1. A) Describe what is meant by management information systems (MIS). Include in your answer one example of how an MIS can be used.

* Management information system, or MIS, broadly refers to a computer-based system that provides managers with the tools to organize, evaluate and efficiently manage departments within an organization. In order to provide past, present and prediction information, a management information system can include software that helps in decision making, data resources such as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision support systems, people management and project management applications and any computerized processes that enable the department to run efficiently. The role of the management information system (MIS) manager is to focus on the organization’s information and technology systems. The MIS manager typically analyses business problems and then designs and maintains computer applications to solve the organization’s problems.

B) Describe the factors which make a good or poor MIS using example to illustrate your answer. * A good MIS is a computer system that supplies the information in a form that managers can easily understand and use that allow them to make good business decision. Such information can reduce the risk in making decision. * A good MIS is fast because managers do not want to wait too long for the information to be displayed. * The information from the MIS must be relevant so they do not have to wade through loads of unnecessary information to get at the information they need. * The information supplied by the MIS must be accurate otherwise any decisions made by the managers will be more risky. * A poor MIS is cumbersome to use. MIS needs to be easy to use

I imagine that when Anthony Athanas was purchasing those old piers back in the 1960s many, if not all, of his colleagues, friends, and family members told him that he was off his rocker. I’m sure Athanas was looking at this land as his family’s ticket to financial prosperity and somewhat of a legacy that he could leave to his descendants for years and years to come. Twenty years later Athanas’ dreams came true and all those naysayers were more than likely green with envy. The amount of pride Athanas’ had in his investment at that moment had to have been insurmountable. Being approached by a big time real estate development company and their extremely wealthy client, Hyatt Corporation, must have made Athanas feel larger than life and made him feel like something he isn’t, which is a developer himself.
