The Reconstruction Era that occurred several years after the Civil War was proved to be a difficult time for many americans. Some people agree that the Reconstruction was successful in some ways, but people also agree that the Reconstruction failed socially, economically, and politically. There were not many ways in which the Reconstruction was successful. Before the Reconstruction Era occurred, congress added the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the United States constitution. The 13th amendment states that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States or and place subject to their jurisdiction…” (Doc B) This would mean …show more content…
In a piece from The Americans it states that “Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and ‘sick of carpet-bag’ government, many Northern voters shifted their attention to such national concerns as the Panic of 1873 and corruption in Grant’s administration…” (Doc I) Yes of course national concerns like these two events were quite important events, but the south really needed to focus on coming together after the war and putting an end to segregation towards blacks. There was also problems that occurred between the southern Democrats and the confederates. The southern democrats gained their strength back before the war and confederate officers were disqualified from office. The confederates often put blacks down. In The Era of Reconstruction, it states that “In May 1872, because of pressure from the Liberal Republican, Congress passed a general amnesty act which restored the right of office holding [and voting] to the vast majority of those who have been disqualified…” (Doc J) After the war, this act was then created and the Confederate’s leadership was restored back to them so they just can put blacks
