Main Character:
Sylvia “Vee” Bell is the main character of the book, Slide. She is very quirky, but also very quiet. Vee has pink hair and sticks out like a sore thumb. She used to be a cheerleader, and also very popular. After the homecoming dance, however, she faded into the high school crowd and lost her popularity. Vee is also a narcoleptic. She often has trouble staying awake during soporific lectures in her classes. Her narcolepsy isn’t really narcolepsy, though. When she “falls asleep,” she’s actually “sliding.” She can see through other people’s eyes and by the end of the book, she can control them. She is a cheerleader. She is Sophie’s best friend, so when she dies, she was very hurt. Mattie doesn’t know how to deal with the pain of losing her friend, but Vee helps her through it. Vee takes care of Mattie since their mom died and their dad isn’t around much. Another supporting character is Zane Huxley. He moves into town right before Sophie was killed. She just hopes she isn't too late. When they arrive, she starts looking for Mattie. Instead of finding Mattie, she finds Zane. She sees him carrying something outside and questions him. She confronts him for being the one behind the murders. He doesn't answer, and then a querulous Evelyn comes out and starts lighting a match. She was going to kindle a fire. The thing he was carrying was a gasoline canister. Confused, Vee runs back into the house and starts yelling, “Fire! Get out of the house!” All of the convivial teens started fleeing out of the house like madmen. Then she looks for Mattie. When she finds her she is drunk on a couch. She tries to get her out of there but she was walking like a baby taking their first steps. On their way out, Vee spots Samantha, but she can't carry both of them at the same time. She goes back in to get her but the smoke got to her and she started choking. She passes out and a vision. She sees her mother, and she also sees her other sister. Her mother asks her if she wants to stay with them in Heaven and enjoy the copious amount of peace. Vee was confused and didn't know what to say. Then her mother disappeared into the obscure darkness; Vee is alone
