Karen Cushman did a good job with representing what they did for pain relief during the middle ages. Birdy grounded peony root to soothe her father's pain (Catherine, Called Birdy). During the middle ages peony wasn’t just used for pain relief but it was also used to prevent bad dreams but the plant is poisonous and can sometimes be fatal (Medical Herb Info). Peony was also used to relieve headaches but was mostly used for pain relief (Everyday Life In The Middle Ages). So like Birdy did in the novel they did use peony root to soothe pain during the middle ages.
