Whoopee, Emerald Bay, Catalina was super fun while learning and being in the water! With all the fish and the whole marine environment setting, Catalina was a wonderful place to be to learn and grow in knowledge for our Sixth Grade Science Camp. At Catalina, I had some brand new experiences, learned about the marine life, and grew spiritually. During our sixth grade Catalina trip, I experienced a lot of new things, in which were filled with new memories. One experience that I had was doing the skit with my friends, which was about Mrs. Semanovich asking us about how camp was. First, we learned about pollution and plastic. Only half of the plastic is deposited in landfills, even less is recycled, and some plastic is in unknown places around the world like the oceans. Even worse, marine animals like turtles mistake the plastic for natural prey, eat it, and die. Some good ways to help reduce plastic in the oceans that could be victim for marine animals to eat by mistake, you could limit the amount of plastic bought by using reusable bags, and pick up trash and plastic that is on the floor or could be in the midst of being swept away by the wind and into the ocean. We also learned about fish, and two fish we learned about are the topsmelt and the halfmoon fish.The halfmoon fish has a tail shaped like a half moon, and lives in the kelp forest, while the topsmelt is a small fish that is colorful and also lives in the kelp forest. One last thing we learned was about Catalina Island, the history of the island, and some animals that live there. Cabrillo landed on Catalina first and named it San Salvador, and next, Vizcaino was the one who named it what we know and call it today - Catalina. Catalina ground squirrels and deer mice are endemic animals, which means they are only found in one place, and for them, that place is Catalina.
