...Exec Summary: W. W. Grainger, Inc. is recently thinking of redesigning the supply chain for shipments from China/Taiwan. The reason being as an obvious to reduce costs, lead times and to improve supply chain efficiency. The major issue identified was the lead time and a huge fixed overhead because of small shipments which then were consolidated by the company to make a full 40-feet container load. Through a thorough cost analysis and weightage of pros and cons of three alternatives, the team recommends to use an NVOCC (Non-Vessel operating common carrier) for small shipments which will lead to a lot lesser lead times and will help reduce costs as well. Along with this, the recommendation is also to increase packing efficiency for company’s already in use 20/40-feet containers. Currently the packing efficiency is 85%, and just by making it 95% the cost saving is $ 253,863.89 annually which will increase as total shipments are forecasted to grow by 15% for the next 5 years. Issues: The major issue identified in the case is to reduce the expenses on consolidated shipments from china overall increasing the supply chain efficiency. This issue is in fact more of an opportunity and the opportunity is to reduce the variable cost associated with the consolidated shipments as the estimated growth in shipments from China and Taiwan is 15% per year. This growth rate implies the cost reduction in consolidated shipments which is 11% of total will be contributed to profit margin. Inferred...

...IAATO Vessel Emergency Contingency Plan An Update IAATO Vessel Emergency Contingency Plan 2006-2007 IAATO Operational Document Information Paper submitted by The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators Introduction The following IAATO Vessel Emergency Contingency Plan was agreed to originally at IAATO’s 14th Annual General Meeting, May 2003. It was tabled as ATCM XXVI IP069 and has been in place for all subsequent seasons. At IAATO’s 17th Annual General Meeting, April 2006, the plan was reviewed first by IAATO’s Marine Committee and then presented to all ship operators for discussion and adoption. It was agreed by the membership that the plan was effective and only required additional supplemental text. The plan retains the flexibility to be amended should international shipping regulations be changed or operators find more efficient and practical ways to work. The plan is outlined below, and an IAATO Emergency Contingency Plan Flow Chart, is shown in Appendix A. This paper was originally prepared by Captain Leif Skog and reviewed and or updated each year since 2003. Captain Skog has been working in Antarctica for 27 years and is the Vice President of Marine Operations for IAATO member, Lindblad Expeditions. Background All IAATO vessels operating in Antarctica are required to operate under the ISM Code and consequently they must have a well-established Safety Management System (SMS) in place in addition to the IAATO emergency...

...Wholesale Corp. In this case Kimberly Cloutier worked as a cashier for Costco. In March 2001, Costco revised its dress code to prohibit all facial jewelry, aside from earrings. Cloutier was advised to remove facial piercings. Cloutier refused because she is a member of the Church of Body Modification (CBM), which was established in 1999 and has about 1,000 members who participate in such practices as piercing, tattooing, branding, cutting, and body manipulation. Eventually, Cloutier was fired. The district court granted summary judgment on the basis that Costco had offered a reasonable accommodation. But the First Circuit decides to uphold the grant of summary judgment on other grounds. The only accommodation that Cloutier will accept is exemption from the dress code. The First Circuit holds that Costco had no duty to offer a reasonable accommodation because doing so would create an undue hardship. An accommodation constitutes an undue hardship if it would impose more than a de minimis cost on the employer. The undue hardship claimed by Costco is that it has a legitimate interest in presenting a workforce to its customers that is, at least in Costco's eyes, reasonably professional in appearance. Costco has determined that facial piercings, aside from earrings, detract from the "neat, clean and professional image" that it aims to cultivate. Such a business determination is within its discretion. For similar reasons, the Court also upholds the grant of summary judgment on a claim brought...

...Week 3 Homework Assignment for Chapters 9, 10 and 11 Chapter 9 Hardage v. CBS 1. What were the legal issues in this case? What did the court decide? In the summer of 1998, Hardage began working as an advertising account executive for KSTW-TV, a television station owned by Viacom Television Stations, Inc. and managed by CBS Broadcasting Inc. He was promoted to Local Sales Manager in February of 2000, and in this position, he worked with another Local Sales Manager, Nadene Stauffer, to manage and supervise the account executives. Patty Dean, the General Sales Manager, who was in turn supervised by defendant Sparks, the station’s General Manager, supervised both Hardage and Stauffer. Until about a month before Hardage resigned in August of 2001, he worked in the Seattle sales office whereas Sparks worked in the management office in Tacoma. Hardage contends he was sexually harassed by Sparks on several occasions and subjected to retaliation after he rejected her advances. He alleges that during Sparks' visits to the Seattle office, she repeatedly flirted with him and made inappropriate comments-such as “[y]ou need somebody that's older and more stable that can take care of you.” Leo Elbert, another employee at KSTW, stated that Sparks would “camp out” in Hardage's office, kick back in his chair with her feet on his desk, and smile and giggle in a flirtatious manner. Hardage asserts that he never flirted...

...last five years. Shale gas has become a common discussion topic in the industry as nobody wants to miss the opportunities that are related to the exploitation of gas from these resources. Policymakers in many countries with shale gas resources are seeking to replicate the success of shale gas in the US. This short write-up provides: (a) Summary of the global shale gas resources (b) Estimated economics of shale gas development Some useful rules of thumb are provided that can be used to quickly assess the estimated profitability of shale gas development. Natural gas is produced from different types of gas accumulations. These accumulations are classified into conventional and unconventional gas (UG) resources. The conventional gas can be either associated gas (gas produced with oil), gas cap gas (a gas column in direct communication with oil column below) or non-associated gas (gas reservoir by itself). The unconventional gas is non-associated gas and it comes from hydrocarbon bearing formations that are classified as Tight Gas, Coal Bed Methane (CBM), Shale Gas and Gas Hydrates. Gas has been produced from tight gas and CBM for more than three decades. Production from shale gas started about a decade ago. In 2011, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) commissioned an external consultant to assess the global potential of shale gas resources. The report assessed 48 shale gas basins in 32 countries, containing almost 70 shale gas formations. According to...

...Poverty Reduction Strategy and Poverty Monitoring: Philippine Case Study By Celia M. Reyes and Lani E. Valencia* I. Introduction The overarching goal of development efforts is the improvement in the quality of life of the people. The Philippines is no exception. Being one of the nations who participated in the Millenium Summit in September 2000, it has committed to achieve 48 targets including eradication of poverty. In addition to international commitments, the Philippines has been working toward poverty reduction for decades. It has even included targets on human development and poverty reduction in its medium-term development plans. The growing consensus is towards a comprehensive approach to poverty reduction. Rapid and sustained economic growth is needed to improve the quality of life of the population; at the same time targeted interventions aimed at reducing poverty are needed to reach the very poor and marginalized sectors of the economy. With poverty reduction as main goal of the government, the demand for poverty statistics has become more important. Several poverty monitoring systems are being conducted both at the national and community level providing income and non-income based measures of poverty. These have become the basis for social and economic development plans and programs of national and local governments. The objectives of this paper are to examine the poverty situation in the Philippines and to assess the country’s poverty reduction strategy and policy...

...AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION IMPACTS MY CAREER SUCCESS The American Psychological Association is one of the largest associations of psychologists worldwide. Their mission is to advance psychology as a science and profession and to promote health, education and human welfare. Introduction When I was entering the work force, I thought about working for a great company, I thought of a company where my skills would be valued and rewarded. I wanted to work for a company that would give me clear directions and set goals for me to achieve. I hope that my co workers would be supportive and would help me when needed. I hope the company would give me time off when needed, and my employer would be understanding and give me the time needed. I hope for a great benefits package. I hope for a company with good training program for job advancement. Sounds great? Maybe in a perfect world, but in the real world, working conditions are often far less than great. Overworked and unappreciated, many workers endure psychologically conditions on the job. Why are psychologically healthy workplaces important for employers? A recent study by Northwestern National Life found that twenty-five percent of workers cite their jobs as the number-one source of stress in their lives. Stress can contribute to employee illness and lost time at work. Stressful job conditions can lead to distraction and cause work-related injuries. It can result in increased employee turnover and reduced...

...PREFACE As a part of the course curriculum, the second year MBA students are required to undertake a study on macro analysis of a particular industry and thereby, prepare a project report on the chosen industry. The objective behind preparing this project report is to relate the management subjects taught in the classroom to their practical application and to get insight into practical situation. Petroleum Industry is considered to be the back bone of an economy because this is the main source of energy till date. Any economy around the world would fail to advance a single step in the absence of Petroleum Industry. The Petroleum Industry is divided into two segments namely Upstream Sector consisting of Exploration and Production of crude oil while the Downstream Sector consists of Refining, Processing, Storing, Marketing and Distribution of petroleum products. The most important part of the Petroleum Industry is the Petroleum Refining Industry which refines the crude oil to convert it to the usable fuel. It also derives many derivative products out of the crude petroleum like natural gas, naphtha, etc which can be used in various ways. Hence, for these reasons, we have chosen the Downstream Sector of the Indian Petroleum Industry for our Macro Analysis project. As this is a Macro Analysis project, we have concentrated on the Indian Petroleum Industry and that too focusing on the Downstream Sector for our study and not gone into the in depth analysis of the various...

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ONGC leads the way when it comes to achieving carbon neutrality within the energy sector. In an effort to do so, it has become the first PSU to achieve emission reduction certificates from the United Nations. Achievements of this sort, coupled with growth, make ONGC the undisputed leader in its business The Company has set many milestones and the government has decided to bestow the “Maharatna” status with increased empowerments and distinctly higher status as a premier Public Sector Undertaking. This represents a growth of 12% in both turnover and net worth and 13% in net profit over FY-2010. The company continued to pursue its growth strategy despite the fact that global economy was in shambles and the oil industry had been at crossroads since later half of 2008. The growth vehicle of ONGC, “ONGC VIDESH LTD.” With 40 projects in 15 countries sourced 8.87 MTOE of oil and gas in FY 2010: the highest ever.
