In the beginning of this chapter Nick Carraway describes that halfway between West Egg and East Egg is a place called the Valley of the Ashes. He explains that the Valley of the Ashes is place where many poor people live and that it is very dirty, dark and desolate. He also describes that there is a billboard of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg’s big blue eyes. Carraway explains that the train through the valley sometimes has to make a long stop because the drawbridge lifts for the barges to move through. He explains that during one of those stops he met Tom Buchanans mistress. Tom had forced him off the train and brought him to George Wilsons repair shop to meet his mistress Myrtle, who is Wilson’s wife. Tom takes Nick and Myrtle to New York City. Once

Some may argue that the system used is fine, but that does not explain the low graduation rate.
