...RTT1 Task 1 Eric M. Lunsford Western Governors University Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership January 11, 2015 RTT1 Task 1 A. Nursing Sensitive Indicator Since Florence Nightingale’s work over one hundred years ago, researchers have tried to define nursing’s role on patient health outcomes. Nursing Sensitive Indicators (NSI) have been developed through the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) to address this need. The NDNQI provides nursing specific indicators that help evaluate nursing care at the unit level. NSI are nursing specific structures and processes that have a direct impact on patient outcomes. Through the NDNQI, reporting standards are developed for nursing performance. Over eleven hundred facilities nationwide provide data based on these indicators to NDNQI ("The National Database," 2014). NSI are used in several ways. First, NSI data can be reviewed so facilities can identify problems in patient care related to nursing in their units. A relationship between NSI patient outcomes and processes can be identified. After improvements have been implemented facilities can measure their effectiveness by reanalyzing this data. Second, because NSI measure nursing at the unit level, facilities can compare their nurses’ performances to similar units. These comparisons can be used to identify best practices other facilities have implemented to incorporate them in their hospital. Lastly, facilities with higher NSI can use...

...Elder abuse is not a new phenomenon. There is evidence of its existence centuries ago. More recent is recognition of elder abuse as a health and social problem. In the United States this first surfaced in the 1950s, but it was not until the 1980s that elder abuse “came of age” as a major concern of older Americans. However, elder abuse is not confined to a single locale. Rather, it is a global problem, found in both developed and developing countries (Antezberger, 2009). The purpose of this essay is to example the types of elder abuse, how to identify elder abuse, risk factors associated with elder abuse, reporting elder abuse and ethics associated with elder abuse in a healthcare role, specifically as a certified nurse assistant (CNA). Forms of Elder Abuse Unfortunately elder abuse can take many forms. The first form and obvious is physical abuse. Physical abuse is the use of force that causes unnecessary pain or injury, even if the reason is to help, can be regarded as abusive behavior. Physical abuse can include deliberate or inadvertent hitting, beating, pushing, kicking, pinching, burning, biting, overmedicating, under medicating, or force-feeding; improper use of physical or chemical restraints; and exposure to severe weather. Emotional or psychological abuse is a form of abuse or behaviors that causes an older adult to have fear, mental anguish or emotional pain or distress. This kind of abuse includes name-calling, intimidation, insults and threats which could lead to...

...sitting in my car, rewinding the day in my head like a video on slow rewind. Today was my first day as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) and I bolted through the doors excited about my new job, only to have been meet in the face with a stench that you could not deny that was of urine and feces. My first reaction was to throw up, I thought how can these people breathe in here? Do they change these people? Give them showers? Surely something had to be done about the smell. When I asked, I was told I would get used to it. To me, I didn’t understand why or how we could let our elders smell like that. If they refused a shower, then to me we should be giving them a bed bath. The patients needed some form of cleaning daily. I had 13 patients on my list to get up for breakfast and shower or bed bath before breakfast. I started on my list, only to find that if I wanted things done right then it takes a lot longer than the allotted time. So that means that some of the 13 patients that are awake in the morning more than half of them do not receive proper care. You are rushed from the minute you clock in until you clock out. Still not finishing everything that needed to be done. I finished with breakfast, one of my ladies didn’t get up for breakfast, so after breakfast I went in to check on her and I couldn’t get any response from her. I flagged down the DON (Director of Nursing) and asked her for her assistance, and when she came into the room, she was in shock the woman that I could not...

...Understand: A Career as a Nursing Assistant Have you ever asked the question who takes care of my grandparents or parents while they’re in a nursing home or hospital? Do you have an interest in making someone’s life easier by helping them with simple life tasks? If you have ever been interested in helping someone, then becoming a nursing assistant is the right job for you. The definition of a nursing assistant is “A person who has completed a brief health care training program and who provides support services for RNs and LPNs. Also known as an orderly or, when certified by a state agency, a certified nurse aide (CNA).” In this essay I will explain what the definition of a nursing assistant is to me. I will also include the job description of a nursing assistant, and why they are the eyes and ears for nurses. To begin with, a nursing assistant in my definition is a person that does daily cares on a patient/resident according to their care plan. The job description of a nursing assistant is as follows; “Assists with patient's assessment and care planning, in meeting nutrition and elimination needs, assists patients with mobility, makes sure patient comfortable and helps with anxiety relief, promotes patient safety and environmental cleanliness, assist with unit management and efficiency.” To sum the job description into an easier definition, nursing assistants assist with all life activities that a resident can’t do on their own. Nursing assistants also give love and support...

...school, I really did not think much, if at all, about going to college. I graduated from high school in 1982, after I graduated, I decided to join the military (US Army). I spent 10 years serving my country, but in 1992 decided to get out of the military. I moved to Philadelphia Pa, instead of returning to Chicago. I lived in Philadelphia pa for 14 years, where I worked as a chemical operator manufacturing and testing specialty chemicals for 13 of those years, but I lost my job once the plant I was working for closed. I worked odd jobs for two years, but never could find work I really wanted, so in October 2009 I decided to return home to Chicago. Once back in Chicago I could find work in the field I was looking for, so I took a Certified nursing assistant course (the job I’m working now), but Still not satisfied, so I started volunteering at my daughter school working with the staff, students and parents. I found myself working with teachers in over crowed classrooms. After the first year the school principal started noticing the work I was doing and was really impressed and asked had I ever considered going back to school and I said yes , but, and this started me to thinking . I have been around enough to know that that without education, I would never get anywhere in life, but I always found reasons for not taking the plunge, however after a lot of thinking , I realized that my reasons for not going to college didn’t hold up to the benefits of going , so here I am focused...

...Professor Math080-73F 26 August 2015 “Math Autobiography” My name is .....and I am thirty-eight years old. I have been with my husband for almost twenty years and we have three children ages 19, 17, and 10. I was a young mother and regrettably, a high school dropout. If my memory serves me correctly, the last math class I remember successfully completing was back in 1991 when I was in the eighth grade. I did take algebra my freshman year, but due to leaving high school early, I never really learned much in that class. The instructor for that course was my favorite math teacher, and his name was Mr. Hernon. He did not necessarily have the best teaching methods, but he did not fail one student in his class. He saw every one of his student’s potential and went above and beyond to help us out. In fact, I remember when he would walk around the classroom while we were testing and should he see that one of our answers were incorrect, he would point to the question and ask, “Are you sure about this one?” I think he did this in order to prompt us to ask for help, in which he would eagerly assisted should we accept his offer. Math is not one of my favorite subjects and I have found it difficult to comprehend once there were letters introduced into it. When I was a teenager, I was not very motivated and I had no one to push me in the right direction to become successful, so school was not my number one priority. Now that I am older and matured, I have set better standards for myself...

...the workplace. At the workplace you are representing the company that you work for, you’re communicating with the people that affect your future and you are establishing a reputation for yourself as a co-worker and employee. In which case, using professional communication can shed a positive light onto every important area at work. Lastly, in certain social settings it is appropriate to use professional communication. For instance, when meeting new people, you want to use a certain formal and proper interaction technique rather than being too comfortable with them at first. However, once you get to know the people better you can begin to drop the formalities and gain a comfortable environment with them where you are more yourself. In the nursing career field, professional communication is a necessity. As a nurse, I will probably meet a lot of people on one of the worst days of their lives. I will have to be able to communicate what is going on with them, make them feel comfortable with the new found information, and ensure them that I know how to do my job effectively. I will have to convey peace to them in a professional manner, but also in a way that they will be able to understand. Empathy is a professional communication technique that I...

...attend? Do I even want to go there? How do I start? Everyone gets so nervous, I get nervous and we all have the right to be. We are all trying to take the next step in moving on. After a long period of waste of time or after a long break from school. I have already come to a decision about the previous questions. I know I want to go to school, and I know I want to attend at LIU University, the reason why I choose liu is because I heard a lot of great comment about the school. Besides, my teacher for my CNA class (certified Nursing assistant) went there for nursing, when I told her I got accepted at LIU for “med technology” but I will change for nursing next year, she was happy and she told me to go for it, she also told me, it’s not a cheap school, I smiled and I replied I know. And also My manager at work told me the same, he said he was there for business major and he met his wife that was studied nursing at the time; I also got my classmate from medical assistant school attending at liu as well. I did my research, so I was set, so I applied and I got accepted I am a really hesitant person. I always make sure I think about everything carefully before I make a decision. For example, I’ve been thinking about college ever since I come to United stated, but my financial wasn’t stable.so it scared me, I wanted to make sure that I was ready. Then I learned that, “you’d never be ready if you ever try” with that in mind I said to myself, try or take a chance So I’d gone from thinking...
