...Everyone has their own version of a good and bad trip. It’s always either you had a good trip or a bad trip, but never both. If you ever experience both, you have a bittersweet taste, kind of like that sweet and sour candy some of us used to eat as a kid that would make your mouth pucker uncontrollably. On this adventure, I had the pleasure of experiencing the good and bad, the fun and boredom, the gain of comrades and the loss of a friend. Dating all the way back to March of 2008, my unit was preparing to hop on our one way ticket to the sand infested countries of the Middle East. Everyone began making their final calls before we got the command to move out. I was alone at the time. Single and all my family immediate family being in the States, and no way of reaching out to them, I was left to wonder, worry, and drive myself practically insane. “You’re gonna be fine,” I kept telling myself all the way to Kuwait. Fast forward to a couple months later, because Kuwait was uneventful and boring as ever, except for the fact that is was hotter than a ghost pepper there. The flight to Iraq was by far the worse that I have ever experienced in my (at the time) 19 years of being alive. For those who know nothing about combat landing, this is where the pilot circles and drops altitude simultaneously to avoid any type of attack, such as small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), or anything that can cause damage to the plane or the personnel on the flight. When they initiated this...

...FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Operation Desert Storm saw the first female aviator in battle when Maj. Marie T. Rossi took the driver’s seat flying fuel and ammunition to the soldiers crossing into enemy territory. Rossi lost her life when her CH-47 Chinook helicopter went down on March 1, 1991. Her headstone reads, “The first female commander to fly into battle.” she certainly was not the last. Today, women of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade continue changing the face of the battlefield by joining the fight as combat aviators, crew chiefs, and helicopter mechanics, showcasing their skills and leadership abilities. Lt. Col. Gail E. Atkins, commander, 122nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd CAB, is no stranger to the changing role of women in combat aviation. The Westchester, Pa., native has served for almost 18 years as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot. “We are seeing an evolution with regard to women in combat roles, in how our skills have evolved and how we are exploiting those skills,” Atkins said. “In aviation, we went through this back in 93’, when the military opened up attack aviation to women, so we are 15 years ahead of the curve in aviation compared to where our other branches are.” Throughout her career, Atkins has seen an increase in number of women who serve alongside her. “I have an all female staff right now and it’s just the way it has worked out. But I think it is indicative of the number of women who are joining the service,” Atkins said. Other women...

A 3,000-pound capacity winch is mounted on the floor in the right-hand forward bulkhead. The winch has 150 feet of cable and can winch up to 12,000 pounds of cargo with the aid of snatch blocks. In addition, an internal cargo-handling system with rollers can be installed in the CH-47D model cargo compartment. (4) The cargo compartment floor rests on rub-ber vibration isolators. The floor has a maximum load limit of 300 psf. The treadway aft of station 160 will withstand a wheel load of 2,500 pounds. The remaining treadway area will withstand a wheel load of 1,000 pounds. When used for additional cargo space, the ramp must be positioned level with the a. The CH-47 (Chinook) aircraft is a twin-tur-bine-engine, tandem-rotor helicopter (Figure 1-11).

...Data Mining with R: learning by case studies Luis Torgo LIACC-FEP, University of Porto R. Campo Alegre, 823 - 4150 Porto, Portugal email: ltorgo@liacc.up.pt http://www.liacc.up.pt/∼ltorgo May 22, 2003 Preface The main goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the use of R as a tool for performing data mining. R is a freely downloadable1 language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. Its capabilities and the large set of available packages make this tool an excellent alternative to the existing (and expensive!) data mining tools. One of the key issues in data mining is size. A typical data mining problem involves a large database from where one seeks to extract useful knowledge. In this book we will use MySQL as the core database management system. MySQL is also freely available2 for several computer platforms. This means that you will be able to perform “serious” data mining without having to pay any money at all. Moreover, we hope to show you that this comes with no compromise in the quality of the obtained solutions. Expensive tools do not necessarily mean better tools! R together with MySQL form a pair very hard to beat as long as you are willing to spend some time learning how to use them. We think that it is worthwhile, and we hope that you are convinced as well at the end of reading this book. The goal of this book is not to describe all facets of data mining processes. Many books exist that cover this area. Instead we propose to introduce...
