Four: This seems awful. What do humans do about this problem?
John Cena: The United States, which is the country we are in now, is a democratic society. So we vote on the issues we have. We have three branches or departments of government. The three branches are the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branch. Bills, or proposals, are first passed by the legislative , then the President, or Executive Branch, can approve or veto it. If the president approves it then the Judicial Branch either approves it or vetoes it, also. But if he vetoes it then the bill gets sent back to the Legislative Branch for revision. Same thing happens if the Judicial Branch vetoes the bill.
One: Is there sub-groups in the branches?
John Cena: The Legislative Branch…show more content… Lobbyist are companies or individuals who try to influence the legislation for their own benefit. The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) is a private prison company that operate 69 facilities across America and the District of Columbia. They spent over $19 million on lobbying activities despite repeatedly saying they never lobby. They, also, hire former legislators took take advantage of their political connections. The CCA is an example of a large corporation using money to shape the law to their liking. But there are nonprofit organizations that use their power to help the people directly, such as the National Coalition of Homelessness. Their mission is to prevent and end homelessness by providing them with programs which focus on public education, protecting their civil liberties, and grassroot organizing. Grassroots organizing means they try to involve people who are or formerly experienced homelessness with their…show more content… You cannot force someone to seek help if they do not want to be helped.
Two: I don’t think it’s that simple.
John Cena: Two is right. You have to think of the families who take care of their mentally ill family member. It’s not an easy task. But also think of the mentally ill people who are forced into treatment. People need to be supported into treatment rather than be stripped of their voice. But don’t totally disregard the opinions of the families involved though. It’s a very controversial matter.
Four: Ok. Last question. What does the judicial branch do?
John Cena: The judicial branch decides if a law is constitutional or not. A case between Theon Jackson, a civilian, versus the state of Indiana caused an uproar because Jackson, a deaf mute, was charged with petty theft. Before standing trial physicians said he was incompetent and even if he did somehow began talking he still would not be fit to stand trial. So the state of Indiana transferred Jackson to a mental facility, but it was inadequate for his condition. There he was held indefinitely until he was competent enough to stand trial. This was significant because the state violated the 4th and 14th Amendments: cruel and unusual punishments and without due process. The Supreme Court damed this as unconstitutional and now we have a law that say that no courts should be able to detain us for any length of time if we are deemed as
