Before reading A Long Walk To Water, I disagreed that there really isn’t a point to learn about other cultures. I was kind of neutral about this and just decided that I was more on the disagree side because cultures didn’t really matter to me and it wasn’t that interesting. To me, culture was just another thing that I just ignored.
Now, after reading the book A Long Walk To Water, I strongly disagree with this statement because it was really cool learning about the Dinka and the Nuer culture. From the book, it explains that the Dinka and the Nuer both have scar patterns on their forehead. The Dinka have v shaped scars, while the Nuer have lines and dots scars. When Salva finds Auntie, he notices scar patterns on her forehead. In the novel it

...In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva encounters many different types of conflicts throughout his journey. For example, when Salva was going to join a group, one of the group members said, ”Another mouth to feed? It’s already hard enough to find food” (21). This shows that Salva will be facing a form of conflict which is person versus nature. Salva will be experiencing this because he is adding to the amount of people in the group which means that there will be less food for everyone. Another form of conflict that many people faced on Sudan is a person versus person conflict. This form of conflict is represented because there were many people fighting in the Sudan’s civil war. These conditions were normal to the characters of the novel “A Long Walk to Water”, Salva Dut and Nya. In this novel, Salva and Nya are survivors of two different conflicts of both war and nature. According to Webster’s Dictionary survivor defies as,“ a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died.” but the definition I get from this book is to be determined to persevere instead of quitting. ...Cat in the in rain My assignment will contain an analysis of the short story: “Cat in the rain” written by Ernst Hemmingway. In my analysis and discussion I will focus on literary modernism and the lost generation, what typical features of the period, of the generation and of Hemingway’s style we see in the text, besides the text in from the 1920’s. The story is written in third person omniscient narrator, who deals with several different characters appearing in the short story. In the story we follow a couple and particularly the woman, and her vision on the relationship between her and her husband. She deals with many different issues, which appears in the way she is described throughout the story, and by the way she interacts among the other characters. The couple is on vacation in Italy, where they are staying at a hotel. The story takes place a rainy day. The American woman is looking outside the window, when she suddenly sees a cat hidden under a table from getting wet by the rain. She decides to go outside, to save the cat. On her way, to rescue the cat from the rain, she comes across the padrone of the hotel. He sends a maid out to help the American girl. When they gets to the table, where the cat were suppose to be, it was strangely enough gone, in proportion to how strange it is for a cat to walk into the rain, when they hate water. When she returns to her room, she is al of the sudden sad and annoyed. Without knowing why, she just wanted the cat so bad. When she...

...(CR). The film begins with a magnificent panning view of the vast and mountainous landscape. As with many nationalistic films, landscape plays a very important role, as it indirectly depicts the village peasants as slaves to the land, and a sense of hopelessness that comes with working the land. The several slow scenes focused on the horizon and landscape also represent the notion of an ‘unchanging China’, and it’s backwardness with it’s social and political margins. The film has many scenes depicting the natural surroundings and connection with the peasants, as illustrated in the scenes where Cuiqiao is seen continually making the trip from her home to the Yellow River to get water everyday. Although this chore would be one that the whole village is active in, the camera only focuses on Cuiqiao. The walk is symbolic of the tie that Cuiqiao and the other villagers have to the land. This...

...Their Eyes Were Watching God tells a story about a young woman going through life and finding her voice, the movie made by Oprah Winfrey flips the story and its characters making the main character and everyone in the story different. Oprah does a wonderful job at completely destroying the morals of the time period, and the symbols shown in the book. The movie changes relationships making the main character stronger and more independent. The beautiful love story shown by Oprah became a ridiculous rendition of Zora Neale Hurston’s classic novel missing key elements from the book. Oprah Winfrey completely disregards the moral fiber of the time period. In the movie some scenes got extremely graphic with the kissing and love making. These scenes...

Nothing

...BELOVED Toni Morrison ← Analysis of Major Characters → Sethe Sethe, the protagonist of the novel, is a proud and noble woman. She insists on sewing a proper wedding dress for the first night she spends with Halle, and she finds schoolteacher’s lesson on her “animal characteristics” more debilitating than his nephews’ sexual and physical abuse. Although the community’s shunning of Sethe and Baby Suggs for thinking too highly of themselves is unfair, the fact that Sethe prefers to steal food from the restaurant where she works rather than wait on line with the rest of the black community shows that she does consider herself different from the rest of the blacks in her neighborhood. Yet, Sethe is not too proud to accept support from others in every instance. Despite her independence (and her distrust of men), she welcomes Paul D and the companionship he offers. Sethe’s most striking characteristic, however, is her devotion to her children. Unwilling to relinquish her children to the physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma she has endured as a slave, she tries to murder them in an act that is, in her mind, one of motherly love and protection. Her memories of this cruel act and of the brutality she herself suffered as a slave infuse her everyday life and lead her to contend that past trauma can never really be eradicated—it continues, somehow, to exist in the present. She thus spends her life attempting to avoid encounters with her past. Perhaps Sethe’s fear of the past is...

Away Study Guides

...Away Study guide Background to Michael Gow Michael Gow was born in Sydney in 1955, He went to ‘a pretty rough school and at the age of 14 participated in workshops at Australian Theatre for Young people as both an actor and a writer. Gow’s plays have been popular with both critics and audiences alike. Away was produced several times throughout Australia after its initial presentation in 1986. Away is typical of Gow’s work in that it is rich in literary allusion. The quotes from Shakespeare mingle with numerous references to more modern culture. His style juxtaposes contemporary realistic situations with non-naturalistic theatrical elements. The plays explore lower-middle-class family life in Australia since the Second World War. Humorous sequences are mingled with painful situations often involving illness and death. These themes are always dramatized in the social context. Conflict between generations is a reoccurring them, typically involving the clash between attitudes formed through the Depression and Second World War and the changing values engendered by post-war prosperity. This conflict is more harmoniously resolved in Away than anywhere else. Gow says that the Sydney suburbs and the beaches of northern New South Wales are important settings for his play because that’s where he spent his childhood, and idealized versions of these places are in the background of his imagination. In the plays these settings are transformed into places representing more universal ideas...

Geanean

...Geanean Mckenzie Professor Weiss Modes Of Analysis Character Of Analysis Essay 2/16/14 In Tim O’Brien “The Things They Carried” The first story in the collection introduces the cast of characters that reappear throughout the book. The cast is made up of the soldiers of the Alpha Company, led by First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. The platoon is deployed to fight in the Vietnam War. The narrator, O’Brien, is one of the soldiers, and he distinguishes one soldier from another in this first story by the items that they carry. Authors as far back as Homer described soldiers going into battle by naming the things that they carried: goatskins filled with water, spears, and locks of hair from their beloved ones. O’Brien updates this literary strategy. His characters carry the modern implements of war. But the feeling evoked is similar: static lists make the characters seem already dead, prematurely mourned. The lists are like wills. The first story is told in third person, with some insight into the mind of Jimmy Cross. This movement between perspectives is called free indirect discourse, and serves to distance the reader from the soldiers. The reader sees them as if they were in a movie, moving slowly across an unfamiliar landscape, carrying their various burdens. The ancient movement of men going to war is juxtaposed with the rough, modern language of the soldiers themselves. They use slang, swear at each other, and try to diffuse the feeling of danger and helplessness by describing death...

Feather Girls - Analysis and Interpretation

...Feather girls - analysis and interpretation The short story 'feather girls' by Claire Massey, from 2010 is a very imaginary and well written story, which leaves you behind with the sensation of unknowing. I believe the text has a very deep meaning to it, which I will try to find. In the short story we meet a man called Bill. We can see from the text, that Bill is old "A collection of regulars cluttered the bar, all grey haired men similar age to him". Bill has a wife, who he does not see very often, as she has "flown off" by herself, as their children were grown. In the village, where the story unfolds it is common to give your wife a feather coat from feather girls, but Bill has fallen in love with a feather girl. The feather girl's name is unknown, but Bill and her have been seeing each other for a long time "All these years of going to meet her and yet still, every time, he felt like a lad. They have been doing the same thing over and over again, meeting each other at a local pub called the Hare and Anchor, eating vinegar crisps with salt "packet of salt and vinegar crisps. Here at the pub we are introduced to the landlady of the pub, Mary. Mary is the most interesting character in my opinion, because her curiosity about the couple is intriguing. Mary is described as stingy "Mary was stingy with the coal, still too early in the year for a fire whatever the chill in the air said". Mary is living in the past, and never throws anything away "Collections of one kind...
