Ada and Ruby Life experiences can be unexpected, or we never know what chain of events life has in store for us. Throughout life we will cross paths with a variety of different people, but it is these people who can help change how we view the world. Therefore, it does not matter how educated a person can be, if he/she was never brought up to learn other aspects of life. It could make it very difficult for a person to know how handle challenges that he/she may be faced with. In order for us to survive in a world full of chaos, we need to learn how to help each other to get through life. In Charles Frazier Cold Mountain, Ada and Ruby are woman with different backgrounds, but they come together in a time of need. Ada Monroe is a well-educated woman, who was brought to Black Cove six years before the war had started. After her father had passed, Ada decided to remain in black cove in hope her lover Inman would return. Ada tried her best to become one with nature by listening to her surroundings, so at times Ruby would test her knowledge. It was really important back than to know what someone’s surroundings were, because that would determine between life and death. As time would go on ruby would talk more about her father Stobrod, and how he had gone off and died in the war. She said he was never around; therefore, she had to learn her way of the land by trial and error. Meanwhile, it made Ada think about how Monroe tried to keep her like a child in a way. Some parents just have a hard time letting their children grow up what a parent may think is best for his/her child may not always be the answer.
