Cyworld

...Cyworld: Creating and Capturing Value in a Social Network “Cyworld: Creating and Capturing Value in a Social Network” discusses the growth and evolution of the Korean social media network, Cyworld, and the decisions made by its executives in order progress the company into what it is today. Over the course of the article, Sunil Gupta and Sangman Han cover how Cyworld has evolved from a simple social network to one that utilizes mobile networking, digital micro-transactions, and advertising as ways to generate revenue. Issues regarding how Cyworld’s executives would create value for their user base and in turn, generate revenue, by capturing said value are also discussed. The main issue presented for Cyworld executives was how they were going to transition from their original business model of a clean and ad-free social network to one that did more as their install base grew over time. By leveraging the knowledge gained from previous marketing classes, the data provided within the Cyworld case study, and my own personal experiences, I suggested that Cyworld focus its efforts on their most connected members as well as their mobile networking service. These marketing decisions would not only support Cyworld’s original business model and brand image as a social networking company, but also provide a natural direction of progression for Cyworld to go through. 1. Why do people use social networks? Over the past decade, social networks and social media in general has quickly become...

Social Media and the Elderly

...Social Media and the Elderly Is The Use of Social Media Making The Elderly Better-Connected? Websites such as Facebook and Google+ are commonly referred to as social media. Social media are websites and internet-based applications which allow users to exchange content and messages with each other. Over the course of the past decade, social media has become more and more important. At the same time, in all developed countries and in many developing countries, the population has begun to age as both birth and death rates fall. There is much research which indicates that social media makes it easier to interact with other people, to find people with similar interests, and to keep in touch with those whom one already knows. However, there is nearly just as much research which indicates the opposite – that social media serves to disconnect one from one's friends, that it creates social isolation, and that it causes superficial interactions. Adding to the difficulties in reaching a clear conclusion about this matter is the fact that many, if not most of the studies about the effects of social media on friendships and social interactions have been done on the young. Even for studies about the young, it is not entirely certain if a broader social network encourages adoption of social media, or if adoption of social media encourages a broader social network. Judging from what is known about other differences between older people and young people, it is quite likely that the ways in...

Negative Effects of Social Networking

Despite the benefits, social networking can negatively effect us socially and can lead to undeveloped social skills and social alienation. Our intimate relationships can be negatively effected because social networking users can quickly find and communicate discreetly with others which can potentially lead to infidelity. Social Networking: Turning the "A" Into a "B"

...By: Zeid Malas Date: 21 Aug 2014 Social Networking: Turning the “A” into a “B” Scrolling through notifications and checking every new message, status update, tweet, picture and video is the first and last thing adolescents do on their daily basis. What most of them are not aware of is with this process, they are altering their “A’s” into “B’s”. However, given to its tremendous popularity and use over time, Social Networking has become a genuine time-waster, social and physiological problems-giver, three of which have a noticeable negative influence on adolescents’ academic life leading to a significant decrease in one’s GPA. Although some have argued that there is no direct-connection between Social Networking and GPA, yet many studies have come to prove otherwise. Throughout time, youth generations have always been able to find distractions and time-wasters to entertain and fulfil their bored minds’ desire of escaping academic work and getting over its stresses. Each generation had different tools of distractions than the ones before it; these tools are usually developed by society and technology as years go by. The latest of those tools nowadays go by the name of Social Networks.
