...Cell- Phone-Induced Driver Distraction Inattentional blindness is being blind to stimuli you were not expected to see, or failing to recognize an unexpected stimulus in plain sight. Certain criteria must be followed in order to be classified as an event of inattenional blindness. These criteria are; the observer must fail to notice a visual object or event, the object or event must be fully visible, observers must be able to readily identify the object if they consciously perceive it, and the event must be unexpected. Talking on a cell phone is a great example of how inattentional blindness can be produced. For example, if I were engaging in a conversation on my cell phone while driving my car, I wouldn’t be fully paying attention to the road. My conversation would be distracting me from having a clear mind on the road and therefor I would be blind to certain (or many) stimuli I pass by or come across. For example, while driving and talking on my phone, I may pass a bicyclist and not even be aware of him or her, because the distraction of my phone conversation has made me create an inattentional blindness to the event. David L. Strayer and Frank A. Drew’s conducted a research study of how the effects of driving a car while talking on a cell phone can induce driving distractions and cause inattention blindness to the event. The researchers stated in their article on page 128 “The objective of this article is to muster evidence in support of the hypothesis that cell- phone conversations...

...Driven to Distraction by Cell Phones Sandra Greene ENG 215 Professor Erica Ellsworth 18 May, 2012 Driven to Distraction by Cell Phones Countless numbers of people are dying every day. These deaths are not limited to certain areas but are occurring nationally. They are pointless deaths because something could be done to prevent it from happening. Imagine if stopping one simple act could save countless lives. That simple act would be to stop being distracted by our cell phones when driving. Are we still willing to listen or do we discount or tune out the speaker and continue on about our business? The fact is that all states should have standardized laws banning cell phone use while driving because talking, texting, and reading texts distract drivers and lead to accidents and death. A brief history of the cell phone shows that “between 1998 and 2001, more than 100 million cell phones were sold. By the end of the 90's, more than 70 million users existed. At the end of 2000, there were over 100 million subscribers, so the 2000’s are the decade that cell phones became common” (Strayer and Cooper, 2009). It is also the decade that lives started to be lost due to cell phone use while driving. Today almost everyone has a cell phone. It is hard to imagine a time when we did not have cell phones available to us. Most people can barely remember having to use pay phones to make calls. Cell phones are helpful...

...Having a cell phone in today’s society has become a regular part of life. Even I have a cell phone and I’m really not a big talker. What’s astonishing to me is kids seem to all have cell phones by the time they get into middle school. We rely on these communication devices for every aspect of our daily lives, whether for personal use or for work. To me we rely so heavily on the cell phone that it is becoming dangerous. Think to a time when you were driving down the road and came up on a slower vehicle. They were swerving within their lane, couldn’t keep a constant speed and just seemed like they were completely distracted and not paying attention to the road and the seemingly easy task of driving. You want to get by the person but every time an opportunity to do so came into view it would quickly disappear because the other driver would speed up or do something to avert your opportunity. Finally you get your chance and go around the person. You look over in an attempt to quench your curiosity and see the person is talking on their cell phone. It all makes sense now; they are paying more attention to the conversation they have going on than to their driving. Driving is a dangerous activity in itself, but when you add other distractions like talking and or texting on a cell phone, the outcomes can be anything but pleasant and lead to extensive consequences. Drivers are far more distracted while talking on a cell phone than just talking to a passenger in the car...

...The Effects of Cell-Phone and Text-Message Distractions on True and False Recognition Chase Flowers Psychology 201 03-14-12 Flowers 1 Abstract This study reviewed the effects of communication distractions such as cell-phone and texting on true and false recognition. “Participants who tested the study were presented with 24 Deese- Roediger-McDermott (DRM) lists while investigating the presence of absence of cell-phone and text-messaging distractions during study.” The participants were given a list of related words such as mother, crib, and diaper liked to non- related words such as baby. After they studied the list of words, the participants recalled or recognized the words. “Participants not only demonstrate high remembrance for presented words such as crib, but also recollection for non-related words such as baby.” The related words were examples of the true memory and the non-related words were examples of the false memory. “The true memory was highest when the participants were not presented with any distractions during study or DRM words, but poorer when they were required to complete a cell-phone conversation or text message task during study.” The results of this study are examined with respects to both activation monitoring and fuzzy trace theories. Introduction There are about 1.5 billion cell phones currently in used with an average of 75 billion text messages sent monthly worldwide. Although cellular use is great for communication...

...11 Nov. 2014 Outline Thesis: The usage of cell phones in modern day society has caused quite the problem for citizens in this generation by being a major distraction, causing addictions, and has sadly became the main resource of communication. I. Introduction: What if every cell phone in the world crashed? How would society communicate? How would one know when someone’s birthday is without getting a notification for it? Some people wouldn’t even know when to get up each morning. Thirty years ago, these questions would be easily answered, but it would have taken separate resources to solve each issue. Most tasks nowadays, however, are done by using this single device. The overuse of cell phones in modern day society has caused quite the problem for citizens in this generation by being a major distraction, causing addictions, and, sadly, becoming the main resource of communication. (Tip: 1. Ask a provocative question or disturbing question.) II. One problem with cell phones in today’s society is that they have become major distractions. A. Cell phones are distracting employees in the workplace and leaving them with their jobs halfway done. B. Not only are cell phones a distraction in the workplace, they are also a distraction and disruptive in school districts, causing students attention to be elsewhere. C. In addition to cell phones being distracting, people often like to multi-task by walking or driving while texting. These things case them...

...ability to stream video or watch downloaded movies, texting, calling, almost anything imaginable can be accomplished with these newer devices but what they cannot do is improve a drivers skills or driving habits, in fact in most cases these devices impair one’s ability to drive safely. Smartphone/cell phone use needs to be banned from use in automobiles except to use for hands free communication only. How can this problem be addressed so that the drivers of this Nation can feel safe without wondering what the driver next to them is doing on their cell phone. A Federal proposal that would ensure a nationwide ban on cell phone use while driving would help accomplish this. The proposal would allow officers to stop any driver that is using a cell phone as a primary offense. This means that if you have a cell phone in your hands for any reason you can be stopped for it. Why is such a harsh course of action required, as stated these unnecessary distractions can lead to serious injury or loss of life and that is a cost too great to ignore. This proposal would carry stiff punishments as well, since it has been shown that there is little difference between driving intoxicated or texting/cell phone use then the punishment should be similar. Society expects...

...To Ban or not To Ban the Use of Cell Phones while Driving? Many places nationwide are now seeing the dangers of the use of cell phones while driving is on the rise. Not only is it a danger to the person using the cell phone, but anyone around the user. It only takes a fraction of a second to lose control of a vehicle; and who knows what can happen in that fraction of a second. Will a life be lost? Will two or more lives be lost? We know what can happen to an extent, but let’s not find out what the full extent is. We need everyone, including the Government, around the nation to really see the pure danger and horrible outcomes of cell phone usage behind the wheel. The first reason why we need to ban cell phone usage behind the wheel is because it is a huge distraction to the driver. The driver is not fully focused, alert, or at their full awareness when they are using their cell phone. Secondly, this so called distraction can or will lead to some sort of accident. Whether that accident is fatal or leaving the other person in critical condition. Thirdly, that last reason we should really ban this act is because the drivers are purely reckless. These drivers can be compared to drivers that are under the influence due to their lack of judgment and their ability to focus on the road. I’m sure that people are quality of looking at a text or answering their phone while driving, but my intention is to try to get everyone aware of the dangers of this action, and to hopefully get people...

...Car accidents are common on a daily basis, and the causes behind these crashes are the many different distractions we have throughout the day, but talking on the phone and even texting while driving is the number one cause of crashes according to recent studies. This distraction can be deadly in many ways and can put the driver as well as the passengers in danger; therefore the use of technology while driving is never an option. The usage of phones either by text or call are a problem when it comes to driving because they do not allow people to focus on their surroundings like incoming traffic and pedestrians, causing crashes and many times even death. Of course, teenagers play a very important role in this controversial topic, as they have been more involved in the evolution of technology; leading them to an addiction to it. In addition, the Department of Transportation is working on banning the use of cell phones while...

...Textbooks, Not Texting Cell phones in school have been a debated topic worldwide for the last decade. The question everyone asks is, “Should cell phones be allowed in school?” Personally I think cell phones are fantastic devices that people should have to communicate with each other. However, many people misuse the purpose of their cell phones. Therefore the cell phones should not belong in schools. There are many advantages and disadvantages of owning a cell phone. However, many students who own cell phones use them for the wrong reasons. Cells phones should not be allowed within schools to be used by students because they cause distractions, provoke cheating, and can be used for illegal purposes. Distractions Cell phones have many features and abilities that allow students to communicate, socialize etc. This leads to distraction and less concentration from students in school. The most significant feature of cell phones that leads to distraction is texting. Statistics verified that teens with cell phones send 440 text messages a week and 110 of those texts happen in the classroom. Text messaging has become the “future” method of passing notes in school. Examples of students’ texting in class, often behind the teachers back, will make the child lose out on the learning opportunity and affect their studies which soon lead to lower grades. Even if cell phones are not being used by the students, a cell phone that is not off and rings during class time, disrupts the whole...

Almost everyone has seen or heard a ad about texting and driving and what damage they cause. Although it is not a consistent problem, cell phones do cause wrecks and some have been fatal. Cell phones were first introduced in the U.S. in the mid 1980’s, and have since experienced dramatic growth. According to the United States Department of Transportation, 5,747 people were killed because of driving distractions and approximately 448,000 were injured in 2009 alone. Cellular phones are becoming increasingly popular, marked by a 1,685 percent increase in the number of users from 1988 to 1995. So as a result, many, many people use cell phones, some need to, like businessmen or lawyers who depend on phones to run their business. ...Outlaw the Use of Handheld Cell Phones While Driving CL English 111.4 November 9, 2009 Abstract Cell phones should be banned to make for a safer country. When considering whether or not cell phones should be allowed to be used while driving, generates two different positions. The use of a cell phone while a car is in motion should be made illegal throughout the United States with exceptions of emergencies. Cell phones are a distraction and our brain is better at concentrating on one thing at a time, while using a cell phone you have a slower reaction time and it will reduce the amount of vehicle accidents. Some argue that cell phones cause just as much distraction as many other things such as the radio and that cell phones are needed for emergencies. Others argue that a law banning the use will help decrease vehicle accidents and increase peoples concentration on driving. Outlaw the use of Handheld Cell Phones While Driving “500,000 passenger vehicle drivers are talking on hand-held cell phones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration” (O’Rourke, 2004). When considering whether or not cell phones should be allowed while driving, causes deep feelings to be expressed on both sides of the issue. Some argue that cell phones cause just as much distraction as many other things, such as the radio. Others argue that such a law will help decrease vehicle accidents and increase the driver’s concentration on driving. Our first concern should be the safety of...

...Assignment five: Persuasive paper part 3: possible Disadvantages, Answers, with Visuals Marc Fiston Professor: Susan Sgroi English 215 Strayer University September 3rd, 2014 Topic: should regulations regarding the use of cell phones while driving be standardized? The use cell phones have spread like wild fire in the last ten years. It has become a part of everyday life for many Americans citizens, and a good number of people depend on them to carry out daily operations. Unfortunately, many accidents have taken place in the ten years due to the use of cell phones while on the road. The leads to believe that if people cannot concentrate on the road while talking or texting on cell phones they should not have a cell phone near them at all while driving. The purpose of this research is to discover if texting while driving is the leading cause of automobile accidents of today. Society does not view texting while driving as a safe practice. There are many articles, news reports, and laws passed on texting while operating a vehicle because of the danger associated with the act. Texting while driving causes numerous of problems such as: distraction from the road, a decrease of attention once he or she turns away from the road in responding to a text, and limiting physical ability because texting requires the use of one or both hands to reply to messages. These are some of the issues researchers investigate in finding a conclusion to if the individuals should or should not...
