Have you ever been put into a position where you need to drop everything to go away and maybe never come back? Lina discovers that she will most likely never get to see her home again once she deploy at the first camp. I am analyzing Lina as a character, connecting with Lina over the loss of her parents, and predicting what happens after.

Lina is the narrator and the main character of the novel. We experience the Soviet genocide of Lithuanians, as she serves as a witness to many experiences she shouldn’t have to. She had to deal with the loss of both her parents. She was fifteen years old when the novel begins and, over the next several years in Soviet custody. She was forced to grow up much faster and confront much more horrific truths about humankind than most people do in a lifetime: “Was it harder to die, or harder to be the one who survived?” (Sepetys, 259). …show more content…
I know the pain that comes out in the novel, and all you can do is wait for it to pass. All you want is to get them back when you can’t so look for revenge: “I planted a seed of hatred in my heart.” (Sepetys, 327). Then you realize that you must go on even if it is hard. This makes Lina dour to all the other characters.

Ruta sends intimation at the end of the novel that every thing works out great. Does it really? I think that Lina will have some struggles: “I felt as if I were riding a pendulum. Just as I would swing into the abyss of hopelessness, the pendulum would swing back with some small goodness.” (Sepetys, 325). She could possibly get depressed. But she could also be really happy marrying Andrius. She could start a family or go back to Lithuania.
