...Case Study 1: Ethics and Local Governance Introduction to Information Technology July , 2013 In 2007 a Transformational Government mandate focused on customer budget reductions of 3 percent year to year increasing the emphasis on regionally shared services for the London Borough of Brent. The area is approximately 270,000 citizens with the London Borough of Brent information scattered across numerous departments without the ability to share any of the information across the enterprise. The decision to create a master client index that will clean up duplicate and fragmented data files, improve operational efficiencies, there are over 1.5 million records of the 2700,000 citizens that will be matched and linked from several different databases, providing a real time view of each customer’s data, this process will be very beneficial and achieve optimal operational efficiency. The two potential ethics issues associated with the consolidation of citizen records in the London Borough of Bren. First the privacy of the information of the citizens within those records may contain intimate details about their lives that should be kept private would probably be my biggest ethics issues concern. Some people enjoy their privacy and don’t want their information readily available for people to see without their consent. Some of information of the citizens records listed within the database could be very sensitive and personal information about someone’s disabilities, medical records, mental...

...Running Header: Ethics Ethics and Local Governance Tristanjay V. Llantada Dr. Amir Afzal CIS 106 OCT 28, 2012 Ethics and Local Governance Whether dealing with business or local government, having to follow an ethical standard can help create an environment for people to feel comfortable. In a society where your data can be manipulated and use wrongfully, feeling comfortable will be hard to consider. Having an unstable system on a local government level, those stores your data can have an impact on a person’s life. For a while, the London Borough of Brent in the U.K. (United Kingdom) has stored citizen’s data on 12 different databases. The council’s divisions have their own copy of a resident’s data. Those copies were either incomplete or incorrect. The council also has two customer relationship management systems that have their own data of the resident with incontinences. First problem in this situation is that all of the resident’s data are scattered across different databases. Second issue is each database has different information then what another database has. “Employees would spend much of their time calling other departments to find out supplementary information” (Hudson, H. 2011, November 3). Confusion to a resident may occur if one department knows that person has a disability but other departments might have them as having no disability. In order to fix this huge problem, the council used what was called the Brent Client...

...Executive Summary Our teams goal is to establish how Agrium has transitioned from a local Calgary based Corporation to a large corporation with an apparent “Global Organization” model. We are interested in understanding how they have grown into a world leader in their industry. We will identify where they started, where they are today in mining and technology, and how they reach consumers all over the world while maintaining their vertical control from their headquarters in Calgary; by analysing Agrium’s history, corporate structure, and three key business units. At the end of this case study we hope other Canadian organizations will adopt the Agrium model when they consider expanding operations globally. ...CASE STUDY H&M WORKPLACE Fire safety is a major issue in Bangladeshi garment factories. Poor electrical installations and bad maintenance often create significant fire hazards. In order to make a safe workplace the norm throughout the sector, we think that it is essential to involve all stakeholders such as the government, industry organisations, trade unions and other brands. This is why we developed two training films to increase fire safety awareness amongst employees at all levels in garment factories. We teamed up with 18 other brands and employer associations in the sector, BGMEA and BKMEA, to spread this training. According to BGMEA, more than 1,250 factories and 100,000 workers received the training. Based on a study that we conducted in 2011, we raised the concern of lapsed fire-safety licenses with the Government of Bangladesh and engaged the Bangladeshi University of Engineering and Technology as well as a specialist to assess the electrical installation in four factories. These assessments were finalised in spring 2012 and their results were presented to concerned stakeholders at a seminar in Dhaka. The most common shortcomings in regards to electrical safety such as poor-quality materials, poor maintenance and lack of proper electrician training were discussed. During the seminar, a number of actions were proposed, including introducing stricter legislation and inspections. In order to set a good example, we have stipulated that all our supplier factories...

...PORTFOLIO OF EVIDENCE The Student’s Name The Name of the Class Professor The Name of the University The city and State where it is Located The Date PORTFOLIO OF EVIDENCE Business Ethics is standards of guiding behavior of both an individual and the business. They are principles of acting ethically. When a company or an individual is acting morally, it means that they can make the right choice. Only by making a distinction between what is wrong and what is right (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2003). Business ethics is, therefore, meant to guide controversial issues in a company environment. These issues include corporate social responsibility, discrimination, unlawful practices, corporate governance, bribery or corruption, insider trading and other irresponsible business behaviors. Ethics is at times guided by local frameworks chosen by different companies. These structures act as a way of enhancing their image and public trust, but it is a requirement that values is guided by a duly constituted legal framework (Paliwal, 2006). This paper, therefore, discusses business ethics in an organizational context and also delves into ethical dilemmas, moral leadership, interpersonal skills and teamwork in an enterprise environment. Appendix A- The Ethical Leadership Debate Ethical leadership incorporates two key aspects. The first point refers to the way the leader treats and works with the subordinates...

...The Corporate Social Responsibility: A Review of Literature Yassin H. Yassin UNDP, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia November 2005 Introduction Business organisations strive to survive by the efficient use of the factors of production and other facilities of the society. This process puts organizations in an interdependent relation with the government, the community at large and the environment. Such interdependence gives rise to a series of broader responsibilities to society in general (Mullins, 2005). Mullins further illustrates that the social responsibilities are both internal and external to the organisations. Presently, there is an increasing concern with the social responsibilities of organisations. This is reflected in part by the extent of government action and legislation on such matters as, for instance, employment protection, equal opportunities, company’s acts, consumer law, product liability and safeguarding the environment (Mullins, 2005). Based on this the social responsibilities of organisations have turned into a legal requirement. Business Stakeholders Palmer and Hartley (2002) argue that business organisations should act in a socially responsible manner for two self-evident reasons: one philosophic and the other pragmatic. Philosophically, models of a responsible society require organisations to do their part along with the family and other social institutions (the schools, the religious institutions, etc.). Pragmatically, organisations...

...Societies in this century and the previous ones have been victims to unlawful, racial discriminated unrests. Unrests which have been known to be quite damaging not only to the victims of the act but rather the community as well. Regardless of the government’s ability to control and manage any offensive events in the community, cases still seem to arise in the community. It’s evident for a need communication and an understanding of crisis management, peaceful resolutions to the crisis in order to obtain a community fracas and hostile free.
