What are the most important ethical dilemmas. problems, and/or controversies in punishment that we face in today's justice system? Address a minimum of three.
Furthermore, what can to done to draw attention to these issues?
What are some possible solutions and/or policy implications that can address the ethical dilemmas/problems/controversies you selected?
Lastly, in your opinion, why are these issues more "important" that others that we covered this semester? The 1970s War on Drugs is one of the most important ethical issues that we face in today’s justice system. The War on Drugs is more important than others because it has many negative trickling effects from the shift to punitive policies. The War on Drugs has made America the leader in incarceration rates (Banks 2005:114). These high incarceration rates within America have also led to overcrowding, racial bias, increase in women in prison, and many other negative effects. The public does need to be educated on the negative effects from the War on Drugs in order to push for change in our punitive policies for non-violent drug offenders. In order to change these negative effects, America needs to get rid of mandatory minimums and the three strikes laws. These laws are placing many non-violent drug offenders in prison. These offenders are in need of substance abuse treatment in order to stop the vicious recidivism cycle. Wrongful conviction is another very important ethical issue that we are facing in today’s justice system. Wrongful convictions are very important when it comes to ethical issues because innocent people are being put on death row by our government. There are organizations with insightful information about this issue on their websites such as the Innocent Project. Wrongful convictions are becoming more prevalent due to the technology of DNA testing (Innocence Project website). However, many cases in the justice system do not have DNA evidence to provide the truth behind who is the correct offender. Therefore, there needs to be strict guidelines when it comes to a death penalty case. Eyewitness testimony really needs to be evaluated before they speak in front of a jury on such important cases determining an individual’s life or death. Shackling pregnant women in labor is another very important ethical issue that we face in today’s justice system. This ethical issue is not just about the treatment of the women offenders while giving birth to a new life, but it is also about the proper treatment of an innocence child being born. Kimberly Mays experienced being treated in such an inhumane manner when she was in labor; the nurse put her hand over her mouth when she yelled out in pain and was shackled to the hospital bed throughout her labor experience (Allen 2010). The public should also be educated on this type of treatment of women in labor in order to push for change. Women in labor are already in such excruciating pain that it is highly unlikely that they will get up and run away if they are not shackled to the hospital bed. A guard waiting outside of the hospital room is just as much security needed when a new life is being brought into this world.

Its themes are childhood, growing up, becoming part of the world and living with sorrow and love. At first glance, one would think that the title refers to the hurt man that the mother lets into their house – and that is probably true. But I believe that it also refers to the change in Mat, how his innocent, unknowing heart suddenly learns of pain through his mother’s care of the man. The boy is actually a quite nice shot, but the boy dislikes the situation more and more, as the number of killed kangaroos rises. Finally, the boy spots a male kangaroo, he shots the animal and feels like a man, but he also feels regret. There are only two characters in this short story; we have the boy and the man. The boy is the essential character, and the one we follow throughout the entire story and the man is merely a sort of guide (page 1 line 1 – 9). The man could very easily be the boy’s father, but since he is not mentioned as “the father”, he could also very easily be a man, who the boy shares a bond with. The boy is in his youth and is actually on his way to becoming a man, which he also does at the end (page 4 line 16 – 19), while the man is probably somewhere between 35 -45, since he is still in shape to hunt (page 1 line 16 – 19), but he is still old enough to provide some sort of guidance. "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening", when read casually, presents the reader with a quiet moment, a respite, a short break from a journey. Peaceful and sleepy it almost comforts the reader with its imagery and sense of calm. Yet under that calm is a lot of emotional undercurrent, similar to the surface of a frozen river. Its what's under the ice that is more interesting. Our main character, tells us in the first stanza that he has paused a moment (line 3). He has paused to take in a peaceful scene.
