The Devil In The White City Analysis

...serial killer from The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, appeared to have a “clear and blue” gaze (The Devil in the White City 37). Looks from pretty girls “fell around him like wind-blown petals” because Holmes always “looked fresh and crisp” whenever he was in public (The Devil in the White City 35). Robin Williams was a popular, talented actor, but only those closest to him knew that he was struggling with some sort of illness. Many people in society were shocked when he all of a sudden killed himself. In her special editorial called “the Terrorist Inside My Husband’s Brain,” Susan Schneider Williams- Robin Williams wife- shares the story of her husbands fight with his mental illness. Williams was a trained actor, so his wife “will never know the true depth of his suffering” because he fought so hard to keep it hidden. Although Williams “was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease,” Williams didn’t seem convinced with this diagnosis because “he was most likely keeping the depth of his symptoms to himself” (Williams). Williams accomplished everything the doctor told him to do up until his death: he...

Developing Guidelines to Design Gestures for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

...Developing Guidelines to Design Gestures for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language From the Perspectives of Kinesics and Linguistics Yihan Zhou Seton Hall University Abstract According to kinesics and linguistic theories, this project investigates what parts are involved in making gestures and how gestures carry meanings. A wide range of body parts are involved in making a gesture. According to David Mcneill, the physical movements acquire meaning by iconics, metaphorics, deictics, and beats. The project also discovers an etymological way to connect gestures to Chinese vocabulary. Based on the findings, the project further develops some guidelines to design gestures for teaching Chinese. They are making easy movements, identifying teaching content, making gestures understandable to your students, and applying gestures into teaching. In the end, the project applies the guidelines in designing activities for teaching Chinese pronunciation, vocabulary, character, and culture. Keywords: guidelines, gestures, teaching Chinese, kinesics, linguistics 1. Introduction 2.1 Background Gestures are common body movements: teachers instruct with gestures, referees in soccer game use gestures, people greet each other with gestures. Then what are gestures? Generally speaking, gestures are body movements which accompany and even sometimes replace verbal language. Because of its intimacy with language, it has attracted the people’s attention since Greek and Roman era...

The Sox Act

...Accounting Profession: Public Interest Implications Sara Ann Reiter1, Paul F. Williams2 2 1 Binghamton University, Binghamton, USA North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA Email: sreiter@binghamton.edu Received October 31, 2012; revised December 1, 2012; accepted December 12, 2012 ABSTRACT The US accounting profession was caught up in, and some say responsible for, the whirlwind of accounting and business scandals that rocked the US markets in 2002. To restore investor confidence in financial information, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act created a new Public Company Accounting Oversight Board with the authority to set standards for auditors of publicly traded companies, thus ending a century of professional regulation of auditing. In this analysis we employ sociological theories of professionalism [1-4] to help understand the implications of the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation for the accounting profession and for the public interest. We explain why professional self-regulation is important for retaining valuable economic franchises. We also explain why the public interest orientation of the profession is important and how government take-over of auditing standards potentially erodes the public accounting profession’s commitment to the public interest. Self-control over professional work, a key characteristic of professional status, is pre-empted by the newly created government oversight body PCAOB. With government takeover of oversight of auditing practice, claims to professional status...

Love Jones: a Videotape Anaylsis Paper

...love jones A Videotape Analysis Paper New Line Cinema’s romantic comedy love jones by Theodore Witcher examines the battle of the sexes by asking (1) whether the third time is, indeed, a charm and (2) can your soulmate of the opposite sex be found, and if so, can the faith, and love between you move mountains? Struggling photographer Nina Mosley (Nia Long) and struggling writer Darius Lovehall (Larenz Tate) have a lot in common, but they aren’t exactly prime candidates for a serious affair. The consummate ladies man, Darius’ silky smooth presentation promises more sell than substance. And Nina’s recently jilted heart isn’t looking for anymore of love’s kind of trouble. love jones begins with Nina and her good girlfriend Josie Nichols (Lisa Nicole Carson) packing up what’s left of Nina’s disappointing relationship. Fearful that the scars left from this failed romance may be too deep for her to heal, Josie takes her to a night-time poetry-slam at the Sanctuary, where she encounters Darius for the first time. The Sanctuary is the local haven where poetry is the prime draw, and a favorite night spot for Darius and his friends Savon Garrison (Isaiah Washington), Eddie Coles (Leonard Roberts), Sheila Downes (Bernadette Clark, and Hollywood (Bill Bellamy). “The romance dies between couples,” we overhear Darius telling his friends from his intellectual set, “because they’ve (people) given up on the possibility of it.” In an awkward introduction at the bar, Nina catches...

Jamie Turner Case

...CASE ANALYSIS OF JAMIE TURNER SUB: ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR GROUP NO. : 7 Overview of the case Jamie Turner is a management graduate hailing from Scranton, Pennsylvania who is working with Modern Lighting Industries Inc. He worked at Wolf River and Lambowland.com earlier and had found opportunities wanting there. Although both the companies were paying him well, he quit for different reasons. He thought he was stagnating in product management in Wolf River, so he went in search of a better opportunity. Although he found one in Lambowland.com, he learnt that the company had some serious cash flow binds and he had to leave that as well, and found himself in a job search in less than 18 months. Then he learnt about MLI and Cardullo, and after a few meetings with him, realised that this was what he was searching for.  MLI, a struggling regional distributor of industrial lighting systems and equipment based in Chicago, has recently been acquired by a division of the much larger San Diego-based Specialty Support Services (Triple S). Cardullo, the president of MLI, is the chief proponent of the Triple S acquisition, and he has told Turner to revive MLI, implying that if Turner succeeds he will soon advance to company president. However some time into the company he realised that he had got more than he bargained for. He felt things were moving on too fast and he would not be able to handle them at this speed. He took on the sales management responsibility only after a few...

Merchant of Venice

...An Analysis of Shylock's Speech in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice By Hamada Shehdeh Abid Dawood Discourse Analysis English Department Faculty of Arts Hebron University 2010/2011 Abstract This paper aims at examining, analyzing and revealing Shylock's utterances in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, by relating his words to the power, ideology, value, and etc. in the play. What is found in this study is that Shylock, the Jew merchant, lacks power and ideology, but when he seeks to find these elements, he loses all of them. In addition, Shylock's language varies from both situations. When he is the weaker, he is the source where Christians used to evacuate their insults. Introduction William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and was the son of a glove maker. When he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, and had three children. At the age of 20, he left Stratford and went to London where he became an actor and playwright. William Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice around 1596. It is regarded by some scholars as the strongest and most successful of Shakespeare's early comedies (Encarta Encyclopedia, 2002). Shakespeare’s portrayal of Shylock has long been fodder for debate among scholars. By Shakespeare’s time, Jews had been officially banned from England for centuries. Because of this, they had come to represent to many citizens of the time a sinister unknown. Shylock’s inability to grant mercy to Antonio and his tendency to value...

Sociology

...in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Abstract This article discusses the complexity of literary analysis and the implications of using fiction as a source of sociological data. This project infuses literary analysis with sociological imagination. Using a random sample of children’s novels published between 1930 and 1980, this article describes both a methodological approach to the analysis of children’s books and the subsequent development of two analytical categories of novels. The first category captures books whose narratives describe and support unequal social arrangements; the second category captures those whose narratives work instead to identify inequality and disrupt it. Building on Griswold’s methodological approach to literary fiction, this project examines how children’s novels describe, challenge, or even subvert systems of inequality. Through a sociological reading of three sampled texts – Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, A Wrinkle in Time, and Hitty: Her First Hundred Years – readers learn how these analytical categories work and how the sociology of literature might be enriched by attention to structural forms of inequality within literary fiction. This essay investigates children’s books in order to reinvigorate the discussion and use of novels by sociologists. Keywords: childhood, fiction, gender, literary analysis, literary narrative, power relations, social inequalities, Sociology, Sociology of literature Acknowledgments: I...

Great Gatsby - American Dream

...be exposed as a nightmare in disguise. Set in the roaring twenties, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby demonstrates such a point, criticizing the American Dream as well as the dishonest values of characters attempting to achieve this dream. When Nick Carraway moves to Long Island's West Egg, home to the newly rich, he is not expecting to get dragged into an atmosphere of depravity and deceit. Next door lives the elusive Jay Gatsby, a self-proclaimed Oxford man who throws extravagant parties at his mansion with the sole intention of reuniting with Daisy Buchanan, his lost love and true desire. The American Dream was traditionally the belief that anyone, regardless of background, has the opportunity to be happy and successful through hard work, yet as America evolved, the dream did too. The once virtuous ideal modernized into a plot for materialistic power. By the end of the novel, Fitzgerald is trying to project the idea that the American Dream is not only an unattainable ideal, but in addition, corrupts those who seek to obtain it. Firstly, Gatsby's unrealistic dream of Daisy is used to portray the unattainability of the American Dream. In Gatsby’s mind, Daisy is perfect in every aspect and the object of his greatest desire. He becomes so engrossed with the image of Daisy from his memories, that even she herself cannot fulfill his expectations: "There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams-not through her own fault but because of...

Paper on "The Natural"

...The Natural Sports Management 11/2/11 Movie Analysis “The Natural” is one of the most inspiring sports movies that I have ever seen. Matter of a fact it is one of the most inspiring movies that I have ever seen altogether. It is about a baseball player named Roy Hobbs, whose main goal in the movie is to become the best baseball player to ever play the game. It starts out with Roy throwing with his dad at their farm when Roy was a young kid. Then it jumps to a scene where it shows Roy’s dad dying of a heart attack under the tree that is in their front yard. Then it has Roy standing in front of his window one night just looking at the tree when a streak of lightening came down and struck the tree splitting it into two pieces. Now Roy took part of the tree and made a bat out of it and called it Wonderboy. Then it jumps to where Roy is at the age of just getting out of high school and it shows him talking to his girlfriend at the time, whose name was Iris. He was telling her that he had talked to a team out of Chicago and that he had a tryout with the team. As the movie goes a long, it shows him getting on a train with his agent, or the guy that found him and got his tryout, but also on the train it has a guy named Whammer on the train that is supposed to be the best baseball player that was ever going to play the game of baseball. So they stop at a carnival to enjoy their time and during this time Roy’s man that found him and another guy that was with the Whammer on the train...

...Jocelyn Dill Professor Samuels English 102-05 23 October 2012 Close Reading Analysis: The Gilded Six-Bits In Zora Neale Hurston’s short story “The Gilded Six-Bits,” there are many aspects that can be analyzed. However, I found it interesting that the act of objectification is reoccurring in this story from beginning to end. Objectification means to make a person or thing into an object rather than a human being or what it is. The character, Otis D. Slemmons, plays a very pivotal part in this story. His perception of wealth also plays an important role since the whole turning point of the storyline happens because of it. Mister Slemmon’s wealth and possessions cause everyone to be drawn to him. He himself allows women to treat him as an object rather than a person. Joe is extremely mesmerized by Slemmons. As soon as he hears of his presence, Joe can’t say enough about him to Missie May. She even gets to the point of exhaustion with Joe going on and on. “‘A new man done come heah from Chicago and he done got a place and took and opened it up for an ice cream parlor’” (Hurston 285). “‘Yeah he’s up to date. He got de finest clothes ah ever seen on a colored man’s back’” (Hurston 285). Slemmons is a symbol of wealth and admiration. He is also the cause of all the drama that takes place in this story. Missie May gives us the impression that she is a loyal, faithful wife to Joe. However, after Slemmons comes to town, we learn that is not true. Slemmons is...

...dilemma in the Jake Baker case concerns our nation’s most fought for and prided amendment, the freedom of speech. The main issue we, a society, face in this case is the right to feel safe and when does that become violated? We should use our best judgment to distinguish when someone is exercising their first amendment right or if they are stepping over the boundaries into life-threatening remarks. The question we would like to pose is “When should we deem a statement life-threatening?” 2) Identify in a couple of sentences the specific information technology (I.T) components that create the special circumstances for the Case you have selected. Information technology has allowed us to share thoughts and ideas to anyone virtually anywhere as long as they have a computer or a PDA with internet connectivity. This plays a huge role in this case because Jake Baker has found someone whom has his same interest in unique sexual fantasies and is able to communicate with them through the internet. Jake uses three types of IT components which are e-mail, internet and USENET. He uses e-mail to send and receive messages to an internet user by the name of Arthur Gonda. He uses the internet as a medium for communication and to post his ideas, and he also uses USENET, which is a worldwide bulletin board system that can be accessed through the internet medium. 3) List four critical stakeholders in the selected Case and identify an important “right” for each of them....
