By the end of the Second World War, a significant conflict arose between Allied powers. The United States and the Soviet Union were the two major nations who had their differences within their goals, values, and beliefs. It was a political and economic struggle for the U.S. and the USSR. Their tense relationship was because they wanted to spread their ideology across the world. The dispute among the powers lasted from 1945 up to 1991. This crucial disagreement between the Americans and the Soviets is known as the Cold War. The United States is responsible for the start of the infamous Cold War because they started the arms race and tried preventing communism by spreading democracy.

A published in the British Foreign Policy (BFP) states, “Its culmination, following Soviet rejection of the Marshall Plan in 1947, was the communist coup d'etat in Czechoslovakia in February 1948. It is noteworthy that just as no act at Yalta underwrote a Soviet sphere of interest in Europe, so none had assigned Czechoslovakia to such a sphere…” (Document 1). The British would rather be allianced with the U.S. rather than the Soviet Union in this conflict. That is why they support the United State’s claims of the USSR starting the Cold War. The document states that because the Soviets did not approve of the Marshall Plan, they ended up “violently taking over” Czechoslovakia. The Marshall Plan was an American proposition to help aid Western Europe. Also in the document in the BFP, it accuses the Soviet Union of “assigning” communism in Czechoslovakia. “The Soviet Union viewed NATO as a threat. In response, the Soviets developed an alliance system in 1955 as a part of their own containment policy. It was known as the Warsaw Pact” (Chapter 17, pg 479). People inaccurately see the Warsaw Pact alliance as the one of the reasons for the Cold War, yet there is a huge flaw in their idea. The Soviet Union only created this alliance because they felt threatened by the defense group NATO formed by the U.S. and its alliances. Each nation under NATO will have to immediately take whatever action it considers necessary to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area. Since the USSR is not a part of this defense organization, they resulted in the fear of being vulnerable at risk. The several actions done by the USSR before and during the Cold War is mistakenly seen as bad and terrible, yet no one sees all the unfavorable actions done by the United States.
