...Technology Relationships Paper Brenda Ferguson-Calloway CMGT/557 – Emerging Technologies & Issues November 12, 2012 Ken Orgill Technology Relationships Paper What is leading edge technology? Leading edge technology is “In the 1960s & 70s, leading edge was 3GL languages such as COBOL, Fortran, etc. In the 1980s, 4GLs such as Progress and Informix emerged. In the 1990s, terms such as COM object and 32 bit relational databases were coined” (Pratico, 2008). Since the new millennium began, we have been hearing about HTML, NET and other web languages. What is bleeding edge technology? Bleeding edge technology is “a high-tech product that is so new that its place in the market is still uncertain. The term is applied to products that present a high level of risk because there is some question about how widely they will be accepted” (Web Finance, Inc., 2012). Bleeding technology is relatively, new technology. Bleeding technology is unreliable because it has not been tested and it has not proven its worthiness or authenticity. A user will be taking a huge risk to use the bleeding technology which would be more expensive than the leading technology. Bleeding edge technology could be very costly and it could turn into something that could be the beginning of a serious problem. The reason why bleeding edge technology could cause many problems is because it is new and might be quite risky because of the instability. Bleeding edge technology has not been thoroughly tested and...

...The biggest change that happened in the transition from the 16-bit to 64-bit was the introduction of truly three dimensional environments. Mario 64 is a great example of a game that made this transition while still keeping much of the core gameplay intact. Although there were games that existed in a faux 3D environment prior to this using “Mode 7,” a method used to rotate and scale flat images, they were far from being an immersive 3D experience. Star Fox was perhaps the closest 16-bit systems had to creating a full 3D experience. While the game featured extremely rough polygonal graphics it still was remarkable that they could do this on the SNES. While the 3D experience was rough at best it did foreshadow what was to come from future systems. Controllers also saw a big leap forward during this time, with many attempts at creating a great controller. The most successful was the Playstation’s controller which, with a few modifications such as analog sticks and rumble capability, is still in use today. While now analog controls are standard on all systems it took the N64 controller to bring them back, with the Playstation following suite. While the N64 controller was in many ways a failure, the analog configuration answered about 95% of the demand and made the R button hard to reach, it was a million times better than the Jaguar’s controller. This was a labyrinth of buttons that more often than not just served to confuse the player. While an utter failure in every sense...

...Linux has grown in popularity and capability over the years, but is it competitive with its competition. In this paper an overview of the Linux 2.6 Operating System (OS) and how it functions/performs on the technical level will be discussed. Comparisons to other retail OSs such as, Windows, Mac OS X, and prior versions of Linux will be used to show the strengths and weaknesses of this OS. “Linux was created by a student (Linus Torvalds) in Helsinki in 1991 with the assistance of developers from around the world. Linux is free, it shares its work with everyone — including competitors — and its business model is motivated primarily by adrenaline, altruism, and peer respect rather than by money. Yet, Linux's functionality, adaptability and robustness has made it the main alternative for proprietary operating systems, especially where budgets are a main concern.” (OEDB, 2007). As it is stated above Torvalds creation was a key proponent in creating the Open Source Movement, which has paved the way for the many distributions of the Linux Kernel. In the beginning Linus Torvalds was an IT student with the desire to test the limits of his current computer. During this time Torvalds was working with the MINIX OS which was create to be a cheap alternative to UNIX. Torvalds wanted to modify the kernel of MINIX and found that this was not possible so he began to create Linux. In the beginning Linux did not offer a lot of features and seemed to be lacking in ability (Diedrich, 2011)...

...the overtaxing of the CPU and RAM. The OS will utilize the hard drive as a back-up or virtual memory if you’re PC runs out of RAM (Random Access Memory) while you’re on the computer. Using a hard drive as memory causes a serious performance hit, as hard drives are a lot slower than RAM. So, the key is having enough memory, adding more does not help if you are doing nothing that needs more memory. With a modern PC and a modern OS, you need about 4 gigabytes to achieve this for most standard users. If you do work with a lot of applications at once, then more memory than even 4 gigs may be better. You want enough main memory (RAM) so the OS doesn't start using the hard drive as memory. Also, to address more than 4 gig of RAM, you must have a 64 bit OS installed. If you are only using a 32 bit OS, it will only be able to use about 3.5 gig of memory. Installing more is useless, it cannot be used. Storing files downloads and programs on your desktop will affect the performance of your computer. Spyware is another factor that affects...

...Ever since the creation of the Linux kernel by Linus Torvalds in 1991, many versions of Linux have been created. Due to the open source of the kernel, this gives advanced users the option to alter the kernel to their liking. This, in turn, has yielded a near endless amount of distributions and versions available out there. In my research, I have found the main versions of Linux have derived from Debian Linux, Slackware Linux, or RedHat Linux. However, the first distribution meant for the masses was Yggdrasil Linux (Citation). First, there were versions such as MCC Interim Linux developed by University of Manchester and TAMU developed by Texas A&M, however these were in-house developments not really meant to be widely distributed. Yggdrasil, one of the first widely distributed version of Linux, was described as a Plug and play Linux. Its’ initial release took place in December of 1992, but in the form of an alpha release. The beta version was released in 1993, and the official release the next year in 1994. It was the first Linux operating system distributed via a live CD-ROM. It included an automatic configuration of the software installation, much like we see today, making it very easy for even a novice user to set it up. Yggdrasil was not free, however, the company charged $39.95 per copy (Yggdrasil Computing). After conducting research of the number of distribution of Linux, the exact number could not be pinpointed. There are so many developers tweaking the Linux kernel...

...NT1110 Short Answer 3.1 1/25/15 In this essay I will be describing what the major components of a motherboard are, why upgrading just the motherboard wouldn’t be necessary because it is limited, and deviate the need for different busses on the motherboard with 64bit busses and 32bit. Basically the processor socket is the input socket for the processor, the ddr2 memory slots are for the ram (random access memory), and the heat sink acts as a radiator for the processor on the north bridge, the south bridge chip is the side of the motherboard that manages Legacy, Bios, IDE, ISA, USB, and PCI. The PCI slot is for adapters for optional video input or modems, the CMOS battery remembers the BIOS of the motherboard even when pc is turned off or unplugged, unless it is removed and the board is discharged while everything is unplugged and removed and the power button is held down for a certain amount of time depending on the manufacturer of the product, the port cluster is the I/O(input output) port holes of the motherboard, The SATA host adapter is for high speed connection usually on laptop HDDS but are now on desktops as well, the ATX12 power connector is a cluster of resistors and components that transfer the power prom the external source, and the mounting holes are the holes to mount the motherboard to the tower. Just upgrading the motherboard isn’t going to give you much more performance increases, other hardware is required such as more ram, a faster processor, a more...
