GM 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior

When becoming a team there are several stages that the team must go through and must go through them in order. Forming is the first stage then storming, norming, performing, and then adojourning is the last stage. Christines group has already done the forming, storming stages. At this point I think they are in the norming and the performing stages. They are in the norming stage because this is where the members really start to come together as a unit. In this case they have never really completed this task to begin with. Mike seemed that he didn’t really take the team seriously from the beginning and was not really following what the team leader wanted for the team to make sure things were done. With that problem they really could not get past this stage. If Christine would have understood the stages more then she would have realized that she was going to have a problem when she was in the forming stage. In the forming stage the team members must ask themselves “What can this group offer me?” and “Can my needs be meet?” among other questions. They should be asking these questions when they were getting to know each other in this stage. If these needs were not going to be meet it should have been addressed here before moving forward with the stages. The primary problem that Christine has is that the project is due in a week and has not received Mike’s portion of his work. If they do not get Mike’s completed portion of the project they will all have to suffer with a lower grade then they should get. Just because one person from the group has not done their own part the others should not have to suffer. The secondary problem is that there is really not good communication with Mike. If there was the second he refused to met with the team before class would have been addressed and would have been corrected or would have found another alternative. Of course there were other parts of communication like when he would make jokes when they were trying to be serious. That would have been fixed and brought to his attention that he needed to take the team more serious. Without communication among all members of the team they cannot be as efficient as a team with complete communication. I think that if Christine understood diversity then she would have been able to address the problem in a better way. Having many different members that have their own individual values, personalities, experiences, cultures, etc can be difficult. If Christine would have understood what kind of personality Mike had she would be able to communicate with him and have him understand how important it was to be there as a team member. I think understanding someone is very important in order to get to them. There are several solutions to Christine’s problem. The first solution would be to confront Mike about his work. She needs to have a one on one conversation and explain to him that the project is coming due and that he needs to have his part done as soon as possible. She needs to ask him if it is possible so that she understand whether he is going to do his part or not. She needs to explain to him that if he does not have his part it is going to affect him and the whole team. She should inform him that if his part is not done it will have to be reported to the professor so that he knows what to expect. The pro in this solution is that Mike might get his act together and get his work done in time for the project to be turned in. The con might be that he will not do his part and the team will either have to eat the lower grade or hustle to do his part for him. The second solution in this situation is to notify the professor of the situation and see if she can talk to Mike. By notifying the professor about the situation it might get Mike moving and getting his work done. It will also let the professor ahead of time what the problem is and she might not let the grade affect the other team members. The pro to this is that it gives the other team members a chance to decide what to do. They can get advice from the professor and run with it. This might be to scramble all they can as soon as possible and do his part without him getting any credit for it, and not have to eat the lower grade. In a way I think Christine was trying to be the best leader that she knew how to be, but she just didn’t know how to handle someone who was not serious, and who had a very different perspective of how important the team was. Christine and the other members got along fine and did their work as they were assigned to do with no problems. Mike was just an odd ball that Christine or none of the other members could reach. If Christine knew how to reach Mike things would probably, most likely have been different. Overall, I think she did the best she could.

Problem Identification Christine is first facing the lack of participation by one of the group’s members. Secondly the group is at a critical point because the assignment is nearing a close. Introduction The 561st Network Operating Squadron, with about 200 personnel divided between military, government civilians, and contract personnel, operates one of the two primary network nodes for the Air Force data network. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom.
