I chose chapter one because Richard Rodriguez is going through family problems and having trouble with academics at school. Rodriguez was learning to speak English and it was very difficult for him in class. He did not want to participate in class, so the nuns from the school visited his house and had a discussion with his parents. The family started speaking more English at home, so the children can learn faster to speak the American way in America.
