problems and devise a plan to accomplish the tasks not finished. He has limited time in which to achieve these responsibilities so he must remain focused and concise. Robins can use this event as a learning tool, taking what worked and what did not work to create a system for success in the future. Richard Branson, owner and CEO of Virgin Mobile, says “Honesty isn’t just the best policy, it’s the only policy, notes Branson. When a mistake is made, don’t let it consume you. Uncover the problem and get to work fixing it” (2012). This is true of Robins’ situation; he must uncover the problems and set to work on correcting them.
