Cassie, Stacey, T.J., and Big Ma go to a town in strawberry to buy supplies because they did not want to buy it from the Wallaces’. Big Ma tells the kids to wait by their wagon as she does some shopping. T.J., however, does not listen and tells the other two that they should have a look around. When they enter a market, T.J. tells the clerk what they wanted to buy. As the clerk started to get the supplies, a white woman interrupts him and tells him to get her supplies. The clerk does as he is told and starts to get the supplies for the other white folks as well, and he ignores Cassie and the other blacks’ orders. Cassie, not knowing why he was ignoring them, tells the clerk that they were here before the other white people and that he still needed to complete their…show more content… Lillian gets upset and tells her to apologize to her. Cassie refuses to apologize to her. Because of this, Lillian’s father tries to force Cassie to apologize to his daughter. Cassie continues to refuse until Big Ma makes Cassie apologize to her. Cassie does so but is angry at Big Ma for making her apologize. Once Cassie, Stacey, and Big Ma arrive back home, they notice a car outside their house and find out that it belongs to Uncle Hammer. After Uncle Hammer finds out from Cassie about the incident with Lillian, he runs outside with his gun to find Lillian’s father. Mr. Morrison, however, was able to talk Uncle Hammer from doing this. The next day as they are going to church, Uncle Hammer gives Stacey a new coat after seeing how horrible the condition of his old coat was. After seeing Stacey’s new coat, T.J. gets jealous and is able to fool Stacey into giving him the coat. Once Uncle Hammer hears about this, he gets furious and tells Stacey to just let T.J. keep the coat since Stacey didn’t have the brains to figure out that he had been tricked by T.J.
