The Key to Being a Good Mother Motherhood is an unconditional love that every mother provides to their child. It is a common motif throughout The Bean Trees, written by Barbara Kingsolver. Lou Ann, one of the main characters, is a single mother because her husband, Angel had left her with no reasons so she has to raise her son Dwayne Ray by herself. Lou Ann had faced multiple challenges, but she came through with the help of her friends and families. Lou Ann is the best mom in the novel. Lou Ann is the best mom because she is determined, thoughtful, and cautious. Lou Ann is a determined person which is a sign of being a good mother. Lou Ann is particularly thoughtful when it comes to Dwayne Ray. “With her other hand she adjusted the baby on her hip taking extra care, as she had been instructed to support his wobbly head” (Kingsolver 81). In this quote, Kingsolver shows that Lou Ann is very thoughtful when holding Dwayne Ray. Even though, it is after being instructed, it still shows that she wants to give the best care to her son. Lou Ann is not only thoughtful when it comes to holding Dwayne Ray, but is also very pensive about Taylor and Turtle. Taylor and Lou Ann had practically switched personalities after Turtle was attacked. Lou Ann was being more upbeat and confident, now that she is working. She tries to show Taylor how much Turtle needed her after being set upon. “Why didn’t you go to her and pick her up? Why did you just leave her there, with the police and all, chasing the dumb bird around for heaven’s sake? Chasing that bird like it was public enemy number one...” (Kingsolver 227).
