...Making a Tutu Chandelier Having daughters can be a wonderful learning experience. Children are always coming up with new things to create. One day in our quest for new ideas for arts and crafts day, my girls and I came across an interesting picture of a tutu chandelier. The instructions seemed simple enough so we decided to try it out. We were so pleased with the outcome that I thought it would be a good idea to share with others. To complete this project you will first need to gather all your materials. * A solid ring (I got mine for $2.30 at Hobby Lobby) * 6 inch spool of tulle * lace or decor ribbon for the outside of the ring * 8 flowers you can pop the heads off of * spool of beads for the droop * hanging bead string for the middle * ribbon to hang the chandelier * hot glue gun * hot glue sticks * scissors First lay out four ribbons on the four sides of your ring. After this, use the hot glue gun to glue the ribbons onto the ring near the top, bottom and both sides. This is what you will use to hang your tutu chandelier, so make sure they are as long or short as you need them from the destination, leaving a little room for trimming and error of course. The next step in the process is to cut all your tulle pieces out evenly. For this step, feel free to use the entire spool of tulle. Cut the pieces at about 12 inches per length. Then add to the ring in a standard no sew tutu knot. After, from the inside of the ring, add...

...freedom in disguise. “Is the cult of television a prison or is it freedom? Theoretically it is freedom because, if you’ve got a satellite, you can watch channels from all over the world. But in fact you immediately have to buy all sorts of gadgets to go with the television...while theoretically giving yourself the freedom of watching various things you’re also falling into a trap with this gadget.” (Kieslowski on Kieslowski, 1993, Page 213) Blue Beads She leaves her house to move to a new apartment leaving behind all her property and belongings. However, she takes a chandelier with blue beads on it which in its suggestion seems to be one of her daughter’s belongings. The chandelier becomes an object in her new place as the mark from her recent inflictions. She also looks through the beads when she first spots Lucille going to her neighbour’s house in the middle of the night. She would later look at the chandelier and tell Julie that she used to own something similar. In her reluctance, Julie, at this point lets Lucille in and connects to her situation. She realises that Lucille also comes from a past that she is trying to escape (of an abusive father) and is seeking her version of liberty in the work that she does. The delicate form of the glass beads strung together reflect her vulnerabilites and the connection that she develops with Lucille through it. 6...

...Lighting Lighting is an essential aspect of home furnishings that also makes interiors more pleasant and allows tasks and activities to be completed much more easily. Lighting energy and therefore, consumer cost, is a necessary consideration. Lamp is the technical term for what we call commonly a light bulb. A luminaire is the technical term for what is commonly called a lamp or fixture, which is a complete lighting unit. It includes the lamp holder, power connection, and any internal devices such as reflectors. Purposes of Lighting The purposes of residential lighting are: 1. Ambient lighting- needed to perform routine activities 2. Task lighting- needed to perform specific tasks such as reading 3. Decorative lighting- needed to create an aesthetically pleasing environment All three types of lighting are frequently combined in a space, and their purposes may overlap as required by the time of day or the uses of the room. Ambient Lighting- is also referred to as general lighting. It provides uniform light for general purposes but not enough for specific tasks. Ambient light can be direct or indirect. Direct- when direct light is used, nearly 90-100 percent of the light is directed toward the surface to be lit. The direct light shines directly downward from the luminaire. Downlights are fixtures that are installed on the ceiling or wall to cast light below. If...

...was called one when his teacher praised him for his intelligence. It is a rare animal and symbolizes that Balram is different from all the other servants in the society. He was one of the only ones who had the courage to climb up the hierarchy regardless to all the sacrifices he made. • Chicken Coop The Chicken Coop is the analogy Balram uses for the social situation in India. The lower class people are the chicken in the coop, kept in line by their masters and powerless to change or to acquire freedom. One by one as their own kind dies, they just sit and do nothing even though it is their turn next. • Chandelier The chandelier symbolizes "Light", the things Balram strive for in his life. It seems out of place in his small apartment, just as how living a rich lifestyle does not fit Balram as he comes from the Darkness. However, he treasures and admires the chandelier anyways just like how he does not regret breaking out of his caste. ...

...Aiden booted the door and watched as it crumpled like paper. His foot had caught a splinter, but his brain eluded the pain entirely; it could only register the reeking musk of cocktailed bourbon and baked cigars. “Junkies…,” he murmured, eyes trailing forward. The hall ahead was poorly lit. A pitiful chandelier was suspended from the ceiling and was flickering desperately, only barely exposing the writing on decrepit walls beside it. He studied it closely. Graffiti had been interesting to him, especially as a child – acts of self-reliant rebellion and courageous nonconformity. Seeing it poorly plastered onto chipped concrete in a crackhead’s haven made it seem so much less intriguing. A sudden, fiery sensation in his gums...

...on what is going on in the middle of the room. It also makes the setting seem that much more intimate and close, considering it’s been speculated that the event that is taking place in the painting is a wedding. Another interesting element of art that van Eyck used was implied line. Most of the lines in the portrait are vertical; the straight up and down position of Arnolfini’s hand, the dogs tail, the lights on the chandelier, the bed posts and drapery, the wrinkles in the clothes that the couple is wearing. Color is also an element of art that van Eyck expresses in this work. The dull hues add on to the seriousness of the event that is happening. If van Eyck had used brighter colors, it would take away from the purpose of his painting by giving the viewers distractions. I also believe that the particular colors he used to depict Arnolfini and his wife are a symbol of their wealth and status. It has been said that Arnolfini was a prosperous merchant, hence the big hat Arnolfini is wearing, the fur lining both of their clothes, the expensive looking chandelier, stained glass window, the big mirror, and the furniture. ...

...Cultural Event: Morse Museum For my cultural event, I attended the Morse Museum in Winter Park. At first I did not know what to expect, I have passed by this museum plenty of time but never went in. I was pleasantly surprised by what I discovered in this quaint museum down Park Avenue. My friend and I spent about an hour roaming throughout the rooms of the stained glass covered walls, immaculate paintings and other types of glass work. First walking in we were greeted by these two kind women who handed us pamphlets and a map of the museum. They suggested we watch a film about the history about the glass and painting we were about to see. After watching the film, we wandered into a vibrant orange room filled with stained glass lamps, each...

...One of the first things that you notice when you look at the painting is that the woman seems as she might be pregnant based on her slightly rounded area in her midsection. They seem to be wearing very nice and heavy clothing that you can notice by the furs that they are wearing. The man is wearing very dark clothes and an extremely large hat while the woman is wearing a white headdress, bright green and blues to go along with her furs. She also seems to be wearing jewelry on her wrists and, fingers, and around her neck. There are many other items that are placed around the room such as sandals, a chandelier, fruits that resemble oranges, the mirror and a very large and elegant bed. They also seem to have a small dog in the foreground of the...

...be built. Sorolla designed the building and the gardens out front, which were inspired by the gardens at the Alhambra. Inside, the home was spectacular. Every room had extremely tall ceilings, and in his work studio, the ceiling had panels that could control the amount of light that was allowed in. The studio also contained many souvenirs that Sorolla collected, and a signed picture of the Kings of Spain. After the studio, we entered the main living space of the house with a dining room and living room. Both spaces were decorated beautifully with white marble and intricate tile work. The last part of the home that I found interesting were the two Tiffany chandeliers that Sorolla owned. We learned that Sorolla had spent time in New York City, and he befriended a member of the Tiffany family, so the gifted him with two chandeliers. For myself, it was extremely interesting to see and learn about Sorolla’s home because it was designed by him, and it was where he spent a majority of his time. Overall, Sorolla painted beautiful, picturesque, intricate, portraits and beach landscapes. At the beginning, I shared how I did not know who Sollora was; however, after seeing his incredible paintings, he is now considered one of my favorite...

Balram Halwai- Protagonist or Mouthpiece? Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger’ is an epistolary novel consisting of a series of letters written by Balram Halwai, an entrepreneur who owns a taxi driving company, for the Chinese Premier, when he visits Bangalore. It also highlights the individual’s aspiration to get out of the Darkness of his life. In order to explore this issue further, the following research question is framed- “Is Balram Halwai is a rounded character or is he the mouthpiece of the author?” In an attempt to answer this question an in depth analysis of the novel was done.
