...Professor Rowe ENGL-1302-15 10 December 2012 Is college a good idea for some exceptional students? College education is a life experience that provides students with knowledge and skills to face challenges ahead in life. It is an extremely important form of education though it may seem as though college is not worth the stress and difficulty because several college dropouts such as Joel Osteen, LeBron James, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs were successful in their endeavors to achieve their goals. In the article Is College worth it?, Robert Hoggard states: College prepares students for determination and responsibility although one can never truly understand the definition of determination without finishing college because studying and finishing assignments on time takes innate will power that many people who opt-out of college do not possess (Hoggard). His views on college are extremely appropriate as by attending college, students learn to develop their will power to help them focus on their perspectives and goals. Emily Wamstker shares her views on college in her article, College Is Very Much Worth It, by saying, “The data make clear that getting a college education is still a good idea -- college graduates earn more, and are more likely to have a job in the first place -- and is especially important for some Americans” (Wamstker). By attending college, students can be confident of acquiring a job. Many college dropouts struggle making low wages because they...

...Impact of stress on students learning Stress is any situation that evokes negative thoughts and feelings in a person. The same situation is not evocative or stressful for all people, and all people do not experience the same negative thoughts and feelings when stressed. One model that is useful in understanding stress among students is the person-environmental model. According to one variation of this model, stressful events can be appraised by an individual as "challenging" or "threatening". When students appraise their education as a challenge, stress can bring them a sense of competence and an increased capacity to learn. When education is seen as a threat, however, stress can elicit feelings of helplessness and a foreboding sense of loss. A critical issue concerning stress among students is its effect on learning. The Yerkes-Dodson law (1908) postulates that individuals under low and high stress learn the least and that those under moderate stress learn the most. A field study and laboratory tests support the notion that excessive stress is harmful to students' performance. Mechanisms that explain why students perform badly under stress include "hypervigilance" (excessive alertness to a stressful situation resulting in panic--for example, over studying for an exam) and "premature closure" (quickly choosing a solution to end a stressful situation--for example, rushing through an exam). WHAT IS STRESSFUL FOR UNDERGRADUATES? Students react to college in a variety of...

Ivitte shared her story about being an undocumented students along with a film that she worked on that shared the stories of other undocumented students. The film, DREAMers Among US was the story of six undocumented teenagers and their struggles of their future plans. Many of them came to to United States at a very young age because their parents were told there would have a better future here with more opportunities. Something that really stuck with me is when one of the young men interviewed shared how he worked very hard in high school to graduate in the top 10% of the class then he was heart broken when he learned that he could not afford college. He worked intensely to graduate in the top ten percent of his class just to be told he cannot afford college. Like him, the other young adults in the film had similar experiences. One young woman said that...

...almost became a trend in the teenage world. More often, relationship status becomes a statement in the popularity of a person, and the aliveness of one’s life. College life may serve as a challenging chapter of life to every student. College used to face different forms of life, like different struggles to face in a day to day basis. This is the age where the transitional phase in every student happens, in which time management is hard to handle. Many college students are involved in a romantic relationship, but involvement to this may just cause more stressors to handle. Studying is toxic and very exhausting, sometimes escaping from stress and relaxation is what a student is looking for. Teenagers look for moments where they can feel free and love. The feeling of love remedies the toxicity of what a student is experiencing. It lets a person escape from reality and live by its fantasy. But imagination just only brings happiness; people still live in reality thus resulting to poor performance. Thus, it definitely depends on the person who’s handling it. According to the study made by Matthew Kopfler, it says that, “Students in relationships tend to have a higher stress level when meeting deadlines on assignments and completing school work, but the study also stated that it depends on the student.” Ortigue (2010) explained that, “The findings have major implications for neuroscience and mental health research because when love doesn’t work out, it can...

...lives. For example, the parent regularly calls the dean of students to ask about a child’s academic performance and selecting their preferred classes. These parents like to micro-manage every aspect of their children’s lives including school, work, and relationships. In this way, the child has no alone time and cannot learn to solve problems that arise in life. Most people think that parents should allow their children to have difficulties when they are children. Through facing challenging situations, they learn to deal with hardships and to develop the internal stamina needed to handle similar situations in the future. Although some people think, that helicopter parenting is beneficial in some cases, the negative effects far outweigh the purported benefits. As with any other controversial topic, helicopter parenting has its disadvantages and advantages. On one hand, helicopter parents want the best for their children and some even manage to help the children in their endeavors (Jayson para3). Children with helicopter parents usually have a close bond with their parents even during their adulthood. Additionally, helicopter parents tend to know where their children are at all times that provide a useful security consideration. In academic matters, college students with mildly involved parents have higher academic performance than their peers who have no parental involvement. An NSSE survey on the issue concluded that students who had such parents tended to have “higher levels of engagement...

...At a young age, I lost my mother, who was about to finish college, due to cancer. Knowing that my mother’s dream is for all of her children to finish college, something inside of me made me value academics more. After graduating from high school in the Philippines, we moved to the United States of America in 2013. When I started community college, the tuition and expenses stunned me. I always wanted to earn a baccalaureate degree, but I had the idea that I will never be able to attend a four-year college or university much less go to dental school because of our financial situation. Despite what I’ve thought, I was still persistent to make the most of my community college years. I joined Phi Theta Kappa, and it completely changed my life. I...

...social order is a tiered social order. It is based on authority, hierarchy, and the differential assignment of value to human individuals (i.e., some individuals like CEOs and presidents are worth more than others). Within this context, individuals receive differential socialization. Those born into the lower tiers receive a socialization process geared to fitting them into the low level, wage based sectors of The System. Those born into the higher tiers receive specialized education designed to train them as low level managers, as corporate or political rulers, etc. There are a number of things that can affect an individual’s socialization process. The amount of impact that each of the agents has on an individual will depend on the situation, the individuals experiences, and the stage of life the individual is in. Family First...

...You and What Are You Doing Here?” by Dr. Mark Edmundson published on the 74th issue of The Oxford American Magazine, many compelling points are taken into account to describe his view on education. He starts off by commending his main target audience – the incoming students as they take on a new adventure and map out their educational path during the early stages of college. He launches on his concept that university education is not solely a stepping stone towards an established profession, rather an arena in which we work on those philosophical questions such as ‘Who are you?’ and ‘What are you doing here?’ in order to eschew the wrong course of life. Edmundson also challenges the audience to analyze what college education really offers to them, arguing that the sole purpose of the subject should be self-fulfillment and not just to cultivate knowledge but more importantly to defy the standards and morals it presents to them. He advocates that we should live a more purposeful life by pursuing what we desire the most to obtain spiritual fulfillment rather than monetary. The author promulgates a variety of propositions on the subject but mainly, his key objective is to intensify the mindset of college students in order to define the true significance of higher learning. Today’s education is evolving frantically and whoever thinks that the subject can be substantiated by a piece of paper has been misrepresented by their own judgment. He asserts that to get an education, one...

Most importantly, the financing of most student’s post-secondary education tuition has become difficult in today’s economy due to the costs. According to American Progress, “a recent study by Georgetown University’s Center on education and workforce found that at current levels of production, the U.S. economy will have a shortfall of five million college-educated workers by 2020.” (Bergeron & Martin). This shows that the cost expense of college causes five million college educated workers to decrease. Five million people who do not have a post-secondary degree due...
