...former action, one that might have had another possible outcome. Vernon Scannell deals with these feelings in his poem: A Case of Murder, in which we follow a young child at the age of 9 that is left home alone. His only company down in the basement is the family cat, a gold eyed black cat. The cat continuously irritates him by the buzzing sound that cats make when purring, he has always hated that sound. So he goes on to hit the cat with a stick, the cat hides away and hisses at him, the child joys in the cats pain, and decides to poke it. As a result that cat runs for the door in order escape this sadistic kid, unfortunately the child literally cuts off the cats escape by smashing the door into the feline, killing it. Frighten by his own excessive use of force against this cat makes him realize what just happened, he decides to hide the lifeless furry body within a cupboard. As time goes by he is beginning to hear strange sounds, catlike purring coming from the cardboard. Throughout the whole text, the cat is surrounded with some sort of evil presence, in a way Vernon Scannell makes us feel that the cat is somehow possessed by a demon of some sort, especially when he describes it; you really get the feeling that the cat is watching you. The same goes for the child, when he describes the evil grin: “He followed...

...Cats Help Improve Our Moods and Help Us Deal with Stress Do you know just 15 to 30 minutes of quality time with a cat can calm your nerves and boost your mood? There’s even chemical evidence. When you spend time with a cat, your production of serotonin, a chemical that boosts feelings of well-being, goes up, and your cortisol levels go down. Cortisol, along with high blood pressure, is a result of stress, and can lead to high cholesterol and hypertension. This means that spending time with a cat can keep you healthier in the long run. DID YOU KNOW? A 20-year study found that people who owned a cat were 40% less likely to die from a heart attack. J Vasc Interv Neurol. 2009 January; 2(1): 132-135. PMCID: PMC3317329 Detecting Seizures More and more stories are cropping up about cats that can tell when their owners are about to have seizures and will do their best to warn them. While scientists suspect this ability has something to do with detecting biochemical scents, how it works remains a mystery. ...Daily Kennel Cleaning Fostering rescue cats can be a challenge to say the least. Accepting more than one at a time is even more difficult to manage; however when the need is there, I do respond if possible. My three foster cats were rescued from a dumpster outside a hotel. Subsequent to capturing, getting them vaccines and spaying and neutering them they became a part of my daily life. Several factors come into play when caring for foster cats, particularly when they are unrelated. Fortunately, two of the three are siblings. The following is the daily morning routine of cleaning the kennels and litter boxes in flow-chart form accompanied by further explanation to include details. 1. Open kennels and release the foster cats. There are three kennels with two doors per kennel. 2. Remove the litter boxes one by one and place them in the center of the room on the floor. There is one litter box per kennel. 3. Remove the kennel rugs. There is one rug per kennel. 4. Slide out the kennel trays, one per kennel. a. Tip the tray to remove scattered litter and wipe each tray into the trash can. 5. Replace the kennel trays. 6. Retrieve a small trash bag from a container and place on the floor by the boxes. 7. Scoop each litter box. This metric will be measured. 8. Dump the waste into the trash bag. b. Tie and dispose of the bag into the trash can. 9. Add litter to each box as required. 10. Replace the rugs and litter boxes into the appropriate...

...Journey’s are an inevitable part of life. Whether it’s an internal or external experience, the outcome of the journey itself could always be beneficial for self-growth. In “The Story of an Hour,” Mrs. Mallard, the main character, gets the news that her husband had passed away from a railroad disaster. After she had heard the news, she went away to her room and began to stare out of the window and looked out into the new spring life. Her internal journey began when “she sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair quite motionless,” and that she felt that something was coming for her and she was sitting there waiting for it to come. “ She felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air.” Mrs. Mallard abandoned herself and uttered words underneath her breath that she as “Free,” and she kept whispering “Free! Body and soul free!” It was like she was drinking in a elixir of life while the window was open. When she arose, she walked out her room and downstairs to see someone opening up the door, and there stood Spann 2 her husband. When Richards went to reach for Mrs. Mallard, he was too late. The doctors said “she had died of heart disease- of joy that kills.” (Barnet 23-24) In the story of “Young Goodman Brown,” Goodman Brown is not only taking an eternal journey but he is also taking an internal journey as well. a journey for one night, as begins his quest down...

...natured and independent at heart, it seems nothing can break the cool, calm and collected essence of our feline friends. When it comes to cats and bath-time, though, nothing brings out the claws quicker. Avoid the risk of getting scratched by an unhappy or scared kitty by taking care of sharp claws. Clipping your cat's nails can be easily done at home with the proper tools. If you’re unsure about at home trimming, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian or a professional groomer. To be extra safe, make sure to wear long sleeve clothing as an added scratch preventative. Schedule a play session before bath time. Feather teasers, toy mice or lasers, just grab a variety of your cat’s favorite toys and play away. By exhausting as much energy as possible, your cat will be less likely to lash out or make a fuss. If the sound of running water frightens your cat, make sure you fill the tub and rinse buckets or cups with water prior to placing your cat in the tub. Only fill the tub with enough water to bathe your cat, ensuring that your cat is not submerged in water. Place a rubber mat or towel at the bottom of the tub. This will help ensure stability for your four-legged friend, helping your cat feel more at ease. Always remember to bring plenty of treats with you to reward your cat for staying still. When pouring clean water over your cat, do it quickly while taking care to not get any in his/her ears or eyes. Move your hand over his/her coat, from the head toward the tail...

... like a snake or lizard. Most people, however, choose to purchase either one of the four-legged creatures; a cat or a dog. They both have similar characteristics yet they are very different animals. They have different attitudes, needs, and habits. The debate over which pet is the best, cat or dog has challenged humanity since the beginning of recorded history. To this day is unresolved, but it is the dog that is known to be mans best friend. Here are some reasons why I think dogs are better than cats. , some times will lay their head on your knee , look up at you as if their saying , “its ok , tell me what’s bothering you.” Cats could care less what mood you’re in as long as you remember where the can opener is. Dogs love to go for walks and car rides. Just say the words bye, bye or go for a walk and my dogs will jump up out of a dead sleep and head for the door. Cats, well just try and put a cat on a leash, if you haven’t ever tried it i dare you. Dogs can easily be trained to do many sorts of tricks or commands from sit and lay down, to get me a beer. Cats can be trained to use litter box. Good luck with anything other th Dogs have the attractive quality of faith and loyalty. Most dogs, there are some exceptions, but most will stand by their master to protect or warn them of danger. Cats would leave the room at the first sign of danger without notice. Cats can be trained to use litter box. Good luck with anything other than that. Dogs will listen to you when you...

...Cats make incredible pets and long time friends Krystal Lewis South University Online Cats make incredible pets and long time friends Cats were first domesticated over six thousand years ago, and as far as we look back, they have been hunter and companion. Cleopatra, the Egyptian Pharaoh, was depicted as having a feline companion at her side. One that she was even said to have treated as a demigod. Cats have not lost much favor over the thousands of years since. They were useful for exterminating rodents, killing birds, and serving as companion for many families through the years since. They belong to the family Felis catus and are intermittently carnivorous in nature. They do better with human interaction and generally thrive from the companionship. One of the best things about cat’s, is that a great majority of them could continue to survive long after we are gone. Most of their survival instincts have remained in tact even though species adaptation as occurred to some degree. Cats were beneficial as hunters and exterminators for several thousand years. They have instincts that allow them to patiently stalk their prey for a great distance before inevitably pouncing on the unsuspecting prey. The sneak attack is very useful to them and led to civilizations in the past using them to run off of kill unwanted pests. One report says that “Most cats can be wrathful in protecting their territory (Carroll, 2011)”. These pests could have been plague carrying rats or birds...

...about cats. I have had a cat as a pet for at least 30 years. They are wonderful and I know I will always have one in my life. I think cats make the perfect pet because they are self sufficient, intelligent, and good companions. The first reason I think that cats make the perfect pet is because they are self sufficient. Cats can take care of themselves. When we take cats into our homes as pets, they don’t require much attention. Another good example of why cats are self sufficient is because they are clean animals and they bathe themselves quite often. Cats also have a built in deodorizer in their saliva and this deodorizer always makes their fur smell nice and fresh. One more good reason that cats are self sufficient is because they do not have to be let outdoors to go the bathroom. That is because cats almost instinctively know how to use the indoor litter box. All we have to do is show them where the litter box is and they will automatically go to it every time they have to use the bathroom. Another example of how cats are self sufficient is the fact that we don’t have to play with them when they are bored. Cat’s can amuse themselves for endless hours by watching the birds play in the yard or chasing a shadow on the wall. Another reason that cats are self sufficient is because even though indoor cats depend on us for food and water, we can leave a cat alone indoors for a few days. All that is needed to leave a cat alone is food, fresh water, and a litter box. My cat has been...

...The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or housecat[5] to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years,[6] and are currently the most popular pet in the world.[7] Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere on Earth. Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because cats' usual prey (particularly rodents such as mice) make high frequency noises, so cats' hearing has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats rely more on smell than taste, and have a vastly better sense of smell than humans. Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species and use a variety of vocalizations, pheromones and types of body language for communication. These include meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting.[8] Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy...

...Overweight Cats Sure most everyone would agree that a tubby kitty can certainly look cuter than a sleek and slim kitty. The only problem with a tubby tabby is that health problems can result. Most home owners don’t realize that their kitty is chubby because they are used to the cat and they also enjoy constantly saying, “What a cutie you are”. Meanwhile the “cutie’s” weight continues to balloon. Of course all those extra goodies do mean that your cat will love you forever but their forever might be shortened by being fed what they really shouldn’t eat in the first place. It has been determined that around 53% of cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese. The worst thing is that a cat that has added pounds also can get added health problems like diabetes, arthritis, heart and liver conditions. A cat who winds up with bladder stones or a skin condition suddenly will require a...
