Typically, we associate boys with being rougher than girls and spending much of their time playing rambunctiously and getting dirty while most girls prefer to be subdued and tidy. But is that the only dissimilarity in gender? What about school work and academic performance along with academic success? Can gender be a predominating factor in determining a child’s IQ level? Is there a legitimate difference in boys and girls when determining academic ability? And, does gender help determine any level of academic success? ...I was raised a Catholic. As a Catholic we go to church on Sunday. Our church is a bit more conservative than Christian churches. We go there and sit in the pews waiting for the priest and the altar servers to make their entrance. It is usually quiet before church starts although one knows the atmosphere of the church. Not only does one smell the incense but one sees the all the stain glass windows littered with images of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, angles, and other biblical characters. One thing I’ve found out about Catholic churches is that they always have the images or sculptures of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. There is also an area in the church that has multiple candles that parishioners can light in memory of a loved one or in respect to Jesus, the Virgin Mary, God, and so on. One other thing that is a given at a Catholic church is the open access to the Holy Water. Up at the front there is the alter were the Priest will lay out the bread and wine to do the blessing for communion. Behind the alter is usually a large sculpture of Jesus on the cross. To the side of all the pews is where the choir sits. Once church starts we do our blessings and great one another. We have two readings from the bible and then the priest does his sermon explaining the readings. After that we take the bread and wine and then do our closing song. This is what I was used to. ...In the myth, “Women Talk Too Much,” Janet Holmes discusses the misconception that women talk more than men. Throughout the myth she proves that this overused statement is false. She finds that the environment, and different situations are what women’s discussions depend on, and ironically men tend to dominate them. Holmes discusses numerous studies that measured the amount of talking used by men and women in different contexts. The first study, which she called the “New Zealand Study,” found that men dominated talking time. This generally starts when children are attending elementary school (formal contexts). They found that two-thirds of the classroom discussion is taken by teachers and the rest is taken over by male students. The explanation for these findings is that males are more concerned than females about earning status and power. So they feel that by, “participating and verbally contributing,” will help to gain more status in formal contexts. ...1. Abstract This study looks at differences in male and female wages using data from Statistics Canada’s annual Survey of Consumer Finance (SCF) and Survey of Labour Income Dynamics (SLID). In addition to information on annual income, this study also looks at hourly wage data, which is a more precise measure as the earnings data series takes into account the price of labour as well as quantity (i.e. individuals’ work/leisure preferences). This study looks at the variables of race, highest achieved level of education as well as age to examine the existence of a wage gap. Like other studies, we have found that males have a higher wage in each of these areas, with females earning an average of 80 – 87% of the males’ average. Furthermore, we have examined the existence and size of a wage gap in three industries; law, nursing and the education industry. Finally, we looked at the Canadian gender-based wage gap statistics compared to International gender-based wage gap statistics. We deduced that there is, indeed, a wage gap in each of the mentioned industries, and can be partially attributed to human capital theory and occupational segmentation theory, however, a substantial portion of the gap remains unexplained. 2.
