This book takes a very technical subject and makes it possible for managers and students alike to understand all aspects of network design. The practical approach used in discussing topics throughout the book provides a clear and excellent framework for those seeking to learn more about the topic. The book is a needed and welcome contribution to the profession.” —Dr. Mary C. Holcomb, Associate Professor of Logistics, Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management, College of Business Administration, University of Tennessee “Supply chain management (SCM) is a rapidly growing area of study—and network design is one of the fastest growing areas within SCM. This book would make a great classroom textbook. It is easy to follow with clear examples and useful exercises. It is laid out in progressive layers, with one’s understanding of the subject matter building as you go. You can stop midway and be comfortable with the fundamentals, or you can go as deep as desired into Supply Chain Network Design. “I have been a long-time practitioner of network modeling, as a manager in business and as a consultant, and I have covered the topic in university lectures; I still learned a great deal about a subject I thought I...

Sports Architecture in Modern China: a Comparison Between 2008 Olympic Venues and 1990 Asian Games Venues

...to show the best part of China to the world. This paper focuses on what and how the Chinese have done in order to accomplish the mission of hosting a successful game. A number of Olympic architectures are reviewed in terms of their locations, the cultural meanings behind as well as their unique characteristics. At the meantime, in this paper I try to compare Olympic venues with their counterparts built for the Beijing 1990 Asian Games, due to their close relations, which I will further explain in the later session of this paper. I. Location of 2008 Olympics and 1990 Asian Games venues An international comprehensive sports game usually consists of a main stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies are held, and a village that multi-functions as accommodation, gymnasium, catering, etc. to athletes, trainers and officials, as well as other venues where various sessions of a game are hosted. To Beijing 2008 Olympiad, the location of the above buildings is extremely important, due to the unprecedented opportunity to welcome the greatest sports event in the world. The Chinese folks consider the Olympic Games too significant to randomly picking certain sites without blending in a bit of historical and cultural characteristics. 1. Locations of the Bird’s nest and Workers’ Stadium. The Bird’s nest is located at the north part of Beijing, where major sports venues started being...

Understanding Business- Quiz 3- Chapters 7-9

...Understanding Business, Tenth Edition, Nickels/McHugh/McHugh Chapter 7- Management and Leadership 1. What does management look like today? Management differs today than it did in the past. In the past, managers were considered “bosses” and their job mostly consisted of giving employees orders, monitoring performance and reprimanding unproductive behavior and misconduct. Many managers still manage employees in such fashion; however, some managers now tend to be more proactive and have changed managerial functions for the betterment of company operations and performance to accomplish organizational goals. Effective management for company success now entails guiding, training, supporting, motivating and coaching employees verses just demanding what work should be accomplished. Budding managers that are entering management positions today are much different than those who entered in the past. Management potentials now are more educated, qualified, skillful, adaptable, cultured and creative. 2. What are the primary functions of management? Management is the process used to accomplish organizational goals through planning, organizing, leading and controlling people and other organizational resources. (1) Planning- anticipating trends and determining the best strategies and tactics (2) Organizing- designing the structure of the organization and creating conditions and systems in which everyone and everything work together (3) Leading- creating a...
