Chad's Creative Concepts has grown substantially and has caused significant problems between standardized furniture and specialty designed furniture production. The problems concern external operations and internal operations of manufacturing. Chad's Creative Concepts has to set priorities to schedule different orders. Orders for low running and high running furniture pieces are being accepted because sales have increased. Chad's Creative Concepts has not increased the amount of equipment or capacity needed to handle the business growth. Low running and high running furniture pieces are now competing for the same manufacturing capacity. Chad's Creative Concepts has to emphasize the importance of on time delivery and manufacturing costs. Low running furniture pieces and high running furniture piece have a different set of priorities. Sales and marketing have not considered the conflict between dedicating equipment to standardized pieces and specialty equipment for custom pieces. Producing standard furniture pieces has created significant growth for the company. The growth has also caused the cost of inventory and operational costs to increase...

...To: Chad Thomas, President, Chad’s Creative Concepts From: Consultant Background Chad’s Creative Concepts located on the banks of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio, designs and manufactures wood furniture. The company developed a solid reputation for creative designs and high-quality workmanship. They focused entirely on custom made furniture. Their customers specify the kind of wood that’s used to create the pieces they want. As the company’s reputation grew and sales increased, the Chad’s Creative Concepts began to sell some of its more popular pieces to retail furniture stores. This has allowed the company to produce a more standard line of furniture. These buyers however, are much more price-sensitive and impose a more stringent delivery requirement. Over the past few months sales for the standard line furniture has increased, however custom made furniture has continued to dominate their sales. Although the company’s sales for the standard line has increased, scheduling trade-offs have to be made to meet the demand of the custom made products because of the higher profit margin from the custom sales. This has led to a delay in shipping of the standard line furniture, a lack of warehouse space and increased lead times for the standard line of furniture. Analysis Significant issues have been identified with the company’s standard line of furniture. Although sales have increased, the custom made line has taken precedence, leading to customers who are not able to...

...Chads Creative Concepts Harmanpreet Singh 500284928 Question 1 During the course of a regular business day, Chad Thomas makes many decisions in order for his company to run effectively. On a daily basis Chad must decide which production type he will focus on for the day. Since he produces two lines of furniture, standard and custom, he must decide which one gets the priority when both orders need to be completed. Since he usually bases his decisions based on profits, the custom line usually gets completed first. Deciding which product to produce satisfies the order fulfillment process, which is core to effective daily operations. In order to meet the demand, Chad also needs to allocate machine hours for each production type. Since both lines require the same machines it’s a constant balancing act. Chad also takes his employee hours into consideration because his employees are all specialized in different aspects of the manufacturing process. Chad preforms supplier relationship process duties because he need’s to order specific materials for the customized pieces from his suppliers. In order to Chad to be effective over the long run he must reduce the lead times on both the custom and standard line of furniture. With the increase in volume, Chad finds it difficult to meet the promised delivery dates for both custom and standard line. Increased lead times has had a ripple effect throughout the company. Increased lead times results in added costs such as storage and inapt...

...Chapter 1 Competing with Operations DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Answering this question demonstrates that processes underlie all of our jobs. What might be surprising is how many students would put their job in the category of “other,” suggesting that many jobs do not fall neatly into any one functional area. Perhaps many in the “other” category might best be called “operations” on further reflection. Customers, both internal and external, are part of each process, and the goal is to manage the processes to add the most value for them. 2. Amazon.com offers a very broad range of services and products at competitive prices. Its competitive priorities would include fast delivery time, on-time delivery, customization, variety and low-cost operations. As a business, Amazon.com is actually assembling a customized basket of goods that must be delivered in a short window of time in a dependable fashion. Low-cost operations are needed to remain competitive. To remain in business, Amazon.com needs to maintain high volumes of traffic. Operations strategy must focus on stock availability and quick, economical, and dependable delivery. 3. The hospital’s commitment to provide attention to patients arriving to the emergency unit in less than 15 minutes and never to turn away patients who need to be hospitalized implies that the facility must be designed to have extra capacity in both beds and emergency room facilities. It must plan on having extra personnel...

...Foreign Language Annals Á vol. 43, No. 1 27 Language-Learning Motivation During Short-Term Study Abroad: An Activity Theory Perspective Heather Willis Allen University of Miami Abstract: This study investigated the development of language-learning motivation during short-term study abroad (SA) for six intermediate-level students of French. Taking an activity theory perspective, findings demonstrated that one of two orientations motivated participants to study or continue studying French at the college level: linguistic motives or career-oriented motives. The choice to study abroad was seen as either a critical step to achieving fluency or a means of travel and cultural learning. Enhanced language-learning motivation emerged to varying degrees for participants with linguistically oriented motives for learning French who viewed SA as a languagelearning experience but not for participants with primarily pragmatic reasons for learning French and participating in SA. Implications of the study include the need for curricular intervention in student learning abroad. Key words: French, activity theory, learning motivation, second language learning, self-regulation, study abroad Introduction From the 1960s through the mid-1990s, research on study abroad (SA) largely supported the notion that it is an ideal means of learning a foreign language. Moreover, foreign language professionals often impart this view to students, typically based on their own successful if not life-transforming...

...Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis For Billy Fitzgerald I can still hear him shouting at me Lately in a wreck of a Californian ship, one of the passengers fastened a belt about him with two hundred pounds of gold in it, with which he was found afterwards at the bottom. Now, as he was sinking-had he the gold? or the gold him? —John Ruskin, Unto This Last Preface I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? For more than a decade the people who run professional baseball have argued that the game was ceasing to be an athletic competition and becoming a financial one. The gap between rich and poor in baseball was far greater than in any other professional sport, and widening rapidly. At the opening of the 2002 season, the richest team, the New York Yankees, had a payroll of $126 million while the two poorest teams, the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had payrolls of less than a third of that, about $40 million. A decade before, the highest payroll...
