...Graduate Finance 29 August 2012 2012 Drought Economic Impact The persistent heat and drought seem to be the only topic of discussion lately as the rain starved fields beg for some watery relief. Increasing food prices and fuel costs will soon be joining the ever important conversation as the worst drought in 50 years persists, thus having a very negative impact on the already sluggish economy. In my paper, I will discuss some of the economic impact the drought is having on consumers, farmers and ranchers; also what actions the Obama administration will take in order to ease fears for all those involved. The drought has hit corn especially hard during the ever important pollination process thus causing the growing cycle to be very much disrupted. However soybeans which mature later in the season should be better off than corn, although prices are expected to increase for both. Futures prices for corn have increased 60 percent, wheat is up to 41percent and soybeans have risen 24 percent (Lempert).Corn is the biggest U.S. crop, valued at $76.5 billion in 2011, followed by soybeans at $35.8 billion, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (Lempert). It is crisis such as this which reminds the consumers how important and fragile American’s farming industry is. In fact about 60 percent of U.S. farmland and more than one half of American counties have been affected by the drought and are currently designated drought disaster areas (Lempert)...

...Tiffany Fong Period 2 Gibson Discussion Question #1 When analyzing Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe with Giorgione/Titian's Pastoral Symphony, one can see many similarities and differences. When Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe was first introduced in 1863, it was placed under the title of Le Bain at the Salon des Refusés and was the central attraction of laughter and outrage. Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe depicts two nude women and two clothed men having a picnic. The painting presents problems for the viewer as they are forced to question the morality of the scene, whether to consider the nude, naked in a public place and exhibited to the public or if they are an active partner. Even though the intended reaction to the picture is unclear, the presence of the nude controls the viewer's emotional response. The presentation of the figures in soft focus and broadly painted landscape promoted severe criticism. Also, the loose manner of painting contradicts the crisp forms with the bright clothes and food in the left corner. In the main figures, there are only a few lights and darks, which makes them distinctive from the background. On the contrary, the painting of Titian's Pastoral Symphony, both mysterious in meaning and authorship, has been known as one of the most influential paintings of the nineteenth century. The main figures are two men who are seated on the grass against a vast countryside setting. Titian had been interested on landscapes in his early career, and...

...The first Study Habits Inventory (SHI) was prepared in 1933 by Wrenn, with a view to survey this feature among students. In 1935 research workers interested in the improvement of study habits, they paid attention to the discovery of effective study techniques and tried to improve study skills and habits of work through ‘how to study’ courses and other systematic procedures. Cuff (1937) carefully derived study-habits inventory and found that it aids in finding the pupils in need of special guidance and helps to identify remedial work for the good and bad study habits of individual cases. Brown and Holtzman (1955) constructed a questionnaire to survey students ‘study habits', as well as their attitudes and motivation towards academic work. Items were compiled from group interviews with good and poor students, existing inventories on study habits, studies using observational and interview techniques and reports on related experiments in the field of learning. Scoring keys based on validity studies in ten colleges were developed. Study habits basically consist of effective methods of study (Sorenson, 1954). Study is the total of all the habits, determined purposes and enforced practices that the individual uses in order to learn. Study is hard work, no easy substitute is available (Armstrong, 1956), Brown and Holtzman (1956) and Srivastava (1967) point out that for good academic success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Some reports stress that certain personality characteristics...

...Everyone has their own version of a good and bad trip. It’s always either you had a good trip or a bad trip, but never both. If you ever experience both, you have a bittersweet taste, kind of like that sweet and sour candy some of us used to eat as a kid that would make your mouth pucker uncontrollably. On this adventure, I had the pleasure of experiencing the good and bad, the fun and boredom, the gain of comrades and the loss of a friend. Dating all the way back to March of 2008, my unit was preparing to hop on our one way ticket to the sand infested countries of the Middle East. Everyone began making their final calls before we got the command to move out. I was alone at the time. Single and all my family immediate family being in the States, and no way of reaching out to them, I was left to wonder, worry, and drive myself practically insane. “You’re gonna be fine,” I kept telling myself all the way to Kuwait. Fast forward to a couple months later, because Kuwait was uneventful and boring as ever, except for the fact that is was hotter than a ghost pepper there. The flight to Iraq was by far the worse that I have ever experienced in my (at the time) 19 years of being alive. For those who know nothing about combat landing, this is where the pilot circles and drops altitude simultaneously to avoid any type of attack, such as small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), or anything that can cause damage to the plane or the personnel on the flight. When they initiated this...

...FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Operation Desert Storm saw the first female aviator in battle when Maj. Marie T. Rossi took the driver’s seat flying fuel and ammunition to the soldiers crossing into enemy territory. Rossi lost her life when her CH-47 Chinook helicopter went down on March 1, 1991. Her headstone reads, “The first female commander to fly into battle.” she certainly was not the last. Today, women of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade continue changing the face of the battlefield by joining the fight as combat aviators, crew chiefs, and helicopter mechanics, showcasing their skills and leadership abilities. Lt. Col. Gail E. Atkins, commander, 122nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd CAB, is no stranger to the changing role of women in combat aviation. The Westchester, Pa., native has served for almost 18 years as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot. “We are seeing an evolution with regard to women in combat roles, in how our skills have evolved and how we are exploiting those skills,” Atkins said. “In aviation, we went through this back in 93’, when the military opened up attack aviation to women, so we are 15 years ahead of the curve in aviation compared to where our other branches are.” Throughout her career, Atkins has seen an increase in number of women who serve alongside her. “I have an all female staff right now and it’s just the way it has worked out. But I think it is indicative of the number of women who are joining the service,” Atkins said. Other women...

...MODERN AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY JULY 27, 2015 There have been many innovations developed as a result of World War Two (WWII). Many of those innovations and technologies were pushed forward in to high gear because of the need created by warfare. All types of items such as a proximity fuse (used to detonate bombs & Anti-Aircraft shells), significant advances in tanks, amphibious mobile troop carriers (DUKW), new designed aircraft carriers took over the old World War One battleships, were a direct product from the conflict. The development of the RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging) played a crucial role during the Battle of Britain in World War Two for the British air forces. At a time where the British only had available to them a total of 800 aircraft to try to hold back the German in which had an air force with over 3,000 planes at their ready. The use of Radar gave the British the upper hand by allow them to be able to detect the German aircraft while they were still fifty to sixty miles away. This enabled the British to only permit a limited amount of forces to fight the Germans as the approached knowing the direction, altitude, and speed of the planes as they came. In the great depths of the sea, the German U-boat had become quiet the force that was wreaking havoc on the Allied Naval ships. The U.S. Navy not only had the use of SONAR (SOund Navigating And Ranging) but the development of Bearing Deviation Indicator (BDI) was a useful tool in adding the sonar equipment...

...The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is a heavy bomber designed by Boeing that was flown primarily by the United States in World War II and during the Korean War. It has four 2,200-horsepower Wright Double Cyclone engines. This bomber has a wingspan of 141 feet 3 inches, and is 99 feet in length. It has a gross weight of 105,000 pounds (140,000 pounds postwar), an empty weight of 69,610 pounds. The B-29 has a top speed of 365 miles per hour, and a cruising speed of 220 miles per hour. It was also armed with twelve .50-caliber machine guns, one 20 mm cannon, a 20,000-pound bomb load, and carried a crew of ten. The first prototype made its maiden flight from Boeing Field in Seattle, WA on September 21, 1942. In the beginning, manufacturing an airworthy B-29 Superfortress proved to be a difficult task. Changes to the production craft came so often and so quickly that in early 1944, B-29’s flew from the production lines directly to United States Air Force modification depots for extensive rebuilds, and to incorporate the latest changes. By the end of 1943, just over 100 B-29’s were delivered, and only fifteen percent were airworthy. General Hap Arnold had a plan to resolve the problem, with production personnel being sent from the factories to the modification centers to speed modification. 150 aircraft were airworthy six weeks. The B-29 Superfortress revolutionized World War II-era bombers, enabling long-range missions over Japan. The "super bomber" could carry more payload and fly...

...What is your position on our current global situation? My position in our environment is very high because as a teen I don’t know the changes that are happening in the world unless I am told that what us teens are doing to our planet is killing it slowly. In my essay I will include Economic, Political, and Environmental changes that us humans are doing to our planet. I view earth as a home because without earth where would we live and where would breath, being on earth is good but it’s also bad because we are not taking care of our planet like we’re supposed to and if we don’t take care of the planet it will die and there would be no life living anymore. My role locally is important because I can make a huge difference if I just speak up, but my role globally well there is a tremendous difference there because I will not be able to the word out quickly enough because I’m just another teen living on this earth. An increase in population makes excessive demands on natural resources and increases the demand on agriculture and livestock, using chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides to increase production is actually polluting the air, soil, and water with toxic chemicals. Human population is growing like never before, the list of problems this is causing, or at least complicating is a long one. It includes shortages of all our resources, war and social conflict, limit, personal freedom overcoming health and survival for other...

...island near Guam is emerging as one of the Air Force’s backup landing bases. On February 10, the flying branch announced that it selected Tinian as a divert airfield “in the event access to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, or other western Pacific locations is limited or denied.” In the Pentagon’s 2017 budget request, it asked for $9 million to buy 17.5 acres of land “in support of divert activities and exercise initiatives,” the Saipan Tribune reported. In peacetime, the expanded Tinian airfield will host “up to 12 tanker aircraft and associated support personnel for divert operations,” according to the Air Force. Tinian is now a sleepy place. During World War II, the 4th and 2nd Marine Divisions captured the island, which later based the B-29 Superfortresses Enola Gay and Bockscar which took off from Tinian’s North Field and dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. An arsenal during the war, most of its airstrips are now abandoned and unused. The island’s other former air base, West Field, is a small, neglected international airport. The Air Force first wanted Saipan for its...
