...Starbucks Case Study Only thirty years ago the Starbucks Coffee Company was a mere small town coffee shop located in Seattle, Washington. Howard Schultz, then a young entrepreneur, was fond of the coffee shop and aspired to build the company into the giant franchise that it is today after being inspired by a trip to Italy. Starbucks has become one of the biggest coffee restaurants in the world and has become a household word. The Starbucks brand provided its customers with gourmet coffees, espresso’s, and lattes and a specialized environment that gave customers a place to enjoy their Starbucks products. Initially, Starbucks Coffee Company segmented and targeted the coffee market by geographic location. Starbucks CEO, Schultz, achieved such success with expanding the small town coffee shop that over the initial course of twenty years, the franchise went from consisting of only a few small venues to having almost seventeen thousand stores with locations in dozens of countries around the world. Schultz had great ambition to open over ten thousand more stores over the course of the next four years and then set on to his next goal – which was to open an additional forty thousand stores. With so much success happening so quickly, the market for Starbucks eventually began to slow and even reverse. The company had to reanalyze the way it did business if it wanted to survive and maintain its identity. Rapid expansion and overwhelming popularity, the experience the customers once...

...Case Study: Out-of-Town Brown and the Besieged Probation Supervisor Team B CJA 464 September 2, 2015 Harry Kirk Case Study: Out-of-Town Brown and the Besieged Probation Supervisor The case is if Casey decides to talk with the reporter about officer’s recommendation, she should relate things to researched data. One useful piece of information is that about half of prison inmates are arrested and returned to prison soon after release from an institution (Beck, 1989). In this case, though the crime may sound horrific, the offender is low-risk; and moreover, he suffered emotional as well as physical abuse, sexual abuse, and that forced him to psychological disorder. As Prisons are meant for high-risk offenders, this offender may have so intermediate sanctions that may include fines, community corrections, home confinement, electronic monitoring, intensive probation supervision, and boot camps. These sanctions have better supervision than used in prisons. We know that first time offenders committing mid-level crimes and of low risk are eligible for intermediate sanction. This saves money without posing public threat. As intermediate sanctions are applicable for only specific offenders, probation officers have to put offenders in appropriate programs suiting their needs and treatment. Social skills and employments skills can be improved by placing offenders in intermediate sanction. Standard probation, a community service program, or fines can be sentenced if the offender...

...Decades after sprawl infected American suburbia there has been a movement called new urbanism which thought to fight the effects of sprawl. Looking at sprawl we can use the Lowcountry as a case study. When taking Charleston and the outer lying towns into consideration, we see that their minimal public transportation and large highways that are often congested and problematic to the daily commuter. Unfortunately, this area, in my opinion, does have a smaller scale of sprawl. In order to do any daily activity, it is almost entirely dependent on car travel. Although we do have the Carta bus system it is often looked over by many residents. This area has developed so quickly that local governments didn't fully grasp how much a quality public transit...

...Case Study The information in the Case Study is used each week when writing the individual sections of the Marketing Communications Plan. One of your neighbors has just inherited a restaurant in a small town about 75 miles away. They’ve never owned or operated a business before, and know very little about marketing or the restaurant business. They now have a Marketing Plan, but need help with the Marketing Communications Plan. General Restaurant Information Provided by Your Neighbors: 1. They want to keep the “family’s” restaurant as a legacy to their family members who left it to them. However, they will need to make money immediately in order to replace the income they lost when they quit their jobs to run the restaurant. 2. The restaurant has been losing sales/profits over the past few years. Family members have had some health issues (and have since passed away) and have not had the time to manage the restaurant effectively. For the past few months, the Chef and some of the servers have been keeping the restaurant open. 3. The restaurant has a good reputation in the small community. The town has a population of 6,000 people. It is in a good location (right off an interstate) and does additional sales catering to local businesses in the area. Over-the-road semi-drivers say it is the best cup of coffee in town and town’s people know that you can always find the local sheriff and highway patrol officers eating there. People are allowed to smoke at their...

...Source: ESMT - European School of Management and Technology 20 pages. Publication date: Mar 27, 2009. Prod. #: ES0961-PDF-ENG This is a two part case study that explores Celtel Nigeria's innovative approach to serving the rural poor. Case A provides an overview of the mobile telecommunications market in Nigeria as of mid 2007, as well as detailed demographic and socioeconomic information. At the time of the case, Celtel Nigeria is the second largest mobile telecommunications company in the Nigerian market. The company has experienced considerable success in serving Nigeria's cities and larger towns, but has only recently shifted its attention to serving poorer consumers in rural areas - a massive but as of yet under tapped market. But this shift from urban to rural has not been easy, and although some 50% of Nigeria's population lives in rural regions the challenges of reaching them sometimes seem overwhelming. The absence of a reliable national electricity grid means that the company's rural telecommunications towers have to be run on diesel generators, resulting in high maintenance and diesel fuel costs. Theft and vandalism of expensive communications equipment and generators has emerged as a major concern, resulting in the need to employ full-time security guards on virtually every base station site outside of urban areas. At the end of case A, Celtel Nigeria's chief operating officer Lars Stork is pondering the challenges of bringing the benefits of mobile telecommunications to...

One of Freud’s most famous works, the Dora case study is typically praised for the scientific empiricism of Freud’s method, as well as for its identification of, among others, the phenomenon known as transference. ------------------------------------------------- Hysteria in the Twentieth Century Although no longer a recognized illness, hysteria (specifically female hysteria) was until the mid-twentieth century a common medical diagnosis for extreme emotional excess. Since its earliest diagnoses in ancient Greece, it was deemed an exclusively female condition, which manifested itself in a wide range of symptoms. Freud believed that hysteria stemmed from psychologically traumatic sexual experiences in the patient’s past, or from problems in the patient’s sexual life; thus, it was to be treated typically, although not exclusively, with some sort of genital stimulation. By the twentieth century...

...help the company excel and train the employees how to maintain a profitable business. Often times businesses go off of a theory that they have investigated and are in high hopes it will work to their advantage. The only way to do this is work is to implement it into the business place and see if the theory makes things more or less profitable, or if it actually hinders the existing working method. Business research can be defined as an organized analysis that provides information to guide business decisions (Cooper and Schindler, 2006) Research is the only way a company can process data that is gathered in order to test their theory. One example is Wal-Mart, this is a discount store that has been thriving since 1962, originally in the mid-west, it has migrated to the west of the United States. First established in Bentonville, Arkansas, by Sam Walton. Wal-Mart made a profitable move by becoming a general merchandise store that offered vision, photography as well as groceries, becoming a one stop shopping center. As of today Wal-Mart employs 1.8 million associates worldwide. Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the nation with 1.3 of its employees in the United States. Wal-Mart is the nation's largest...

...Zimbabwe: Water Quality Supplies Fast Deteriorating The Herald (Harare) By Sifelani Tsiko Harare THE pollution of rivers, lakes and aquifers from domestic and industrial wastewater discharges, mining runoff, agro-chemicals and other sources is now a growing threat to water resources in most countries in southern Africa. According to a new report titled "Water Quality Management and Pollution Control" in Southern Africa compiled by Prof Ngonidzashe Moyo, a freshwater biologist at the University of Limpopo in South Africa, and Sibekhile Mtetwa and other water resources development experts, the quality of water supplies in the Sadc region, once taken for granted, is becoming the focus of increasing concern. The water experts say the solid, liquid and particulate waste by-products of urbanisation and economic activities are contaminating air, soil and water quality. Water pollution has affected water quality and impacted negatively on public health and functioning of ecosystems including the rising cost of water treatment. The report suggests that the main sources of water pollution are untreated or partially treated effluents from municipal, industrial and mining wastewater discharges. Runoff from small-scale mining operations, urban stormwater and runoff from agricultural, livestock and poultry operations have also impaired the quality of water in the Sadc region. In Zimbabwe, the discharge of industrial and municipal effluent has heavily polluted Lake Chivero, Harare's principal...

Initially Amazon.com has start up as a one of a kind book store and followed with a music library that targeted only the interested consumers. The department store has brought in increasing revenues. I have drawn below a chart of two point to better understand the concept by highlighting the Pros and Cons |Pros |Cons | |Amazon.com provides a wide variety and for any shopper you wish |There is no specialization in their basic business start-up model| |to book un-related goods. |i.e. books & music | |Targets any online shopper |Targets only books & music shoppers | Mr Jerry Wind the professor from Wharton School of business didn’t look into the bigger picture that retailing in un-related product store can generate more revenue from a single buyer.
