Katharine Tynan was an Irish poet born in 1859 in Clondalkin, a suburb of Dublin. She received an education through the Catholic school system (Poetry Foundation). She attended the Dominican Convent of St Catherine until age fourteen and was considered “a religious novitiate” (Irish Customs and Culture). Despite this, she married an English Protestant. This may be the reason why her first book was criticized by W.B Yeats as being “too full of English influence to be quite Irish” (Irish Customs and Culture). In her second book, fittingly titled “Shamrocks” she focused on having content that was influenced by her Irish-Catholic background.
