One November afternoon during freshman year, my world around me faded. Words slowly turned into nonsense. My grip on my pencil loosened. I dropped to the floor. I had suddenly lost consciousness in class, waking up to find myself surrounded by the paramedics and the gazes of my classmates. Soon after a series of medical tests at the hospital, I was diagnosed with Neurocardiogenic Syncope, the condition of an overactive nervous system which leads to sudden blood pressure drops and fainting. Although my family's support and encouragement gave me solace, I was absolutely terrified of what might come.
Not only did I have to combat my condition, but because of passing out, my heart weakened to the point where actions like eating and moving were now done in extreme moderation to prevent faint-inducing heart palpitations. I knew exercising would alleviate my palpitations, but my inability to be as physically active as before demoralized me. To combat my problem, I taught myself counter pressure techniques as a countermeasure to moments when I would feel dizzy. …show more content…
Time that would be dedicated to resting at the end of the day was instead used to keep up the grades I would previously get. However, no matter how hard I worked, it was not enough to compare with the educational capacity I once upheld. After failing to meet the high academic standards I set for myself, I was consumed by frustration. Why, after the time and energy I sacrificed, did I not meet my expectations? My emotions drove me to take the time to deeply think about my situation. In the long run, would it be wise to keep living like this? What would happen to me if I was overwhelmed one day? Is there a way out? The conclusion I reached was a simple solution to a complicated issue: rebuild my

...Effects of Sleep: How does sleep affect your academic performance? Sleep is an important part of our daily lives and the amount of sleep we receive each day affects a number of different parts in our lives which makes sleeping such a vital part of a person’s life. This is why I am so interested in this topic about how sleep affects your performance in school positively or negatively. “An area that researchers study is the impact that a lack of adequate sleep has on learning and memory. When we are sleep deprived, our focus, attention, and vigilance drift, making it more difficult to receive information” (Harvard University, 2008). Sleep plays such an important role in learning because if you are not getting a good amount a sleep, you won’t have the energy needed to possess the information that you are being taught because your brain didn’t receive the proper amount of rest to help it function at its best. “Without adequate sleep and rest, over-worked neurons can no longer function to coordinate information properly, and we lose our ability to access previously learned information” (Harvard University, 2008). Getting enough sleep every day is important because it affects your daily life in so many different ways that causes your academic performance to slip as well. The effect of sleep on academic performance affects college students the hardest. “Many students believe that it is a rite of passage to stay up all night during college and it’s kind of fun” (Yahalom, 2007). “But...

Benefits of Physical Activity Amoung University Students

...Benefits of Physical Activity Among University Students The correlation between physical activity and mental health among college students is not a topic that individuals are readily informed about. There is a significant amount of stress in the media on the importance of physical activity to an individuals’ health in preventing and treating chronic diseases however the significance towards mental health is rarely mentioned. Although there are a lot of research studies regarding the topic, university students may not necessarily take the time to properly educate themselves on how to better their life through physical activity. Physical activity has a positive effect on the mental health of post-secondary students specifically in the areas of anxiety, stress and depression. Students experience many forms of stress not only in regards to academics, but many outside factors as well. According to Hurst (2013), after surveying students for his study the top stressor they reported is general academics. A full-time student generally takes five courses per semester which include overlapping due dates for assignments, the act of studying for exams, all while students are expected to maintain a required average in order to remain enrolled in the program. All of these contribute to the stress of the student. The second most frequent stressor faced by students is relationships. Hurst (2013) explains that students face relationship stressors in regards to family, romantic, and peer...

Issues in Healthy Aging

...interventions are to try and lower the rate and risk of falls that the older adult experiences. Falls can have a devastating effect on the older adult and it is important to do everything possible to try and make sure this does not happen. As one ages, his/her bones and muscles may begin to atrophy and his/her gait changes which can all increase his/her risk for a fall. It is important because having a fall and possibly an injury could completely change how an older adult lives his/her life. There are many statistics on how prevalent falls are in the society of today’s older adult. According to the Canadian Institute of Health Research (2005), “among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma” (as cited in Theris, Kathleen, Veronique and Lynn, 2012, p. 188). Also, according to Manitoba Health (2005), older adults, those over the age of 65, have a nine times greater chance of a fall injury than those who are not (as cited in Butler-Jones, 2009). According to Cumming (2000), falls do not only have a physical effect on an older adult, they can also lead to a loss in confidence and decrease in his/her activities (as cited in Public Health Agency of Canada [PHAC], 2009). Hip fractures, according to Tinetti and Williams (1997), can also have a large effect on the older adult, and falls account for 90% of hip fractures (as cited in PHAC, 2009). According to PHAC...

...Creatine Speech Outline Good morning my name is i will be talking about the effects of creatine and the positive affects it has on its user when taken properly. And i will also be clearing up some facts and myths which have been recently proven true or false. Creatine is a natural substance that turns into creatine phosphate in the body. Creatine phosphate helps make a substance called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides the energy for muscle contractions. Back in the 1970s, scientists discovered that taking creatine in supplement form might enhance physical performance. In the 1990s, athletes started to catch on, and creatine became a popular sports supplement. According to studies, 8% of adolescents take creatine. The supplement is particularly popular among high school, college, and professional athletes, especially football and hockey players, wrestlers, and gymnasts. An estimated 40% of college athletes and up to half of professional athletes say they use creatine supplements. Creatine is thought to improve strength, increase lean muscle mass, and help the muscles recover more quickly during exercise. This muscular boost may help athletes achieve bursts of speed and energy, especially during short bouts of high-intensity activities such as weight lifting or sprinting. I will now discuss the 7 most controversial creatine topics 1 Creatine is similar to anabolic steroids. Myth. Steroids mimic testosterone and are banned in the Olympics and in professional...

Stress Management Among College Students

...Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter reviews the related literature and studies from other researches relevant to the present study. Related Literature Many researches have been conducted to know what stress is all about and its effects to human if it exceeds beyond our control. Selye as cited by Berry (1997) defined stress in physiological terms as a non-specific or generalized bodily response. This response results when any demand is made on the body, whether it is an environment condition that we must survive or a demand that we make ourselves in order to accomplish a personal goal. Selye distinguished between two forms of stress. Distress is the response to negative events and eustress (euphoria) is the response to positive events. Stress is good and will motivate people to succeed, but too much stress can affect one’s performance (http://www.chow.com). Greener as cited by de Jesus (2010:p.22) opined that most people can cope with and even need a certain amount of stress to perform to the peak of their ability but when demands for dealing with it outstrip resources, strength or time, it becomes dangerous. Feldman (2005) said that stress is a normal part of life and not a necessary a bad part of life. However, it is also clear that too much stress can take a toll on both physical and psychological health. According to Stuthers (2000), stress is what people feel when they are worried or...
