Trade increases a country’s total output, and offers greater variety and lower prices to consumers. Nations restrict international trade to help their own economies and to protect their domestic companies from competition with foreign rivals. They do this by imposing taxes, surcharges, tariffs, quotas, embargoes, and sanctions on the goods of foreign companies. Groups of nations form trading blocs to protect their own trade interests (EU, ASEAN, NAFTA, and Mercosur). International business activities can include importing, exporting, licensing, franchising, strategic alliances, joint ventures, and foreign direct investment (FDI). Outline I. ...Positions on the Soccer Field There are 11 positions on the soccer field, but they always fall into four broad categories. Even in smaller games, the number of players in each category may change, but by and large, the positions do not. The Goalkeeper The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use his hands and that can only occur within the confines of the penalty area. There are never more that two goalkeepers on the field at any time — one on each team. The goalkeeper’s uniform is different from the rest of his team’s to make it obvious which player may use his hands. The jersey, often with long sleeves, is colored to clash with the others. And since the 1970s, goalkeepers have worn gloves to both protect their hands and enhance their grip on the ball. Some of the best goalkeepers in the world are Gianluigi Buffon of Italy and Iker Casillas of Spain. The Defenders A defender’s primary duty is to win back the ball from the opposition and prevent them from scoring. Teams play with anywhere from three to five at the back and each member of the defense tends to have a different, yet equally important duty. The defenders stationed in the center of the back line (known as central defenders or center backs) tend to be some of the taller and stronger members of the team since they so frequently have to win the ball in the air. They go forward very little, except on set pieces, and hold a position of great responsibility. The defenders on the flanks (known as wingbacks...

...BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE GLOBAL LEADER (Chapter 30 of "Coaching for Leadership" Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer, 2000) Maya Hu-Chan, Jeremy Solomons, and Carlos E. Marin “To lead the people, walk behind them” (Lao-Tzu) “In a beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities. In an expert’s there are none.” (Zen Master Suzuki Roshi) Nature versus Nurture Although there may never be a definitive answer to the nature versus nurture question, most people will agree that no amount of nurturing can make someone into a global leader if he or she does not have a fundamental desire, passion, and talent to be one. And no potential leader, however naturally gifted he or she may be, can become fully realized without a tremendous amount of nurturing. Throughout childhood and adolescence, even the divinely reincarnated Dalai Lama had to undergo intense and lengthy preparation for his weighty role as the spiritual leader of Tibet. But the preparation does not stop at the onset of adulthood; in some ways, it is only just starting. Potential global leaders must continue their formal education by expanding their theoretical and technical knowledge in various arenas of higher learning, but they must also begin to live the reality of being a global leader through practical experience, particularly traveling, living and working in cultures and countries that are not familiar to them. 1 Are global leaders born? Or are they made? Is global leadership an innate competency? Or is it an acquired skill, learned...

...TEACHER HISTORICAL INFORMATION I’ve had 3 years teaching experience in the public school setting all of which have taken place at the middle school level, more specifically grades sixth and seventh. I began my teaching career as a physical education and health teacher, but I took and passed the Praxis II for Middle School Level Core Content Knowledge; this along with passing an Arkansas History collegiate course allowed me to add fourth through eighth grade mathematics, science, literature, and social studies to my teaching license. About three weeks into my first year teaching I was asked if I would be willing to teach science in addition to physical education to which I agreed. Since then I’ve either taught exclusively seventh and eighth grade science or a combination of physical education and science classes at said level. I also was the head coach for eighth grade girls sports and assistant for seventh grade girls sports which include: volleyball, basketball, and track and field. For this project I chose to concentrate on the interactions taking place in the science classroom setting as I feel it provides a more appropriate backdrop for this project. I feel like one of the more important qualities in both my personal and professional life is my ability to easily learn and process new information. This quality helped me immensely when I began teaching science because I had very little experience teaching in the classroom setting (just a semester of student teaching health)...

...Richard Attias Become a fan Email The Development Factor: The Challenge of Sport in the 21st Century Posted: 10/21/2014 8:39 am EDT Updated: 10/29/2014 9:59 Sport occupies a peculiar place in world dynamics in that it surpasses the limitations of geographical boundaries and social classes. Still, a gap remains between developed and developing nations when it comes to sport. In the industrialized world, sport as an economic sector represents approximately 2% of GDP. For developing economies, though, the challenge remains making sport a factor of economic development, and a driver for social change, so it benefits all citizens in the long term. UNESCO's 1978 International Charter of Physical Education and Sport classified sport as "a fundamental right for all." But the low place sport occupies in the developing world's priorities shows that its importance as an educational and social tool is not yet universal. Everyone agrees that sport contributes to economic development by creating jobs and stimulating business activity. The organization of a major sporting event, for example, is a great opportunity for the local economy. The thousands of people who attend will spend money on food, lodging, transportation and other, related tourist activities. However, in recent years, we see these economic benefits are obvious only the short term. If we take the example of South Africa in 2010, the positive impact of the World Cup was, in terms of job creation and reduced crime...

... It was mid 2006, and Ruiz had just talked with Michael Dell, the founder and chairman of Dell Inc (Dell). He had called Ruiz with the news that Dell would purchase Opteron, AMD’s server microprocessor, for its highest-end server line. Dell had long been an Intel-only shop. Landing Dell as a customer was the culmination of a four-year effort that AMD had codenamed Project MAID. Sunnyvale, California-based AMD designed and manufactured microprocessors for the computing, communications, and consumer electronics markets. With roughly 10,000 employees, the semiconductor company had 2005 revenues of $5.8 billion, a 17% increase over 2004. The 2003 launch of Opteron and the company’s AMD64 technology ushered in a new chapter in AMD’s history. Traditionally, AMD had been a distant follower to Intel, which had a dominant position in microprocessors for the server and personal computer (PC) markets. However, Intel’s dominance was eroding as Opteron gained acceptance and AMD focused on “customer-centric innovation” under Ruiz, who was appointed CEO in 2002. Driven by Opteron’s success, AMD’s unit share in servers for the second quarter of 2006 rose to 26%, up from 11% in Q2 of 2005.1 The top four computer-makers that sold the vast majority of servers—Hewlett-Packard (HP), Sun Microsystems (Sun), IBM, and Dell—now offered at least one Opteron-based server. Furthermore, AMD’s presence in the lucrative corporate segment was growing: 90% of the...

...MIS535 – Managerial Applications of Information Technology Course Project: Installing an IP Phone System Company Information and Abstract: Holt’s Cigar Company has been in business for over 100 years. The first store opened in 1898. There are now two retail locations in the Philadelphia area. Holt’s also provides a mail order service where cigars can be purchased online or by phone in most states. Holt’s Cigar Company is also part of Ashton Distributors. The same person owns them. Holt’s is the retail store and Ashton is a wholesale company. The total amount of employees for both companies is around 100 people. I work in the IT Department. We are in charge of maintaining the network, helping users, and maintaining the phone system. The phone system is over 10 years old and is an analog system. This system runs off of Windows Server 2000. Windows Server 2000 is very old software and Microsoft does not support it anymore. So this means there are no new updates or patches to software. This can leave our phone system open to outside attacks from hackers. Our biggest problems with the current system are functionality and features. The system randomly stops working about once a week and this usually occurs during business hours. The server needs to be re-booted when this happens. The IT Department cannot re-boot this system remotely. It must be manually re-booted at our Northeast Philadelphia location where it is housed. The phones will not work at all...
