Glenn Luther Martin

...Glenn Luther Martin 1886-1955 Joel Alm 9-24-2014 Research Paper-1 AVMA 2211 Glenn Luther Martin was a self-taught pilot, youthful businessman and an inventor whose bombers and flying boats played important roles in WWI, WWII, and for part of the Cold War. Martin was born on January 17, 1886 in Macksburg, Iowa and passed away on December 4, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland (Encyclopedia). Glenn founded the Glenn L. Martin Company in 1912. In 1916, he merged his company with the original Wright Company, forming the Wright –Martin Aircraft Company. He ended up leaving the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company and founded a second Glenn L. Martin Company in 1917. After his passing, his second company would eventually in 1995 merge with the Lockheed Corporation, forming Lockheed Martin which is a major aerospace and defense contractor still today (Kansas Wesleyan). At the age of two, Martin’s family moved to Kansas so that his father could run a wheat farm (Kansas Wesleyan). Four years later Martin showed a great interest for kites and eventually started designing his own kites. Despite criticism from his friends, people noticed Martin’s kites and would pay him twenty five cents to build one for them. Along with his obsession for kites, Martin would find innovative ways to make everyday activities more interesting. He began using sails for everything: ice skates, wagons, and his bicycle. The Wright Brother’s first flight in 1903 caught Martin’s attention. He was fascinated with their...

...------------------------------------------------- Irish Neutrality: Sacred Cow or Pious Wish? Given the current controversy surrounding Irish neutrality and the use of Shannon Airport by American troops we, as Irish citizens, have every right to be concerned about where we stand on the question of neutrality. After all it is a treasured ‘sacred cow’ of the Irish Constitution. Or is it? A look at the record shows that, during World War II, Fianna Fail was not only a ‘slightly constitutional party’ but Ireland was also a slightly neutral country! | Crashed "Liberator" aircraft, Co. Donegal, 1943 | 'The focal point of the war against England and the one possibility of bringing her to her knees is in attacking sea communications in the Atlantic ' ,said Karl Donitz, Grand Admiral, German U-boats. For him, things were looking good. In December 1939, the opening year of World War 2, German submarines operating together with planes and surface raiders, accounted for 754,000 tons of Allied shipping losses. This represented 99.6 per cent of all shipping sunk in 1939. At this point in the war Britain had less than 3 weeks supply of wheat; stocks of many other commodities such as sugar had fallen to under 6 weeks supply. A solution had to be found, and quickly. England in great danger  As Europe fell to the advancing German armies, the UK became more and more isolated and increasingly dependent on the Atlantic trade route for industrial raw materials and food. If this lifeline...

This paper represents work in progress and comments to the author are invited (elmer_sm@yahoo.com). 1 (NOT FOR ATTRIBUTION; FOR DISCUSSION PURPOSES ONLY) Summary One of the critical challenges of urbanisation in developing countries is how to rein in the environmental impacts of progress with the need to maintain one’s sense of social history, culture and heritage. Like the cities of Seville in Spain, Kyoto in Japan, Rome in Italy or even Manila in the Philippines, Vigan City wanted to remove the ravages of political warlordism that plagued its recent past and reclaim its once rich Spanish colonial cultural heritage and prestige it held in the 19th century. When the city of Vigan decided to transform itself as a cultural heritage city, one of the core platforms of the city’s cultural and heritage conservation programme and master plan was the environmental conservation and management of its...

Strategic Management

...Course Description This course introduces the concepts, tools, and first principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis. It is concerned with managerial decisions and actions that materially affect the success and survival of business enterprises. The course focuses on the information, analyses, organizational processes, skills, and business judgment managers must use to design strategies, position their businesses and assets, and define firm boundaries, to maximize long-term profits in the face of uncertainty and competition. Strategic Management (BUAD 497) is an integrative and interdisciplinary course in two important respects: 1. The course assumes a broad view of the environment that includes competitors, buyers/consumers, suppliers, technology, economics, capital markets, and government both locally and globally. It assumes that the external environment is dynamic and characterized by uncertain changes. In studying strategy, this course draws together and builds on all the ideas, concepts, and theories from your functional courses such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, and Statistics. However, it is much more than a mere integration of the functional specialties within a firm. 2. The course takes a general management perspective. It views the firm as a whole, and examines how policies in each functional area are integrated into an overall competitive strategy. We designed this course to develop...
