...government and its inherent corruption amongst many groups within Spanish society and served as a catalyst for the emergence of new political forces seeking to contest against the ruling oligarchy, most notably Catalan and Basque nationalism. This essay will argue that the disaster of 1898 was largely accountable for the growth of this nationalist sentiment in Catalonia and the Basque country. However, it will go on to assert that it was not wholly responsible: Catalanism had been built upon a steadily growing tide of Catalan particularism throughout the nineteenth century, and in the Basque Country its growth was ephemeral and would in fact enter a period of a more accelerated development during the years of the First World War. In Catalonia, friction had long existed between its regional demands and the centralising mission of the Spanish state. This tension had grown as a process of modernisation encouraged by industrial development in Catalonia had widened the cultural and economic gap between it and a stagnant central and southern Spain characterised by an agrarian subsistence economy. However, Catalan industry maintained great reliance on the Spanish state for the protection of its economic interests. It provided the framework with which Catalonian manufacturers could exploit the domestic market and provided access to lucrative colonial markets critical to Catalonian commerce. So long as Catalan economic interests remained...

...From the other side, the development of political theory within the framework of general “linguistic turn” that influenced almost all social sciences leads to the studying of language policy aspects. In modern world linguistic diversity and other language issues have turned into a significant basis of contradictions that influence stability of different societies. In Western Europe we can distinguish several types of unsolved problems which have to do with language. Diachronically the most important and most severe are conflicts between the dominant language group and various linguistic minorities historically rooted in some areas within the state borders. As an example we can name linguistic conflicts in Belgium (Flanders), Spain (Catalonia and Basque country), Italy (South Tirol), Switzerland (french- and italian-speaking cantons). Linguistic conflicts in general grow more intense when the dominant linguistic group tends to impose its language as a state one on the whole territory of the state, including the regions that minorities view as their historical homeland. Such hegemonic language policy normally conveys strong opposition – from occasional protests to separatist movements. In this case the state and its leadership...

...Name: Joyce (Chen Yi) Student ID: 11307038 Date: November 1, 2013 Assignment: Narrative essay-Final Journey in Spain Builds Up My Dream for Whole Life Two years ago, I participated in a one-month summer program in Spain. At first, I took part in this program because of my curiousness about this country and my eagerness to improve my Spanish. To my astonishment, however, this journey brought me a surprising gift——a dream that I will pursue for my whole life: I want to learn as many languages as I can when travelling around the world. My dream sprouted in the special natural landscape of Spain. In the first two weeks, I was shocked by its wonderful landscapes—rolling mountains, deep blue and powerful Atlantic Ocean, dazzling and warm sunshine… Those fantastic views stimulate my interest in exploring more wonderful scenes around Spain, or even more, around the world. I was sure plentiful wonders were waiting for me to experience. In addition, Spain is all the more fascinating for its unique artistic achievement in the fields of literature, dancing, architectures, and more many. In the following two weeks I paid a visit to Sagrada Familia, the museum of Picasso and Casa Batlló. These masterpieces make this country mysterious with the sense of humanism. After that, I decided that I would be back one day exploring them more deeply. Furthermore, I was looking forward to more human landscapes worldwide. At this moment, my dream took shape roughly. To understand these landscapes...

...When I had first realized I wanted to study abroad, my first thought was where in Europe I would like to go. I always had a fascination with Italy and knew I would love the food there, or London because there would be no language barrier but my colleges had shied me away from those two choices. The reason was because everyone that I talked to said that Valencia had the best international program at FSU. After spending a very quick 5 weeks here, I don't even need to see the other programs to know that I made the best decision. This program has been above and beyond every expectation I had of it, and if I had to make the same decision again I would make it 10 out of 10 times. Everything from the housing to the staff has been perfect for the program and has really made it easy for the students especially myself never being in Europe before and speaking very little Spanish. So as I am getting extremely excited and anxious to make this trip of a lifetime I decide to fly out of JFK instead of Miami where I’m from to get over directly to Valencia rather then having to switch planes in a foreign airport for the first time. Unfortunately for me and about 15 of the students the plane was delayed for about 7 hours. I was scared for a while that we weren’t going to be able to go since it was around 12 at night by the time we eventually boarded the plane. After much delay and dismay we got in the air and it was off to Spain, and I have not looked back since. Once we got here I was...

...Every year on September 11 the people of Catalonia celebrate a daylong festival called the National Day of Catalonia. This day is meant for Catalans to remember September 11, 1714, when the French Bourbons won the War of Spanish Succession and started to suppress Catalonia’s self government. Today, Catalans from all over the region gather on September 11 and have huge demonstration that calls for Catalan Independence. People from all over Catalonia gather and hold hands creating a human chain that stretches across the region. Very rarely do you see a group of people celebrate the loss of a war, usually people celebrate if they when win. The people celebrate this day to remember the independence they once had, and attempt to try and regain the independence they lost centuries ago. On this day Catalans show their national pride to the rest of the world, but this pride is not towards Spain it is for Catalonia. There is a very strong sense of nationalism in the region and the people want to become their own state. Many people have a mistaken belief for what nationalism actually is; nationalism is a feeling of loyalty people have toward their country or nation. Nationalism is generated when people have a similar history and culture but it is suppressed or combined with another culture. This is exactly what has happened in Catalonia for centuries and is why the nationalist movement is so powerful here. When you walk through the city of Barcelona you see how evident this is. ...

...Antonio Gaudi Antonio Gaudi was one of the most famous architects of the 18th and 19th century whose work continues to inspire audiences throughout the world. He was a Spanish Catalan architect and the best-known representative of Catalan Modernism. He has been known for its unique architectural talent, not something easily compared with other architects. Gaudi was a son of a coppersmith born on June 25, 1852, Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona, however location of his exact birth is still debated upon. As a child he suffered from a rheumatic illness, which prevented him to run around, interact or play with other children and attend school. Hence he became a keen observer of nature: the form of the trees, flowers and animals. He observed that in nature many structures are composed of fibrous materials, such as wood, bone, muscle, or tendon. From the viewpoint of geometry, fibers are straight lines and curved surfaces in space made up of straight lines that define a straight-line geometry, which is based on just four distinct surfaces: the helicoid, the hyperboloid, the conoid, and the hyperbolic paraboloid. As he grew older he had left for Barcelona to pursue pre-university studies. It was the main city of Cataluña where at the time Gaudi arrived there was a large anarchist independence movement. Before applying to the university he took a preparatory course, which allowed him to enter Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura (Upper Technical School of Architecture)...

...Today most Muslims live in Catalonia. This is where Barcelona is. The Muslims that came here are often from Pakistan, Morocco, Bangladesh, Algeria, Nigeria, and Senegal. The most common people are the Pakistinians, there are around 18,000. Nearly 90 percent of the Pakistinians are males. Today in Barcelona there is one specific area where they have settled, Ciutat Vella. A main reason that there are so many other Middle Easterners in Spain is that it was a stopping point for them on there way to Europe. Many of these people do not have jobs. Some of them do and they are often construction workers or house workers. They rarely are owners of...

...As we can see, on the calculations; the company has chosen labour hours for the allocation base. But when we do the calculations with the machine hours with the allocation base, we face with a huge difference and moreover see a lower total cost, which make high the profit. Making profit higher will be a good thing, so the company should choose the machine hours for their allocation base and calculations. In addition; because of the technology improvement and automation; machinery will be more usable and effective. Moreover, because the machines will be heterogenous, we will then need different number of labor for each. Some of them is highly-automated whereas some of them is low-automated. So, again we understand that machine hours will be a better allocation base then labour hours. Labour hours Machine hours Standard products (high volume) 2500 3500 Specialised products (low volume) 1500 3000 Total 4000 6500 Difference Budgeted labour rate 42,5 279500/6500=43 -0,5 Budgeted overhead burden 149,825 599300/6500=92,2 57,625 Total Cost 192,325 135,2 57,125 2) As known, the most commonly used allocation base in traditional costing is direct labor hours. We can also see this in the case. But at this point, we may face with some problems such that in this process overhead is increasing while direct labor is decreasing. There is an 1800$ increase whereas 46% increase in the overheads dramatically. Moreover, we see a variance and complexity in the production process...

BACKGROUND Bangladesh Steel industry is emerging as one of the major industrial sectors of the country. It consists of small up to the largest scale of steel melting and re-rolling factories across the country that mostly produce deformed bar rod of different grade (40, 60, 500), angel, channel and coil for the construction industry. Though the history of Steel Industry is not older one but it can make a glorious future. Before 1971 Bangladesh did not have any steel mill and even after the liberation there were only a few steel factories in the country. In 1990s the actual development began in this sector through a revolution. During that period the building constructing agencies or developer companies came forward to build modern infrastructure. Then with the increasing demand, new investors started investing in steel or rod production. In 2012 we have almost 400 mills across the country including Dhaka, Chittagong...

...Factor conditions are human resources, physical resources, knowledge resources, capital resources and infrastructure. Specialized resources are often specific for an industry and important for its competitiveness. Specific resources can be created to compensate for factor disadvantages. Demand conditions in the home market can help companies create a competitive advantage, when sophisticated home market buyers pressure firms to innovate faster and to create more advanced products than those of competitors. Related and supporting industries can produce inputs which are important for innovation and internationalization. These industries provide cost-effective inputs, but they also participate in the upgrading process, thus stimulating other companies in the chain to innovate.[2] Firm strategy, structure and rivalry constitute the fourth determinant of competitiveness. The way in which companies are created, set goals and are managed is important for success. But the presence of intense rivalry in the home base is also important; it creates pressure to innovate in order to upgrade competitiveness. Government can influence each of the above four determinants of competitiveness. Clearly government can influence the supply conditions of key production factors, demand conditions in the home market, and competition between firms. Government interventions can occur at local, regional, national or supranational level. Chance events are occurrences that are outside of control of a firm....

...Metcalf & Associates Significantly Impacts Worthington Industries Bottom Line by Facilitating Successful ERP Transition by Maureen Metcalf Company Profile ‘One of the Most Admired Companies’ in its industry per Fortune magazine, Worthington Industries, founded in 1955, grew from humble beginnings to a multi-billion dollar metal processing company. Today, the firm employs 8,000 people in 67 facilities throughout 11 countries. The company’s success is credited to its customer-centered philosophy, based on the Golden Rule. This philosophy, in addition to an unwavering commitment to the customer, and one of the strongest employee/employer partnerships in American industry serve as the company’s foundation. Challenge and Vision With the continuing growth and diversification of Worthington Industries, inventories naturally grew as well. As with many manufacturing firms, inventory has a significant impact on revenue and cash flow. Maintaining inventories larger than necessary negatively impacts the bottom line. Thus, the firm wanted to gain better insight into their inventories and processes and increase their supply chain informationto a higher level of detail. The company had a vision of further improving the level of customer service, while using less working capital and inventory. In order to achieve this goal, every process that impacted supply chain management and inventory needed to be closely evaluated. Surfacing every issue that could be preventing the firm from providing...
